Amtrak SW1 732 at Lumber Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in May 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Nearly every PRR passenger and mail train in an out of Chicago's Union Station had to negotiate these rails. This shows part of a complicated switching maneuver in which this train, having arrived in Chicago, is then dragged backward about a mile to clear the 22nd Street Interlocking, then shoved up the former leads to Dearborn Street Station to clear the reverse tracks to the former AT&SF coach yard. At that point, this SW1 will be on the wrong end of the train, as the Santa Fe's facilities were stub end, which is where this train will be shoved in and serviced. |
