| Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9948B westbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 12, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1950 (c/n 11704) on EMD Order 2023A, became BN 9954 sometime after March 2, 1970, was sold to Amtrak August 1, 1972 becoming 347, was retired May 28, 1975 and sold for scrap to Naporano Iron and Metal Company, Newark, New Jersey. The E8's in this order were equipped with fabricated grills covering the carbody air intakes (just below the roof and above the porthole windows), and painted side panels. Many CB&Q E7's and E8's were retro-fitted with stainless steel panels during shopping. This particular E8 retained its painted panels to the end. |
