CRI&P GP7R 4508
Title:  CRI&P GP7R 4508
Description:  CRI&P GP7R 4508 at the Rocket House about 47th Street, Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in April 1975, photo by S. Downey, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in July 1952 as CRI&P 1260 (c/n 16469) on EMD Order 5136, it was rebuilt sometime in early 1975 to GP7R 4508.

By early 1975, the Rock Island could no longer pay its bills, and petitioned the backruptcy courts for reorganization and protection from creditors on March 17, 1975. Federal Judge Frank McGarr appointed as trustee William M. Gibbons, who promptly appointed John W. Ingram as president and CEO. One of Ingram's first actions was to announce a new paint scheme and image, and this may or may not be the first locomotive to wear that New Image paint. It later became C&NW 4162.

CRI&P NW2 4908
Title:  CRI&P NW2 4908
Description:  CRI&P NW2 4908, Blue Island, Illinois, October 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1949 as P&LE NW2 8748 (c/n 7426) on EMD Order E1056, it migrated to the Rock Island sometime in the early 1970's. This locomotive presents a bit of a challenge to diesel spotters. It is listed in the roster resources as an NW2, but shows a couple of characteristics of a SW7. At the time of its construction, the NW2 production had been transferred to the Cleveland, Ohio plant (EMD Plant #3, which produced the NW2's between February - December 1949). The most outstanding feature is the full height front radiator grill, very uncharacteristic of an NW2. This locomotive also has a single taper hood, which was introduced on the last production run of NW2's. Note also the single row of louvers on the hood doors, whereas late production NW2's had two rows of louvers and a letterboard space between ( early NW2's had no louvers, a subsequent production had louvers top to bottom, no letterboad gap). Finally, it has twin sealed-beam headlights. This unit does have the NW2 arched windows in the cab over the hood. There are two possible explanations: the Cleveland plant may have used SW7 components, or this may have been a wreck repair. For those of you that have ever wondered (I have) about that intake grill that is below the front of the cab window at the running board, that is the intake for the rear traction motor blower, the motor of which is located under the fireman's (left) side of the cab.

Title:  RI 9596
Description:  Rock Island Railroad 9596 at the Rocket House near 47th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1978, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was stenciled: BLT. 10-56. The following is from the book, Rock Island Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment, by Messrs. Hile, Hickcox and Miller: RI LF series 1 - 50 - In 1956 ACF delivered 50 experimental container flat cars known as Adapto cars to the Rock Island. The cars were 41' 4" coupled ( stenciled 38' - 0" ) and could carry two 17' containers. The Adapto cars rode on two single-axle fixed trucks with a unique automotive type suspension with torsion springs and Monroe stabilizers. Despite the considerable fanfare and publicity, no other railroad adopted the Adapto car concept and by the late 1960's the Rock Island phased them out except for company service. When the Rock Island took delivery of the 50 Adapto cars in 1956, ACF also provided a variety of modular containers to attach to the cars with a unique Christmas tree-shaped load restraint device provided by Clark. Dubbed "Convert-a-Frate" by the Rock Island, they were an early form of COFC or containers on flat car.

CRI&P NE 17879
Title:  CRI&P NE 17879
Description:  CRI&P NE 17879, Blue Island, Illinois, July 12, 1982, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built around 1930, this was one of the 17850-17899 number series, the first steel cabooses on the Rock Island. It is stencilled: ERIE TRANSFER ONLY and also has a circle R, which I do not know the meaning of. It's in pretty sad shape, but not as bad as the Blue Island roundhouse in the background. By the date of this photo, the Rock Island had been gone for a little over two years.

Title:  CRI&P NE 19111
Description:  CRI&P NE 19111, Blue Island, Illinois, July 12, 1982, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Obviously built from a boxcar, this transfer caboose was still on the property two years after the Rock Island shut down. Too bad the creditors could not have been paid in blue paint, the Rock Island seemed to have plenty of that.

CRI&P 19161
Title:  CRI&P 19161
Description:  Rock Island transfer caboose 19161 at Blue Island, Illinois on July 12, 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Note that it has had a close encounter on the lower right corner; the Z braces are bent and some steel plates cover the wood. This car was one of seven in the 19160-19166 number series, rebuilt from road cabooses in the 17600 series which had been rebuilt in 1943 from class B-2 boxcars.

RI 20725
Title:  RI 20725
Description:  Rock Island 20725 at Blue Island, Illinois on an unknown day in July 1982, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from the book, Rock Island Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment, by Messrs. Hile, Hickcox and Miller: In 1965 the Rock Island began hauling mail in truck trailers on passenger trains, especially the Des Moines Rocket. Accordingly, 29 flats from the 93300 - 93499 and 93150 - 93249 searies were given steam lines, signal hoses, and were equipped with RIMT trailer hitches. When the service withered due to the demise of the passenger trains, the cars retained their express service numbers. In fact, other cars joined the series, extending it to 20555. The 20600 - 20734 were also renumbered from the 93150 - 93249 with the conversion to ACF Model 5 trailer hitches. In the early 1970's the 20518 and 20530 - 20555 were also re-equipped with ACF Model 4 trailer hitches. The cars measured 88' 5" overall with an inside length of 85', extreme width was 10' 3" and extreme height was 7' 8".
