PNC SD18m 1801
Precision National SD18m 1801 on the BN at Clyde, Illinois, November 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in October 1959 as Southern SD24 2503 (c/n 25599) on EMD Order 5606, it was renumbered to Southern 6301. It was sold to PNC during 1978 and put into PNC's lease pool. During 1979, PNC began having its ex-Southern SD24's rebuilt and de-turbocharged. The first five were rebuilt by the Milwaukee Road at the Milwaukee, Wisconsin Shops. All the other PNC ex-Southern SD24's were rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen. The rebuilt SD18m's were renumbered into the 1800 series reflective of their new horsepower rating, and all were leased to the BN for about a year or so. Note the blanked over dynamic brake blisters and lack of turbocharger bulge. This unit went on to become C&NW 6623, WSOR 1801, AGPX 1801.
