MP GP38-2 2010
Title:  MP GP38-2 2010
Description:  A friendly wave from MP GP38-2 2010 northbound crossing the White River at Cotter, Arkansas on July 17, 1986, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This train arrived in Cotter with the trailing UP (#903) locomotive leading. The MP GP38-2 was added to the train to help on the 1% grade north out of Cotter.

Also pictured is the bridge over the White River, approved for construction on May 25, 1903. The Army Corps of Engineers determined that the White River was a navigable stream, so a turn span 285 feet long was designed into the 1091 foot long bridge (not including the short five panel timber approaches at each end). A contract was let out to the Phoenix Bridge Company, and the materials for construction were floated up the river on steamboat-powered barges. By June 1, 1904 the bridge was in service after a minor setback on March 24, 1904 when a flash flood caused a 27 foot rise in the river washing away the false work under one of the 80 foot girder spans, dropping the span into the river. The turn span was not yet complete, lacking the turning machinery. By June 20, 1904 the turn span was completed, tested, and never turned again. The arrival of the railroad in Cotter all but killed off the river barge business. Typical power north of Cotter in MP's steam era was double-headed 2-8-0's.

UP GP38-2 2256
Title:  UP GP38-2 2256
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad GP38-2 2256 crossing the North Fork of the White River in Norfork, Arkansas on June 28, 1990, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I got the following information from the book, "The White River Railway", by Walter (Mike) Adams, Library of Congress Card # 91-91855, copyright 1991: In 1879, railroad magnate Jay Gould of the Union Pacific Railroad acquired stock control of the Missouri Pacific, becoming the MP's President. He quickly purchased stock in the Saint Louis Iron Mountain & Southern, and by 1881 purchased the StLIM&S outright. His objective now was to unite the two properties, so he had a survey drawn up for a connection paralleling the White River in Arkansas. Also on Gould's mind was the immense amount of freight carried on close to 100 barges per day on the White River, as well as zinc mines located along the proposed route. Upon Jay Gould's death in 1892, his eldest son, George J., took over, and the construction of the connecting railroad was organized as the White River Railway. By 1902, the material for this bridge had been floated up the White River by steamboat, although the exact site of the bridge had not yet been determined, and the railhead was still close to 35 miles to the south. The survey crews were looking at two possible routes through this area, one through Yellville (which had offered the railroad a $35,000 bonus, right-of-way through the county, a depot in Yellville, and the necessary land for sidings), and an alternate route through Mountain Home (which offered the railroad $40,000, free right-of-way, and a $10,000 depot to be built of Baxter County marble and the roof plated with Baxter County zinc). Yellville countered with $20,000 cash, 15 acres of land in Yellville, six acres of land for each depot built in the (Marion) county, and a $5,000 stone depot in Yellville. In the end, the railroad was routed along the White River, south of Mountain Home, and north of Yellville, crossing the White River at Cotter. Cotter (named for William Cotter, General Manager of the White River Railway) ultimately became a crew change point, a roundhouse was built, and a second story was added to the Cotter depot for a dispatcher's office. The company set up to promote and build Cotter was the Red Bud Realty Company, so perhaps there is more to this story. This particular bridge was originally surveyed to cross the North Fork (thus the town name of Norfork) of the White River at 397 feet above sea level, but orders came from Saint Louis to raise it to 408 feet. Construction of the bridge was completed in June, 1903. Even at that, this bridge would occasionally be under water during spring floods, until a dam was built about ten miles upstream in the 1940's. At the time of this photograph, the bridge was 88 years old. It has seen the trains of the StLIM&S, the MP, the UP, and now the M&NA. Today it is over 100 years old and still sees a few trains daily. The White River is not seen here but runs between the trees and the bluffs in the background.

Description:  MP GP38-2 2074 at Cotter, Arkansas on March 1, 1990, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Sometimes you got to paint your own road numbers. Unfortunately, this locomotive was wrecked in May 1994 at Chidester, Arkansas. I went on Google Earth today to figure out where Chidester, Arkansas was, and it appears that the rails have been taken up.

MP GP38-2 2074
Title:  MP GP38-2 2074
Description:  MP GP38-2 2074 at Cotter, Arkansas on March 1, 1990, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. You'll have to take my word for it that number 2074 is in this photo. It's parked next to the Cotter Depot located a little above the center of this photo. In the center is a small brick building known as the Oil House. In the days of steam it housed the combustible liquids such as kerosene to keep them out of the wood-framed roundhouse. The track to the right of the Oil House was the lead to the roundhouse, which was located in the clearing between the Oil House and the tree line in the center of this photo. To the left can be seen a tank car of propane. The track the tank car is on once continued another ten miles or so, after it crossed under the main line at the far left (the main line climbed out of town at about 1%) and ran upstream along side of the White River. It was used in the 1940's to bring aggregate ( mined locally, Batesville, I believe ) and construction materials up to Bull Shoals to construct the dam. The track to the center-right with freight cars parked on it was known locally as Ten Track ( not Track Ten, I don't know why, local lingo I guess ), suggesting that the Cotter Yard once contained more tracks than shown. The White River is barely visible in the lower right as well as in the upper right of the frame. The railroad pretty much followed the path of the river for the next 40 or so miles south of this point down to Batesville.

MP GP38-2 2076
Title:  MP GP38-2 2076
Description:  Missouri Pacific railroad GP38-2 2076 at Cotter, Arkansas on October 16, 1988, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler.

You may notice four exhaust stacks on the roof On the original EMD design there were connectors between sections of exhaust manifold, and these are subject to FRA inspection for leaks. A V16 engine has four sections to the manifold, with four "legs" on each section connecting to four cylinders. The connectors in question are between sections of manifold, so that there are only two exhaust stacks on the roof. By doing away with the connectors (and their inspection), each section of manifold then has its own exhaust stack. Thus the four stacks. You may ask why EMD did not design it that way from the start, and the answer is that the space occupied by the two center exhaust stacks was also occupied by the dynamic brake option, if the locomotive was so equipped.

Title:  MP GP38-2 2082
Description:  Missouri Pacific Railroad GP38-2 2082 crossing the White River at Cotter, Arkansas on December 13, 1988, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. For those not familiar with the lay of the land, the river below the train makes a 90 degree left turn and passes below the bluffs in the background. Before a dam was built upstream in the late 1940's, spring flooding would cause the river to rise to within a few feet of the bottom of the bridge. And yes the mobile home in the foreground would have been under water in the pre-dam era.

MP GP38-2 2205
Title:  MP GP38-2 2205
Description:  MP GP38-2 2205 at Cotter, Arkansas on November 24, 1990, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built July 1980 (c/n 796323-8), it was eventually repainted in UP yellow and renumbered #705. What appears to be a scratch on the film in the upper left corner of the frame is a star or planet. This is a time exposure, and the light streak is a record of how long the shutter was open, approximately 20 minutes, as I recall. As the Earth revolved, the star or planet remained in the same place, making it appear to be moving across the sky. A friendly railroad employee turned various lights on and off as I walked around the locomotives with two strobes in hand, firing them off as soon as they recharged.
