CB&Q E5 9909
Title:  CB&Q E5 9909
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9909 near Saint Louis, Missouri sometime in 1942, photograph by W. K. Barhan, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. This was the General Pershing Zephyr, Train Number 32, daily between Saint Louis and Lincoln via Kansas City, operated jointly by the Chicago & Alton and the CB&Q , thus the ALTON BURLINGTON herald below the headlight. This train operated from April 30, 1939 to 1949, suspended briefly during World War II to conserve fuel and wear on the equipment. The train was originally powered by AA 9908, however that locomotive proved under-powered for the task.

CB&Q E5 9912A
Title:  CB&Q E5 9912A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9910A, named SILVER SPEED, departing Union Station in Chicago, Illinois on August 21, 1949, photographer unknown, print by Willian A. Raia, Chuck Zeiler collectnon. Hand written on the back of the print is J. Scribbins, who may be the original photographer. The trailing E5B unit MAY be 9910B, named SILVER POWER, but I could not definitively make out the name. The following is from the Burlington Route!Historical Society's Burlington Bulletin No. 50, entitled, 'Overnight Every Night, Act 1: Burlington's 1936 Denver Zephyr", edited by Dave Lotz, who captioned this photo thusly:

Amplified with 174 additional chair car seats (provided by a pair of 52-seat cars and one-of-a-kind 70 seater SILVER LEAF, thb latter built for the General Pershing Zephyr), No. 1 (the Denver Zephyr) gets out of Chicago behind E5s SILVER SPEED and SILVER POWER on August 21, 1949. Passengers aboard the amplified portion of the Colorado-bound Zephyr will drink and dine aboard 36-seat diner SILVER SPOON riding first-out behind the E5B. Meanwhile, Gulf Mobile & Ohio Alco S2 No. 11 gathers head-end cars for spotting at the mail terminal (they'll go south tonight on the Advance Midnight Special to Saint Louis) as a GM&O E7 (visible immediately above SILVER SPOON's rooftop kitchen vents) awaits its next call to duty in GM&O's tiny Harrison St. yard. Photographer Jim Scribbins recorded the action from the Polk St. overpass.

The locomotives display the complete truck skirts, so that roughs in the date as early 1940's. Note the kerosene lamp mounted on a spring in the right foreground.

Title:  CB&Q E5 9911A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9911A, named Silver Pilot ( named removed in the early 1950's ), at Fort Worth, Texas on January 30, 1955, photograph by R. S. Plummer, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. This unit became FW&D 9982A on June 1, 1955, and C&S 9952A on October 1, 1955. It eventually made its way to the Illinois Railway Museum. My best guess is the train was the Texas Zephyr.

Title:  BN GP38M 2168
Description:  Burlington Northern Railroad GP38M 2168 at Springfield, Missouri on January 6, 1994, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. While not a very good photo of 2168, seen in the background is Illinois Railway Museum's ex-CB&Q E5 9911A on its way to Fort Worth, Texas, for the introduction ceremony of BN's new SD70's. On the way, it stopped at Springfield for wheel truing work in the former SLSF Shops, now gone. Note on the left the turntable placed on an incline at surface level.

Title:  CB&Q E5 9911A
Description:  Ex-Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9911A at Springfield, Missouri on January 6, 1994, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9911A was loaned by the Illinois Railway Museum to the BN for display at the debut ceremony of the new SD70MAC's in Fort Worth, Texas. On the way to Fort Worth, the F5 stopped at the former SLSF shops in Springfield for some wheel truing work. It is seen here as it was released from the shops. After being coupled to the passenger trainset (also from IRM) and with EMDX GP38-2 753 leading (for collision!protection), the E5 and train will head for Fort Worth. It was rumored that somewhere between Springfield and Fort Worth, The E5 powered the train, meeting or perhaps exceeding the speed limit.

CB&Q E5 9911A
Title:  CB&Q E5 9911A
Description:  Ex - Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9911A at Springfield, Missouri on January 6, 1994, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9911A was on loan from the Illinois Railway Museum and stopped at the former SLSF shops in Springfield for some wheel truing work. Here it is seen being pulled from the shops after a couple of days work. It will be reunited with the ex-Nebraska Zephyr trainset, and with leased EMDX GP38 753 leading (for collision protection) depart for Fort Worth, Texas and an appearance at the debut of the BNSF's SD70MAC locomotives.

Another interesting thing in this photo is the turntable in the background. I don't know the history, but apparently either the Frisco or the BNSF decided that a surface (rather than a pit) was the better plan.

Description:  EMDX GP38-2 753 at Springfield, Missouri on January 6, 1994, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a ferry move to bring the Illinois Railway Museum's CB&Q 9911A and Nebraska Zephyr trainset from Union, Illinois to Fort Worth, Texas for participation in BN's preview ceremony of its new SD70MAC locomotives. Number 753 was on the point for collision protection.

CB&Q E5 9912A
Title:  CB&Q E5 9912A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9912A at Kansas City, Missouri on an unknown date, photograph by R. S. Plummer, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Although the date is unknown it is likely somewhere between the late 1940's, when the truck skirts were removed, and the early 1950's when the names were dropped. In this case, the name 'Silver Meteor' is still visible on the name plate below the first carbody window. Number 9912A was built in March 1940 (c/n 969) and traded to GE in March 1965. This is a Phase 1 E5, the evidence is the buffer plate (the Phase 2 E5 carried the anti-climber across), and a cab vent below the Engineer's side window (missing on the Phase 2).

CB&Q E5 9912A
Title:  CB&Q E5 9912A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9912A, named SILVER METEOR, at Kansas City, Missouri, date unknown, photograph by R. S. Plummer, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Although the date is unknown, I roughed it in as early 1950. The truck skirts were removed in the late 1940's, and the coupler covers (present in this photo) were removed by the early 1960's. Also, the imitation grill plates (striped lines on either side of the upper headlight) are still present. They were removed in the early 1950's and replaced with stainless steel doors because to access the MU plugs and electro-pneumatic brake connections, the plates had to be unscrewed and removed. Terminal crews took to leaving the plates off completely.

The Exposition Flyer was inaugurated on June 11, 1939 in conjunction with the D&RGW and WP providing service between Chicago and Oakland ( San Francisco ) California, a precursor of the California Zephyr service. The train name was derived the Golden Gate International Exposition, held in San Francisco in 1939 and 1940, and replaced the CB&Q's Aristocrat, the D&RGW's Panoramic, and the WP's Scenic Limited trains. The Exposition Flyer continued to operate on the CB&Q through World War II, often operating in multiple sections due to war time traffic.

Title:  CB&Q E5 9915A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9915A at West Burlington, Iowa on September 29, 1963, Kodak Tri-X negative by Chuck Zeiler. This was the occasion of the 23rd birthday of steam locomotive 5632, and the CB&Q sponsored a fantrip to the West Burlington, Iowa shops, where 5632 had been constructed. There were a variety of locomotives on the floor in various stages of repair, and according to the Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin #10, 9915A (once named Silver Carrier) was wrecked at Bigelow MO on 4/22/63, and traded in on a U25B around 3/65. I don't know if it was returned to service in between.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9915B westbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 21, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in June 1941 (c/n 1304) on EMD Order E-377, was named 'Silver Clipper', and was traded to GE as credit on an order of U25B's in March 1965. This would be considered a Phase II E5, the major differences being in the roof grills, side cab vent, steam generator vents, front pilot/anticlimber/coupler arrangement, and the rear bulkhead ribs.

Title:  CB&Q E5 9915B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E5 9915B eastbound at Aurora, Illinois on October 11, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. My best guess, this was a late running Train Number 48, The Blackhawk, due in at Aurora at 5:40AM, arriving from Saint Paul. It's definitely eastbound, and it's definitely in the morning. Because of the heavyweight car cut in behind the motors, I disallowed the Denver Zephyr, due in Aurora at about this time. The Denver Zephyr almost never had a heavyweight car in its consist while I photographed it between 1962 and 1966.
