BN E9Am 9900 and RTA F40PH 115
Title:  BN E9Am 9900 and RTA F40PH 115
Description:  Burlington Northern Railroad E9Am 9900 departing Union Station in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9900 was built as CB&Q E8 9942B in March 1950 (c/n 9684), became BN 9935 on March 2, 1970. It was sold to the West Suburban Mass Transit District (WSMTD) August 18, 1972, and leased back to the BN for operation and maintenance. During February, 1974, it was rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen returning to BN rails as 9900 and named (in 1978) "Don H. King". It was retired January 1993, final disposition unknnown to me. In the background is RTA F40PH 115, built in 1977 (c/n 766062-16), named "Village of Oak Lawn".

Description:  Amtrak 9622 at Cana Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was built by Pullman-Standard in 1958 as C&NW 701, I believe it was part of the Flambeau 400, sold to Amtrak in 1974 and numbered 9612. It appears to be freshly painted here and possibly refurbished, renumbered to 9622, sold for scrap in March 1992.

BN E9Am 9904
Title:  BN E9Am 9904
Description:  Burlington Northern Railroad E9Am 9904 at Union Station in Chicago, Illinois on October 13, 1987, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. It appears not all the BN E9's were created (rebuilt) equal. This one, for instance, has a single HEP generator, or at least, a single exhaust for the HEP. Apparently, some of the E's were HEP equipped before going to Morrison Knudsen for rebuilding. I'm trying to get to the bottom of this. This locomotive was built September 1953 for the CB&Q as E8 9977 (c/n 18319), became BN 9977, and was rebuilt around 1973, returning as 9904, named "Village of Lisle". It was retired in 1992, later becoming IC (now, CN) 101.

BN E9Am 9906
Title:  BN E9Am 9906
Description:  BN E9Am 9906 at Roosevelt Road in Chicago, Illinois on July 13, 1983, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This train has just left Union Station and is approaching Canal Street, so he is likely in the process of conducting his running brake test. I have had previous discussions with Karl Rethwisch, a former CB&Q/BN Locomotive Engineer, and he revealed the characteristics of the 24RL brake schedule as applied to the CB&Q E-units. I inquired if the rebuilt E's retained the 24RL brakes, and here is his relpy:

The M-K units came back to us with a replacement for the 24RL schedule called the PS68. After using the thing a few times I bestowed a name on it that would probably not fit well in most articles but did retain the letters PS. The intentions of the design was twofold; eliminate the need for two separate brake systems, and provide a means of recharging the air system much faster than was possible with a conventional brake system. Recharge is the term used when, after releasing the train brakes, the air that was used to apply them is replaced in order to bring the system back to a fully charged state. The air in the entire trainline is effected by an application and is reduced by an amount equal to the reduction made by the Engineer. This reduction in brakepipe pressure causes the control valves to allow reservoir air to flow to the cylinders and press the shoes against the wheels. After releasing the brakes the cylinder air is vented to the atmosphere and is, for purposes of brake 'health', lost. The air used in an application MUST be replaced in order to have air available for subsequent applications, hence, RECHARGE.

The PS68 operated in a somewhat conventional manner as it related to brakepipe reductions and lapping. For this discussion, LAP is just like opening a sink faucet, filling a glass to your desired level and closing the faucet. In a brake valve, no air flows through it when lapped. The PS68 now departs from conventional brake valve design in that it adds a HOLDING feature to the positions available to the Engineer. As noted, when a brake valve is LAPPED no air flows anywhere, meaning that no air can be put into the trainline to replace that just used. HOLDING: After making the necessary brakepipe reduction and while waiting for the speed to reduce to zero, the brake valve is placed in the holding position. Electromagnetic valves on each car act to 'HOLD' the air pressure in the brake cylinders while, at the same time, allow air from the engine to flow into the brakepipe, thereby recharging it. I won't deal with the vagaries of this brake valve right now as it would add considerable length to this discussion. I'll say it was NOT my favorite brake valve.

Description:  Burlington Northern Railroad E9Am 9907, westbound at Cicero, Illinois, July 17, 1987, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was delivered to the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad as E8 9973, built August 1953 (c/n 18315), becoming BN 9973 on March 2, 1970, rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen May 1978, becoming BN 9907 until retired July 1992. Title:  GM&O F3 880B
Description:  Gulf Mobile & Ohio Railroad F3 880B departing Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1978, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in December 1946 (c/n 3601) on EMD Order E695, it was retired in October 1978, the prime mover was removed, and it was put on display in a park in Farber, Missouri. However, the city felt it was a liability and safety hazard, and it was scrapped sometime around 1990. It is seen here heading a train known as "The Plug", a GM&O commuter train between Chicago and Joliet (anyone know the origin on the train name?). Also seen is BN E9Am 9910 which fared a bit better in the survival game, for a while, working for the Nashville and Eastern after retiring from the BN in 1992. It is seen here about to divert to the southwestern suburbs of Chicago.

BN E9Am 9910
Title:  BN E9Am 9910
Description:  Burlington Northern Railroad E9Am 9910 at Canal Street in Chicago, Illinois on August 10, 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built December 1955 ( c/n 20534 ) as CB&Q E9 9985B, it became BN 9980 after March 2, 1970. It was sold to the West Suburban Mass Transit District ( WSMTD ) during August 1972 and leased back the BN. Rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen, completed March 15, 1973, it returned as BN 9910, leased to the BN for operation and maintenance until retired in July 1992. At first it was named PUTZ ( painted ) and later EDWIN S. PUTZ ( on a stainless steel plate ), the first BN E9Am named. You may ask why PUTZ. The following is excerpted from the book, History of the West Suburban Mass Transit District, by T. G. ( Ted ) Schuster.

Ten locomotives were named for District Trustees, ten were named for commuters. The identity of ten commuters whose names would appear on ten locomotives became a game of chance ( by way of seat notices and entry forms placed in the commuter trains ). As a precaution, BN representatives decided to let the State of Illinois Governor ( the Secretary actually drew entries due to a scheduling conflict with the Governor ) select 14 names, just in case any of the first ten had names like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck on them, or some other fictional character, who was not a BN commuter. The first name drawn was Edwin Putz. Obviously, BN personnel thought this was a fictitious name. However, the entry slips called for both an address and phone number. When checked by phone, Mr. Putz was not only an actual person, but worked on Lake Street in a print shop. Having gone through the first step unscathed, it was decided to present Mr. Putz with some recognition in a ceremony at Union Station scheduled just before rush hour one afternoon about 4:30 PM. During the week before the ceremony, your author ( Mr. Schuster ) began to hear snickers whenever the word Putz was mentioned. Finally, a clipping appeared from the American Herald newspaper published in Europe for English-speaking visitors abroad. That paper, which had earlier reported the winner of the locomotive contest as a Mr. Putz, observed rather gleefully that in the Jewish vernacular, the word putz was a sort of putdown, and actually referred to a part of the male anatomy. After your author read the article, he asked Forester DuSell ( BN Manager of Commuter Operations ) to call Mr. Putz in and gently question him about the reality of his name. From that questioning, it was learned he was actually an immigrant from Europe who immigrated to this country following World War II. His actual surname in Europe was Von Putz and he was very proud of his name. So the ceremony proceeded, and great media coverage was the result.

Description:  Burlington Northern Railroad E9Am's 9923 and 9911 at the former CB&Q 14th Street Coach Yard in Chicago, Illinois on July 6, 1984, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9923 was built August 1954 (c/n 19632) as CB&Q E9 9993. It became BN 9993 on March 2, 1970 and was sold to the West Suburban Mass Transit District (WSMTD) on August 18, 1972 and leased back to the BN. During July 1973, it was rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen (MK), returning as 9923, and continued in suburban service until retired in July 1992 and it appears it is now the property of the CN. Number 9911 was built December 1955 (c/n 20536) as CB&Q E9 9986B. It became BN 9981 on March 2, 1970, was sold to the WSMTD on August 18, 1972, rebuilt by MK September 1973 as 9911, was retired July 1992. I have not found any info about its final disposition.

Title:  BN E9Am 9913
Description:  Burlington Northern Railroad E9Am 9913 seriously departing Union Station in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1978, Fujichrome by Chuck Zeiler. In about a quarter mile this hogger has to shut the locomotive down and negotiate a 20 mph, 90 degree turn in the rails to Union Avenue Interlocking, so I assume he's blowing out the cylinders here.

Title:  BN E9Am 9913
Description:  Burlington Northern Railroad E9Am 9913 departing westbound at Naperville, Illinois on an unknown day in June, 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Both track re-location and platform re-construction are progressing, much to the chagrin of the commuters. The temporary platform is about a city block further east than it used to be, providing these folks with a bit of excercise to get to the parking lot.

BN E9Am 9914
Title:  BN E9Am 9914
Description:  Burlington Northern Railroad E9Am 9914 at about Canal Street in Chicago, Illinois on March 23, 1983, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler Built as Chicago Burlington and Quincy E9 9989B January 1956 (c/n 20542) on Order 2071, it had the distinction of being the last E9 (in fact the last E-unit) delivered to the CB&Q. It became Burlington Northern 9984 on March 2, 1970, sold to the West Suburban Mass Transit District (WSMTD) August 18, 1972. It was leased back to the BN for operation and maintenance until sent to Morrison Knudesen for rebuilting during September 1973. It returned as 9914 and worked in commuter service until retired in October 1992 .It appears to be the property of the CN at last report. It was built with electro-pneumatic brake equipment for Zephyr service (although this system wasn't used after the early 1960's), straight air relay valves for suburban operation, twin steam generators, and 55:22 gearing with overspeed control set for 94 mph. It was not the highest numbered E-unit, which was 9995, but the Q ordered ten additional E's after the 9995 was delivered. Seeing they would run out of four-digit numbers, they moved the last E's into the number block reserved for subsidiary Fort Worth & Denver as it was apparent that the FW&D would not be purchasing new passenger power. Note the construction number (20542), some web sites list this as 20545, which was a SW1200 delivered to the Q. I'm attempting to correct this error with this photo. I have three sources (so far) listing this locomotive as c/n 20542. As an aside, I list the number as a construction number instead of a serial number, because there are several serial numbers on a locomotive, and I hope this prevents confusion. Maybe not. Number 9989B worked in the Zephyr pool, rotating between Zephyr assignments and suburban service until March 2, 1970, becoming BN 9984. Its Zephyr assignments over, it worked in suburban service until August 18, 1972, when it was sold to the West Suburban Mass Transit District (MSMTD). During September 1973, it was rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen in Boise, Idaho, exchanging its twin 12-cylinder 567C prime movers for 12-cylinder 645's. It was stripped to the frame, sandblasted, the wiring was replaced, the steam generators were replaced with twin Cummins 350Kw generators for Head End Power. It returned to BN rails, numbered 9914, and was leased to the BN for operation and maintenance, and named "Village of Riverside". It continued to power suburban trains between Chicago and Aurora until retired in October 1992. One source has it as the property of the CN and stored at Woodcrest, so it may still exist. Some folks might not know about the rails passing overhead with the C&NW boxcars. This was known as the St. Charles Air Line, the east-west line of the Illinois Central, and by this date, the ICG. It passed over the south throat of Union Station, as well as the former Dearborn Street Station. It came back down to earth about a half mile to the left in this photo. The Air Line designation was an early turn of the century (1899-1900) term used to describe a railroad built straight as an arrow, with few curves, as if a line was drawn in the air.

However, these two gentlemen gave me a photo runby for my efforts. The are riding a Clark Warehouse Tug model CT-21.
