C&NW F-M H10-44 1064
Title:  C&NW F-M H10-44 1064
Description:  Chicago & North Western Fairbanks-Morse H10-44 1064 at Proviso, Illinois on January 9, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built January 1950 ( c/n 10L285 ) on F-M Order LD-76, it was retired August 19, 1976 and scrapped by C&NW at Oelwein, Iowa. It was powered by a 6 cylinder Opposed Piston diesel engine, had 68:14 gear ratio, was rated at 1,000 horsepower, 240,000 pounds operating weight. It exhibits a Phase I carbody, the generally accepted spotting feature is the overhanging roof at the rear of the cab. However, this is not necessarily an indication of an H10-44 versus an H12-44, as the upgrade from 1000 hp to 1200 hp was a simple change of engine rpm from 800 to 850, while retaining the Phase I carbody.

C&NW H10-44 1082
Title:  C&NW H10-44 1082
Description:  Chicago & North Western Fairbanks-Morse H-10-44 1082 at Proviso, Illinois on February 14, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1948 (c/n 10L59) on F-M Order LD-25, it was retired January 1969 and traded to EMD. The following is from Ron Wischer at railroadforums.com, who once worked on these locomotives, and he offers this:

"As for the old F-M 1000 numbered series, not much to say. All the yards here in Milwaukee used 'em as switchers in the mid to late 60's. Stinky little bastards that also blew carbon sparks out the stacks, but they sure did their share of switching. I often got a chance to run one, the controls were really simple. The throttle was mounted in a sideways U shape. Pull down and back and you went forward, up and back and you went backwards. We used to switch 25 to 35 car drags at a time and those little rascals could kick 'em good."
