Chicago & North Western Railway SD9 1710 at Proviso, Illinois on February 14, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 1703 was built in May 1954 ( c/n 19505 ) and was equipped with both a steam generator and dynamic brakes. The short hood was chopped down around 1966, the steam generator was removed in August 1971 and the locomotive was renumbered to 6610. I have no idea about the receptacle below the headlights. It may have provided coach lighting with power from the auxiliary generator. |

Chicago & North Western Railway SD9 6605 at about Roosevelt Road and the lake front (Soldier Field in backround), Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was on exhibit at a railroad trade show held at the site of the former IC Central Station, which had been torn down, but the platforms were still in place. I'm not sure why the C&NW was exhibiting this locomotive. Both EMD and GE exhibited their latest products, fresh off the assembly lines and polished up. There were also several railroad supply companies showing off their latest wares. The dynamic brake blister is plated over, signs of a shop modification. |
