EMDX SDP40F 169 at Riverdale, Illinois on February 27, 1983, Kodachrome by Gib Allbach, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 169 was built in June 1974 ( c/n 74611-30 ) as Amtrak 609, traded back to EMD as credit for F40PH locomotives. It was retained by EMD as a test bed for the then-new EMD 710 prime mover. It was sent to Colorado for high altitude testing of the 710. I don't know its final disposition, nor do I know if it was a locomotive at all. It may have been a transport vehicle for the prime mover, that is, I don't think it could move itself. Corrections and additional information welcome. |
