IHB SW7 8838
Title:  IHB SW7 8838
Description:  IHB SW7 8838 at the Chicago Junction yard, Chicago, Illinois, June 13, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 8838 was built in January 1950 (c/n 8129) on EMD Order E1136, later becoming PC and CR 8838, scrapped by the CR at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania during June 1992. Not a bad headquarters building in the background for a railroad that owned only 2.185 miles of track.

The Chicago Junction Railways (CJ) was the parent of the Union Stock and Transit Company of Chicago, which was organized in 1865 to consolidate all the trackage into the Union Stock Yards. On December 15, 1897, the USY&T leased its railroad property to the Chicago and Indiana State Line. In August 1897, USY&T parent Chicago Junction Railways and Union Stock Yards Company bought control of the Chicago, Hammond and Western Railroad, which was building an outer belt line around Chicago, with trackage rights over the Terminal Railroad from Argo to the stock yards. The Chicago and Indiana State Line and Chicago, Hammond and Western merged on April 26, 1898 to form the Chicago Junction Railway, now operating two belt lines. However, on October 31, 1907, the outer belt line was sold to the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad, and the Chicago Junction was back to its original trackage in and around the stock yards. On May 19, 1922, the New York Central Railroad bought control of the Chicago River and Indiana Railroad (CR&I) and simultaneously leased the Chicago Junction to the CR&I for 99 years at an annual rental of $2,000,000. On August 26, 1958, the CR&I acquired the property of the Chicago Junction and lessor USY&T, and in 1976 Conrail acquired the CR&I's lines, now (March 16, 2011) operated by the Norfolk Southern.

IHB SW7 8839
Title:  IHB SW7 8839
Description:  Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad SW7 8839 and New York Central Railroad SW1 611 at the Chicago Junction yard in Chicago, Illinois on May 9, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 8839 was built in January 1950 (c/n 8130) on EMD Order E1136, became PC 8839 and possibly CR 8867, scrapped by the CR at Hollidaysburg. Number 611 was built in October 1950 (c/n 11768) on EMD Order 6115, and later became NYC/PC/CR 8437.

This is an interesting location, by the date of this photo, it is the property of the Chicago River & Indiana Railroad, a subsidiary of the New York Central Railroad. From the beginning of the 20th Century, this had been the property of the Chicago Junction Railway (a company formed by merging the Chicago and Indiana State Line, and Chicago, Hammond and Western on April 26, 1898) to form the Chicago Junction Railway, with the Union Stock Yard & Transit Company of Chicago (USY&T) as the parent company, and although the CJ owned but 2.185 miles of track, it appears that it was the last two miles into the Chicago Union Stock Yards, so if your intention was to get livestock delivered to the stockyards, you had to deal with the CJ (NYC). On May 19, 1922, the New York Central Railroad bought control of the Chicago River and Indiana Railroad (CR&I) and simultaneously leased the Chicago Junction to the CR&I. On August 26, 1958, the CR&I acquired the property of the Chicago Junction and lessor USY&T, and in 1976 the Conrail acquired the CR&I's lines.

CRI A-3170 8410
Title:  CRI A-3170 8410
Description:  Chicago River & Indiana Railroad (CR&I) Lima-Hamilton (L-H) A-3170 #8410, built May 1951 (c/n 9496), Chicago, Illinois, June 13, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. As far as I can tell, L-H did not have model numbers for their diesel-electric locomotives, but used a specification number. Some references make use of a LS-1200 model, but I believe this is might be diesel spotters handiwork. The CR&I was a subsidiary of the New York Central, and 8410 is seen in the Chicago Junction (CJ) Yard, a railroad company leased by the NYC for 99 years starting in 1922, the same year the NYC purchased the CR&I. Both the CR&I and the CJ were switching railroads and effectively controlled access to the Chicago Stockyards. The CR&I had the distinction of being the world's only all Lima-Hamilton powered railroad when the NYC replaced the steam power with diesel. Starting in 1949, the NYC placed an order for six 1000 hp switchers (#'s 8400-8405) of similar design (A-3170, the specification number did not change when the horsepower was increased to 1200). Following the merger of Baldwin and L-H in November 1950, the NYC placed another order for ten 800 hp switchers (spec. # A-3171, CR&I road #'s 9800-9809), and in May 1951 ordered (L-H order # 1219-DE) six 1200 hp A-3170 switchers, CR&I #'s 8406-8411. The 1200 hp A-3170 weighed between 120-125 tons, was powered by a 8 cylinder inline turbocharged Hamilton T89SA diesel driving a Westinghouse 499A main generator, with four 362D traction motors. It was classed as DES-15b by the NYC. The #8839 to the right was an Indiana Harbor Belt (another NYC subsidiary) SW-7, built January 1950 (c/n 8130), became CR&I 8839 during January 1965, became PC 8839 February 1968, and became CR 8867 April 1976.
