CA&E GE 2001         
Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railroad GE Erie-built steeple cab 2001 at Wheaton, Illinois, unknown date and photographer, scanned from a 2¾X4½ print, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in 1919 for stock by GE at their Erie, Pennsylvania plant (GE c/n 7688), ordered by the Aurora Elgin & Chicago (later CA&E) January 26, 1920, delivered March 23, 1920, it was equipped with Alco trucks , four GE 257 traction motors, C90 controllers, and weighed 88,000 pounds. It was followed by a similiar locomotive in 1922 numbered 2002 (GE c/n 8067, also from GE stock), and the two were equipped with MU connections in 1929 and paired together. This photo illustrates the second black paint scheme with yellow lettering, and around 1941 it received the new CA&E red and gray paint scheme. Number 2001 was retired June 18, 1959 and scrapped at Wheaton.
