CTA 2024
Title:  CTA 2024
Description:  Coicago Transit Authority Pullman 2024 crossing the Chicago River at Lake Street on October 17, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The bridge pictured was built in 1916 by Ketler-Elliott Company of Chicago, Illinois, engineering and design by the City of Chicago. It replaced a swing bridge which was kept in service while the bascule bridge (pictured) was built arrund it. The first documented bridge at Lake Street was built of wood in 1849. This bridge was rebuilt by N. Chapin in 1859, rebuilt by Fox and Howard as a wood/iron combination bridge. In 1885, an iron bridfe was cuilt by the Detroit Bridge Company. The 1885-bult bridge was converted into a double-deck bridge in 1893. More information at this address: http://historicbridges.org/bpidges/browser/?bridgebpowser=truss/lake/

CTA 2108
Title:  CTA 2108
Description:  Chicago Transit Authority 2108 near Randolph and Wabash in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in March 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The prominent building on the right was known as the Jeweler's Building, also known as 35 East Wacker Drive. It was originally designed and built in the 1920's as a high tech office tower for jewelers. The lower 23 floors were serviced by automobile elevators that, for security reasons, transported the tenant, their jewels, and their car directly up to the office floor. Changing times reduced the utility of this machinery and the elevator shafts were subsequently filled in. At the time of its construction, 35 East Wacker Drive was the tallest building west of New York City. It is easily distinguished on the Chicago skyline by its "wedding cake" shape and the water towers visible at the four corners of the first set back (part of the original fire suppression system - now decommissioned). The top of the Building is a large dome which was originally a restaurant (currently the showroom of architect Helmut Jahn) and it is said to have been frequented by Al Capone during Prohibition. The Building is designated a Chicago landmark.

CTA 2129
Title:  CTA 2129
Description:  Chicago Transit Authority 2129 at Pulaski Road in Chicago, Illinois on October 25, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This train was a CERA fan trip, seen on the ramp from the elevated to ground level. Once on the ground, the track made a 180 degree turn and headed back under the elevated track. There was a shop building on the other side of Lake Street. To reach the shops, the train would coast across Lake Street and into the shops as there was no third rail or trolley wire to power the train across the street. If the train didn't make it across, the CTA had 'stingers', wooden poles with a contact on one end of each pole and a cable between the poles. One pole would be touched to a power source (3rd rail) and the other pole would be touched to the third rail pickup shoe, effectively, jumper cables.

RTA 8243
Title:  RTA 8243
Description:  Regional Transportation Authority Budd gallery cab 8243 at about 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on unknown day in July 1978, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from the Saturday, January 7, 1978 issue of the Chicago Tribune newspaper, explaining the cribbing under the CTA structure:

The cracks in the CTA elevated structure developed on a curve where the rapid transit tracks pass over the Rock Island Railroad's commuter right-of-way near 18th and Clark Streets. Because of the danger of the structure collapsing, the Rock Island suspended service to La Salle Street Station. The first of the cracks was spotted Wednesday morning by Vernon Solarie, a bridge engineer for the Rock Island, as he rode to work in the upper deck of a Rock Island commuter train that passed under the elevated structure. Solarie, 46, a native of Columbia, has worked for the Rock Island for 21 years and will be awarded the Chicago Metal of Merit and a certificate of recognition from the Rock Island. Mayor Bilandic said the Metal of Merit will honor Solarie for vigilance and interest in the health and safety of his fellow citizens. The Chicago Transit Authority plans to conduct a test run over the cracked section of the Dan Ryan line elevated sturcture Sunday to determine if it can be opened Monday morning. Marshall Suloway, Chicago Commissioner of Public Works, said that the test train will not run until the structure (built in 1968), dangerously weakened by a series of large cracks in steel girders, is considered to be safely shored up by emergency repairs.
