CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-B 4002
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4-B 4002 at Omaha, Nebraska on an unknown day in October, 1956, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 4002 was completed by Baldwin in December 1930 as CB&Q class S-4 3009 (c/n 61556). During July 1938 it was shopped at West Burlington, Iowa and upgraded to class S-4-A with the application of a new valve gear frame, Boxpok main drivers, lightweight roller bearing rods and roller bearing trailing truck and tender truck journals, and renumbered to 4002 The tender capacity was increased from 24 to 27 tons by raising the sides of the coal bunker by six inches, enabling the locomotive to run straight through the 1,034 miles from Chicago to Denver without stopping for coal. During 1951 it was shopped again and converted to burn oil by dropping a 7,300 gallon fuel oil bunker into the coal compartment and reclassed as S-4-B. It ran until about 1958, when it was stored at Lincoln. It was finally sold for scrap in 1960, the cab and tender were removed (along with the tender of number 4003), it was drawbar-connected back to back with 4003 (which also had its cab removed), and the two locomotives were moved (without the tenders, which were retained for MOW use) in November 1960 to Northwestern Steel and Wire in Sterling, Illinois and scrapped.
