CRI&P LWT-12 2
Title:  CRI&P LWT-12 2
Description:  Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad LWT-12 2 at the Rocket House around 47th Street in Chicago, Illinois on March 28, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in August 1955 as EMD 1001 (c/n 21464) on EMD Order 9002, it was one of two demonstrators the EMD fielded, this one operated on the NYC for several months in 1956 between Cleveland, Ohio and Chicago, Illinois in revenue runs. Later it demonstrated on the Santa Fe and the UP as the City of Las Vegas during the summer of 1957, but the train proved to be underpowered (1,200 horsepower and a single power truck) and required a helper to get over the Cajon Pass.

Returned to EMD, it and demonstrator 1000 were sold to the Rock Island, ending their days in commuter service. A third LWT-12 engine was produced to power Rock Island Line's Talgo Jet Rocket train. Coaches were basically modified GM bus bodies and were known to be rough riders. By 1966, the Aerotrains were out of service, number 1 and coaches were scrapped, numbers 2 and 3 were donated to museums along with a couple of coaches each. This one ended up at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

CRI&P F2 38
Title:  CRI&P F2 38
Description:  CRI&P F2 38 near Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in July 1963, photographer unknown (likely Dick Rumbolz), Chuck Zeiler collection. Although the slide was not marked with the photographer's name, I recognize the hand writing as Dick Rumbolz. This locomotive was built in July 1946 (c/n 2648) on EMD Order E617A, an order for 12 F2's, numbered 38-49, but delivered in reverse order (#49 had the lowest construction number).

CRI&P 101 'Lake Michigan'
Title:  CRI&P 101 'Lake Michigan'
Description:  Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad Business Car #101, 'Lake Michigan' at Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Business car 101 was built by Pullman as coach 352 during 1950. Around 1953 it appears to have been converted to business car 101, 'Lake Michigan' by the Rock Island. It is seen here on the Colorado Springs section of the Rocky Mountain Rocket. On the left is D&RGW VO-660 72 (built 8/41, c/n 64186) with a 'mixed train'. I arrived (with my parents) on the Colorado Springs connection of CB&Q's Denver Zephyr (DZ), forwarded from Denver to Colorado Springs on the rear of Rio Grande's Train #1, The Royal Gorge. Upon arrival at Colorado Springs, the DZ cars were cut off the Royal Gorge, and the local D&RGW switcher picked them up. The 72 will take the DZ cars and the freight cars it collected during its morning switching and drag them over to the other side of town, where the DZ cars will be serviced, cleaned, and be held for Train #2, The Royal Gorge, for return to Denver, where they will be added to the DZ for return to Chicago.

Title:  CRI&P F7 115
Description:  CRI&P F7 115 near Atkinson, Illinois on July 8, 1958, Kodachrome by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. The slide is marked: DEAD HEAD. One would suppose that this locomotive has had a mechanical failure and is on its way to the nearest shop. Not the best image, but a good example of Rock Island's as-delivered F7 paint scheme.

CRI&P CC119
Title:  CRI&P CC119
Description:  CRI&P CC119, Chicago, Illinois, March 1980, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built by Pullman Standard in 1970, this was one of five smooth-side Control Cabs (#'s CC115-CC119) on the Rock Island, later, Metra 7881-7885. The cabs were deactivated on the Metra, turning them into coaches. The blue sign at the end door reads: SUB LINE 5:18. This train is seen leaving LaSalle Street Station, presumably around 5:18 PM.

CRI&P FA-1m 134
Title:  CRI&P FA-1m 134
Description:  CRI&P FA-1m 134 being held at the tower in Joliet, Illinois on July 11, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The Rock Island acquired 16 FA-1's (or DL-208A) and 8 FB-1's (or DL-209A), delivered as 4500 horsepower A-B-A locomotives numbered in the 145-160 number series (the FB-1's were numbered 145B-152B). Model FA-1 #134 (c/n 76253) was built October 1948. Originally numbered 156 and powered by an Alco model 244 diesel prime mover, it traded that power plant for an EMD 567 and was re-numbered. It also acquired Blomberg trucks in place of the Alco B trucks and was classed as FA-1m. It has both Alco and EMD builders plates, I have not yet found the EMD construction number used on this unit, although the EMD Order was 8514 and an EMD model 16-567C prime mover was installed sometime between March 1956 and December 1957.

CRI&P U25B 209
Title:  CRI&P U25B 209
Description:  CRI&P U25B 209 at Silvis, Illinois on June 5, 1984, Kodachrome by Jim Altman, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built between September - October 1963 (c/n 34721). One source offers the following explanation of the lights on the corners of the cab: I believe the "frog" lights (as they were known) were installed to enhance visibility around curves and in tight areas such as yards and industry, sort of a precursor to the Ditch Lights. They were only applied to a handful of units, a pair of U25B's and at least one U28B.

Description:  Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad U25B 225 and U33B 296 at La Salle, Illinois on June 24, 1973, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 225 is a U25B, built in September 1965 (c/n 35701), and is equipped with frog eye headlights on the corners of the cab roof, an early form of ditch lights. The trailing unit is 296, a U33B built around September 1968 (c/n 36828). The occasion is a fan trip powered by Southern Railway's 2-8-2 4501, which is waiting for this train to clear so it can be wyed for the return trip to Chicago.

Description:  CRI&P U28B 248 westbound at La Salle, Illinois, June, 1973, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1966 (c/n 35914). It was built utilizing the carbody design of the last run of U25B's (Phase IV carbody). The crowd on hand is for the following train, a steam excursion featuring Southern 2-8-2 4501. There appears to be an unusual load cut in behind the power.

CRI&P U28B 264
Title:  CRI&P U28B 264
Description:  CRI&P U28B 264, Blue Island, Illinois, October 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built during October 1966 (c/n 36158), owned by the UP and leased to the Rock Island. After the Rock shut down in 1980, the unit was returned to the UP, becoming UP 502 on April 15, 1980. It was scrapped in 1982. It is equipped with "frog eyes" on the corners of the cab roof, and early version of ditch lights, although they seem to be in disrepair. It also displays one of the many permutations of the corporate name. Near the end of its existance, Rock Island's maintenance programs were somewhat lacking, and carbody doors often got swapped from side to side and between units, in this case resulting in "Ro laland". There are a couple of Bankrupt Blue doors tossed in for good measure.

The photographer noted everything except his name. The slide is marked: 9455 6-7-65 2:15 PM Short Line Yd. Des Moines, IA RI #59 (319, 194, 327, UP 722B, 856, 812). The Rock Island swapped carbody doors freely during maintenance, this one acquiring the letter A from another unit, perhaps a candidate for one of the shortest corporate names applied to a locomotive.

CRI&P H-15-44 401
Title:  CRI&P H-15-44 401
Description:  CRI&P H-15-44 401 at the Rocket House, around 47th Street in Chicago, Illinois on October 31, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in December 1948 (c/n 15L13), and along with number 400, were the only two Fairbanks - Morse locomotives on Rock Island's roster. They were specially equipped for suburban service, having both a steam generator and provisions for head-end coach lighting power (note power cables dangling from a connection next to the headlight). In May 1958, both H-15-44's were re-engined with EMD 16-567C prime movers, creating 1500 horsepower units that were essentially GP7's in F-M carbodies. Although the 567C (used in the GP9, SD9, and F9 EMD models) was rated at 1750 hp, it was likely de-rated to accommodate the reuse of the original Westinghouse Model 370-F traction motors (I'm still researching the traction motors). The letter F painted on the frame indicates that this is the Front of the locomotive. One source states the two F-M's were traded to GE during September 1966.

CRI&P C415 415
Title:  CRI&P C415 415
Description:  CRI&P C415 415 at the Rocket House, 47th Street, Chicago, Illinois, June 1978, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 415 was built in September 1966 (c/n 3451-01), and owned by Railcar Leasing Corporation, which owned units 415-419. When the Rock Island ceased operations in 1980, these five C415's were returned to the lessor. Alco's objective with this design was to save railroads money by eliminating the need for a fireman. By placing the cab in the center, the idea was to provide the engineer with a view of all four corners. This is the rear view of the mid-cab design, three cab heights were available. Since the engineer's window is not visible in this view, one might speculate that this design was not too successful, only 26 C415's were built. This unit appears to have issues with the radiator and/or cooling system. The center cab design placed the Model 251E V-8 prime mover under the front hood, and the air compressor, electrical and cooling systems under the rear hood. This required a long drive shaft under the cab to drive the compressor and radiator fan. It also required long pipes from the prime mover to the radiator, and loose pipes can be seen in the open radiator section.

CRI&P C415 422
Title:  CRI&P C415 422
Description:  Rock Island Alco C415 422 at the Rocket House near 47th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1978, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. In an obvious state of disrepair, this locomotive was built in October 1966 (c/n 3451-08), one of ten on the Rock Island, one of five owned by the UP (#'s 420-424) and leased to the RI. Upon the demise of the RI, the UP's units were returned and stored in Omaha. This particular unit was sold to Brandon Corporation on June 23, 1981 and used for parts, finally scrapped sometime after February 1990.

The prime mover, main generator and equipment blowers were located in the longer of the two hoods. The prime mover was an 8-cylinder model 8-251E, which was very unreliable and very off balanced. A drive shaft from the prime mover ran underneath the cab floor to the shorter of the two hoods, where it ran the air compressor and fan clutch mechanism. The off-centered location of the prime mover caused the locomotive to be badly off balance, leading to excessive wheel slip and wheel wear. The cooling system was also problematic, as coolant had to be transported from the prime mover at one end of the unit through a series of pipes (prone to leakage) to the radiator at the other end of the unit.
