C&NW BU4 |
Description: |
Chicago and North Western Railway BU4 at Proviso Illinois on an unknown day in October 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number BU4 was built in October 1949 as C&NW TR2B 2000B (c/n 10023) on EMD Order E1305, was rebuilt December 15, 1961 to Yard Slug BU4, and mated with TR2A 2000A. It was retired May 1, 1980, sold to the KCS becoming KCS 4079. Note the interesting mix of trucks, one is likely in the shop. This appears to be the track the C&NW stored locomotives on temporarily. |

C&NW GP9R 4321 |
Description: |
Chicago & North Western Railway GP9R 4321 at West Chicago, Illinois on May 19, 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 4321 was built in June 1954 as C&NW 1713 (c/n 19510), rebuilt and renumbered in October 1972, and retired on October 27, 1989, wreck damage I believe. Note in addition to the commuter rear end, there is an extra locker just behind the cab. One also might ponder the life expectancy of a revolving safety light with that kind of support. |

This was the former Chicago Great Western Railway main line between Chicago and Saint Charles and beyond, torn up soon after this photo. I believe it is a rail trail now. |

C&NW GP9R 4562 |
Description: |
Chicago & North Western Railway GP9R 4562 a little west of Harrison, Nebraska on an unknown day in July 1985, Kodachrome by Jim Altman, Chuck Zeiler collection. Jim noted on the slide mount that this was the Northwest Nebraska Centennial Train. It appears to be made up of ex-Rock Island coaches (a combine at the far end) and a C&NW business car. Number 4562 is flying an American flag on the Engineer's side and a Welcome flag on the other side. There appears to be a locomotive at the other end. |
