MILW RS3 452
Title:  MILW RS3 452
Description:  Milwaukee Road RS3 452 at Bensenville, Illinois on January 9, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 452 was built in December 1953 as road number 2477 (c/n 80581), renumbered around 1959 to 452. Sometime before May 1963 this locomotive and several other RS2's and RS3's exchanged their original road trucks for Blunt trucks that were on S2 switchers. The switchers now riding on road trucks were traded to EMD as credit on GP30's, and the Alco road trucks were removed, refurbished, and placed under the GP30's. The RS3's with Blunt trucks were hard riding in road service, but did not last very long, and were traded to EMD in 1968 for new power.

MILW RS3 470
Title:  MILW RS3 470
Description:  MILW RS3 470, Bensenville, Illinois January 9, 1966, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in November 1955 as Milwaukee Road number 2495 (c/n 81710), classed 16-ARS (16 hundred horsepower, Alco Road Switcher), it was scrapped at the Milwaukee, Wisconsin shops in June 1975. This is a late model RS3, having rectangular filtered carbody openings in two of the doors. Previous models had unfiltered louvers, allowing the prime mover to ingest dirt and sand, generally not recommended. The careful observer will note that the trailing RS3 is riding on Blunt trucks. This is a result of S2 switchers being traded to EMD on an order for GP30's. The S2's were sent to EMD (Pielet Bros.) on the RS3's AAR Type B trucks, which were removed and installed on the GP30's and returned to the Milwaukee Road. The S2's Blunt trucks were installed under some RS3's.
