Amtrak E8 444 at 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in May 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 444 was built June 10, 1946 (c/n 3408) as ACL E7 532. It was rebuilt by EMD in July 1953 as an E8m, retaining the original road number. It became SCL 575, then AMTK 233, was rebuilt by Amtrak in May 1974 to E8A-R and renumbered 444, retired in July 1981. |

Description: |
Amtrak E8A-R 444 at about 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in Sepember 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 444 was completed by EMD on June 10, 1946 as ACL E7 532. In 1953 E7A 532 was wrecked and rebuilt in July 1953 into an E8A with the same road number on EMD Order 8027A. It became SCL 575 upon merger, was leased to Amtrak becoming AMTK 233. Upon expiration of the lease, it was rebuilt to E8A-R 444 in September 1973 and retired in July 1981. |
