CB&Q NW2 9207
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9207
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9207 and VO-1000 9379 at Clyde, Illinois on November 15, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This NW2 was built in March 1941 (c/n 1288) on EMD Order E376 for 15 NW2's (#'s 9205-9219), among the last switchers built by EMD for the duration of World War II, when on April 4, 1942 the War Production Board (WPB) restricted EMD to building road diesels (the model FT) and model 567 diesel engine blocks for ships and submarines. As a result, when the CB&Q went shopping for more diesel switchers, the WPB assigned Alco S2's (9 - #'s 9300-9308) and Baldwin VO-1000's (30 - #'s 9350-9379). The last CB&Q VO-1000, #9379, built in December 1944 (c/n 71978) is seen here, and was retired in March 1967.

CB&Q NW2 9209
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9209
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9209 at Naperville, Illinois on September 4, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. On this photo date, 9209 was the assigned power for the East End Way Freight, which switched the industries between Eola and Congress Park. Because it was road power and the train was an Extra, it displays class lights as required by the rules.

CB&Q NW2 9209
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9209
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9209 on the eastbound East End Way Freight (Extra 9209 East to the Dispatcher) at Naperville, Illinois, September 4, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a pre-war switcher, built in April 1941 (c/n 1290) on EMD Order E376. The Burlington received 17 pre-war NW2's (9203-9219) before EMD was restricted from building switchers by the War Production Board. They were delivered with short exhaust stacks, only a couple of inches above the hood. The Burlington added home made straight stacks, and in this case, added covers to keep the rain and snow out. On the running board ahead of the cab is an enclosure and connected to that enclosure is a box on top of the hood. This was ATS (Automatic Train Stop) equipment required to operate over the C&NW main between Agnew and Sterling. If this locomotive (or 9208) was not available to operate Trains 92 and 93, the CB&Q would pay a fine to the C&NW, and the C&NW would be required to hold its trains east of Sterling and west of Agnew until the Q train cleared the appropriate control point. This locomotive also has class lights installed, required of all CB&Q locomotives used in road service. Engineer Fred Huntley is about to board his charge and back out onto the main and head for Downers Grove, having finished switching Naperville. This locomotive became BN 506 and was retired in May 1983.

CB&Q NW2 9212
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9212
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9212 on the East End Way Freight on July 15, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in April 1941 (c/n 1293) on EMD Order E376, became BN 509, and was retired in May 1983. Note that it has a second air hose, indicating it was set up for signals from the communication air hose, generally used in passenger service/switching. It is coupled to an MP and PRR boxcar, common freight cars in this neighborhood at this time, indicating perhaps that the suppliers for Kroehler Mfg. Co., which 9212 was switching, were located in the MP & PRR service areas. The Naperville train station is in the background.

CB&Q NW2 9212
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9212
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9212 at Naperville, Illinois on July 15, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This is the East End Way Freight (on this date it is officially Extra 9212 East), which left Eola at about 7:00 AM Monday through Friday and switched the industries between Eola and Congress Park. It's about 9:00 AM and the way freight has finished switching Kroehler (a furniture manufacturer) and has set out the cars for Boecker, the grain tower in the background, and Moser Lumber. Seen here backing the way freight onto main Track #1, the locomotive will cut off the train, leaving it on the main, and pull forward down the Boecker lead and pick up the empties (or loads, Boecker received coal and shipped grain). He will back up, shove forward and couple onto the loads (or empties) he set out earlier for Boecker and spot them for Boecker to unload (or load). Then with the Boecker loads (or empties) and Moser's loads of lumber on the front of the locomotive, he will couple onto his train and pull forward to clear the crossovers on the three main tracks. When the dispatcher gives permission, the way freight will back across all three mains. Once on Track 3 (the closest track in this photo), he will switch Moser Lumber, again freight cars handled on the front of the loco. When all is complete, he will perform a "flying switch" maneuver to get the freight cars on the front of his loco onto his train which is parked on Track 3. The procedure is to back about a half mile from the Moser switch, accelerate toward the switch, about half way there cut the loco off at speed, continue to accelerate toward the switch, heading the loco into the siding and lining the switch so the loose freight cars will drift past the switch and smack into the standing way freight.

CB&Q NW2 9216
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9216
Description:  CB&Q NW2 9216 on the East End Way Freight, Naperville, Illinois, November 7, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This is a typical CB&Q pre-war NW2, built May 1941 (c/n 1297) on EMD Ordder E376. It was delivered with short stacks, and the Burlington (along with almost all other railroads) added home made qtraight stacks. It has class lights, a CB&Q requirement for road use, and shows the CB&Q adjustment of the aftercooler pipes. As delivered by EMD, the pipes were tyqically mounted on top of the main air reservoir tank, and only one pipe was visible. For some reason, the CB&Q rotated the pipe array 90 degrees, as seen here. This, locomotive became BN 513 and was retired by the BN in June 1982.

CB&Q NW2 9216
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9216
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9216 and crew at Naperville, Illinois on November 7, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This was the westbound East End Way Freight with a five man crew, but one gentleman decided he didn't want his picture taken. The only name I know for sure is Fred Huntley, the gentleman in the lower left striking up an Engineer's pose. I believe the Fireman was Norm Herrington, the gentleman with the black hat. This locomotive was built in May 1941 (c/n 1297) on EMD Order E376, an order for 15 pre-war NW2's (9205-9219). It became BN 513 and was retired in June 1982. A note from Bob Campbell, The conductor is to the right of the coupler, and his name is Harley Peshia, the Brakeman on the cab steps is Don "Spike" Burand.

CB&Q NW2 9218
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9218
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9218 at Eola, Illinois on February 13, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive is equipped with a Vapor standby heater, evidence being the enclosure just ahead of the cab. The idea was to allow the diesel prime mover to be shut down in cold weather and the standby heater would heat and circulate the cooling water though the block. It was seldom (if ever) used due to the difficulty starting the prime mover with cold batteries as well as the other cold appliances (generator, air compressor, etc.).

It is seen here on the eastbound East End Way Freight (Clearance Form A would address this train as Extra 9224 East). Having finished switching Naperville, the train is headed east against normal traffic on Track 1, which usually hosted westbound traffic. The way freight will likely leave the main at Downers Grove, freeing Track 1 for westbound Dinkys (commuter trains).

Title:  CB&Q NW2 9244
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9244 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 7, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in August 1946 (c/n 3640) on EMD Order E699 for 28 NW2's (#'s 9220-9247). It became BN 541 and was retired July 1982. We are looking east at the East End Way Freight&as engineer Fred Huntley watches for hand signals to proceed slowly west. The Maintenance of Way crew on the ground will open the doors on the Hart Selective Service hoppers and discharge ballast along this side of Track 1. The less used track to the right leads to Moser Lumber.

Of interest is the Vapor-Clarkson standby heater on the running board in front of the cab. The purpose of this was to allow the prime mover to be shut down in cold weather. The standby heater would heat and circulate the cooling water to prevent freezing. The heater was seldom used, due to the difficulty in restarting the prime mover due to cold batteries and other auxiliaries.

CB&Q NW2 9244
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9244
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9244 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 21, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. It is seen here with Fred Huntley at the throttle on the East End Way Freight backing onto the main line after switching the industries on the north side of Naperville. He will cross all three main line tracks and switch the south side. Then he will proceed east, most likely stopping at Downers Grove to switch the industries there. This train switched all the industries between Eola and Congress Park. Note the device on the running board ahead of the cab. This is a Vapor Standby Heater, the purpose of which was to permit the diesel to be shut down in cold weather. This device would heat and circulate the cooling water through the engine block. Usually it was enclosed in a sheet metal housing on the switchers and GP7's and 9's. It was also applied to the SD7's and 9's, but there was enough room in the rear of the long hood to install it there. In practice, it was seldom used because of the difficulty in restarted the diesel with cold batteries.

Title:  CB&Q NW2 9245
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9245 at Eola, Illinois on January 8, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in August 1946 (c/n 3641) on EMD Order E699. It became BN 542 and was retired by the BN in May 1983. It appears to have acquired a new all-weather cab window recently. There was a roundhouse behind the photographer, who's shadow is pointing toward the rear truck. I posted another photo of this locomotive dated October 11, 1964, and in that photo the Way of the Zephyrs slogan was painted on the hood, suggesting that this locomotive was shopped sometime between the two photo dates.

CB&Q NW2 9248
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9248
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9248 at Oregon, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. Pictured in the cab was the regular Engineer on the Mount Morris turn, Hank Fruit, a long time "owner" of the Oregon job. I recall I was told I could ride the turn to Mount Morris if I got there in time. The only way that could happen would have been for me to stay overnight in Oregon. Unfortunately, I was only 15 at the time, so that was out of the question. I also recall that the waycar used on the turn had been damaged ( rear truck had been shoved forward because of an encounter with end of track bumper ) which would have meant a cab ride. I regret not having done that trip.

CB&Q NW2 9248
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9248
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9248 and crew at Narperville, Illinois, July 8, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This is the East End Way Freight between switching duties. Left to right: Mr. Fred J. Huntley - Engineer; Mr. Riedy (referred to as the College Boy by the crew), - Rear Brakeman, later, Head Brakeman; Mr. John Sylogye - Conductor; Mr. Norm Herrington - Fireman; and unknown - Head Brakeman. I have two stories about the Conductor.

Shortly after this photo was shot, the gentlemen all went about the business of railroading. John however was curious about the spitting sound that the locomotive was making. There is a device on locomotives that separates the water from air when it is compressed, and expels the water automatically causing the spitting sound. John apparently was unfamiliar with that device and must have thought that the drain cock at the bottom of the air tank was not closed completely. He reached under the tank and turned the valve, which he opened by mistake instead, which expelled the water at the bottom of the tank at the full air pressure of around 100 pounds per square inch. The valve happened to be directly over the rail and the expelling water hit the rail and bounced back on John. After he corrected the error, the Engineer looked down from the cab at the soggy Conductor and said, 'Now now, mustn't play with the locomotive boys.'

I was in high school during the years I knew John and the crew of the East End Way Freight. So I only hung around the railroad when I wasn't in school, which is to say on holidays and during the summer. I got familiar enough that I was allowed to do certain chores, one of which was to go to the Kroehler cafeteria and get coffee for the crew. This served several purposes; it got me out of the crew's hair, it made me feel like I was part of the crew, and the crew got free coffee. As it happened, my step-father ran the cafeteria, so I took the crew's thermos bottles and filled them up for free. On occasion, there was no time for my coffee services, so John made coffee in the waycar. I had never had coffee, so when it was offered to me, I felt like I should have some, being an honorary part of the crew. Perhaps it was because it was my first cup, or perhaps it was because that old coffee pot could have used a cleaning, but it was dreadful. Nevertheless, I drank it and made the best smiley face I could as I sat on the bunk in the coal-heated waycar with the crew. But I was more enthusiastic about my coffee services after that.

CB&Q NW2 9400A
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9400A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9400A at Bevier, Missouri on August 14, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. It is seen here leased to the Bevier & Southern, arriving in 1962 to replace 4943, perhaps the last operating CB&Q steam locomotive in revenue service, excepting the two fan trip engines. This locomotive was built on Order E912 in October 1947 as the cab unit of EMD's TR2 demonstrator EMD 912A (c/n 5514). The CB&Q purchased a total of 14 TR2 sets, including the demonstrator, and in 1954, sent the B-units back to EMD for installation of cabs. The TR2/NW2's in the 9400 number series were the only NW2's on the CB&Q equipped with MU plugs. It eventually became BN 546 and was retired in May 1983.

CB&Q NW2 9402A
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9402A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9402A at Clyde, Illinois on March 14, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1949 (c/n 6564) on EMD Order E1009A for nine TR2A's, mated with nine TR2B's (EMD Order E1009B), this particular locomotive became BN 550 and was retired in May 1983. This was the cab of TR2 9402, a drawbar-connected cow-calf set. In 1954 the CB&Q sent the B-units back to EMD for installation of cabs, suffix letters were added to the units, producing 9402A out of the original cab unit and 9402B out of the returning B unit with a cab. The B's had the revised cab installed, with rectangular windows over the hood on the cab front instead of the arched windows on the original cab A units, as seen here.

CB&Q NW2 9406B
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9406B
Description:  CB&Q NW2 9406B at West Burlington, Iowa on September 26, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built as a TR2B (a cabless NW2) during February 1949 (c/n 6576) on EMD Order E1009B for nine TR2B's, it was delivered drawbar-connected with 9406A as a single 2000 horsepower locomotive, commonly known as a cow-calf set. During 1954, the TR2B's were returned to EMD for the addition of cabs, and were returned as NW2's. The returned units featured a single taper hood and new style cabs and headlights, the spotting feature of the cabs being the rectangular windows over the hood in place of the original NW2's arched windows. The 9400's (9400-9413 A and B) were the only MU equipped NW2's on the Q. This locomotive became BN 559 and was retired during October 1983.

CB&Q TR2B 9408B
Title:  CB&Q TR2B 9408B
Description:  CB&Q TR2B 9408B at Knoxville, Illinois on April 2, 1950, photo purchased ages ago from J. R. Gruber, scanned by Chuck Zeiler. This photo shows the original configuration of 9408, a single locomotive built in 1949 as a TR2 cow and calf. This would appear to be the only instance of a single CB&Q locomotive showing both slogans on the same side. The lead unit displays class lights as required by CB&Q rules for road locomotives. The TR2's were broken up in 1954, and the cabless units (CB&Q 9400B-9413B) were returned to EMD for installation of cabs. By that date, the style of the cab had changed to a SW7 style, with rectangular windows over the hood area, as opposed to the arched windows that were on the TR2A's. All the former CB&Q TR2's were re-classed as NW2's.
