MONON F3 203
Title:  MONON F3 203
Description:  Monon F3 203 at Pullman Junction on the south side of Chicago, Illinois on April 20, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Officially the CI&L (Chicago Indianapolis & Louisville), Monon F3 203 was delivered as CI&L 82A, completed in May 1947 (c/n 4455). It is a bit unusual in that it has three portholes and Farr Aire grills. One of the spotting features of a Phase I F3 is three portholes on the A units, but it certainly was not delivered with Farr Aire grills, so one assumes this was a railroad modification.

It is pictured in charge of the daily Train Number 6, 'The Thoroughbred', running between Chicago and Louisville, Kentucky. It is seen here at Pullman Junction, and if it is on schedule, it's a little after noon. It departed Louisville at 6:30 AM, and is due in at Dearborn Street Station at 1:05 PM. According to the June 1965 Official Guide, 'Monon Passenger Trains Are Completely Air-Conditioned", and feature Reclining Seat Coaches; sandwiches, coffee, and soft drinks served between Bloomington and Chicago'. The southbound train of the same name was Number 5, departing Chicago at 5:25 PM, arriving at Louisville at 2:10 AM, a 324 mile run. This paint scheme was called the 'Purdue' paint scheme, the same colors of the Purdue University football team.

MONON C628 408
Title:  MONON C628 408
Description:  Monon C628 408 at Pullman Junction on the south side of Chicago, Illinois on April 20, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 408 was built in April 1964 (c/n 84911). When Alco introduced the Century series on January 29, 1963, they offered three models: the C420, C424, and the C624. No C624's were built, since just a few months later, Alco unveiled the new 251C 16-cylinder diesel, rated at 2750 horsepower for traction, and with it, the C628, which was formally announced August 23, 1963. The 251C was equipped with a higher capacity Model 800 turbocharger and improved exhaust manifold piping. Unfortunately, the weight (about 400,000 pounds) and long rigid wheelbase of the nine C628's (#'s 400-408) built for Monon in early 1964 were hard on the track, and by August 1967 all of Monon's C628's were traded back to Alco for C420's. The traded C628's were refurbished and sold to Lehigh Valley (#'s 633-641, later Conrail #'s 6729-6737).

C&EI FP7 1601
Title:  C&EI FP7 1601
Description:  Chicago & Eastern Illinois FP7 1601 at 47th Street in Chicago, Illinois on October 31, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 1601 was built in August 1949 (c/n 7536) on EMD Order E1076, renumbered to C&EI 934, becoming L&N 671 sometime after February 2, 1968.

This is combined Train 93-5, The Georgian (#93) and The Humming Bird (#5), departing Dearborn Station daily at 3:45 PM, arriving at Evansville, Indiana at 9:55 PM, where it is handed over to the L&N and continues on to Nashville, Tennessee. At Nashville, it is broken into individual trains, with #93 continuing on to Atlanta, Georgia and #5 continuing on to New Orleans, Louisiana. The June 1965 edition of The Official Guide lists a Sleeping Car included for #93 (4 Section, 4 Roomette, 5 Double Bedroom), as well as a Sleeping Car for #5 (10 Roomette, 6 Double Bedroom), a Club Lounge, a Dining Car, and unreserved seat Coaches.

MON 1903
Title:  MON 1903
Description:  Monon 1903 at Knoxville, Tennessee on April 4, 1985, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I would have classified this car as an insulated box car, but I looked it up in the 1971 ORER and it is listed as a refrigerator car, AAR class R206, one of 13 cars that remained in the 1900-1925 number series. I dialed out as much blue as I could without losing the sky, dial the rest out yourself. This was the shady side of the car, the best I could do without crossing the tracks.

MON 10245
Title:  MON 10245
Description:  Monon 10245 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The AAR legislated that roofwalks were to be removed starting in 1968, to be completed by 1978 for car in interchange service. Generally the roofwalks were left in place if there was a need to access the roof, such a roof hatches, seen here. So I conclude that the roof hatches were no longer used, although there is a stencil stating: THIS CAR EQUIPPED WITH ROOF HATCHES and WHEN EMPTY RETURN TO MONON RR, BAINRIDGE, IND VIA REVERSE ROUTE .
