C&IM SD38-2 70
Title:  C&IM SD38-2 70
Description:  Chicago & Illinois Midland (CIM) SD38-2 70 at BN's Cicero Yard in Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1980, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 70 was built in May 1974 (c/n 74605-1), becoming UP 2800, later UPY 800. Six were built for the C&IM, in the number series 70-75. This photo shows the paper air filter option (the box that rises above the hood behind the intake grills, which are located behind the cab), the bolt-on battery covers, and the non-dynamic brake option. There are two radiator fans, a feature shared with the SD39. See comments below, thanks Robert.

BN SD40-2 7102
Title:  BN SD40-2 7102
Description:  Burlington Northern Railroad SD40-2 7102 and C&IM SD38-2 74 at Clyde, Illinois on September 8 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from BN Annual 1977-80, edited by Hol Wagner: Beginning in September 1978, Chicago & Illinois Midland units began operating on the BN out of Galesburg, Illinois in exchange for the BN units which were running through from Peoria to Havanna, IL over P&PU/C&IM trackage with Commonwealth Edison coal trains. The coal trains had been running this way since 1970, but the C&IM had been paying for the use of BN power. At first, C&IM SD9's and SD18's were the common 'payment power', but shortly the Midland's six SD38's became the standard units.

C&IM SD38-2 74
Title:  C&IM SD38-2 74
Description:  Chicago & Illinois Midland (CIM) SD38-2 74 at BN's Clyde, Illinois Engine House on September 8, 1982, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 74 was built in May 1974 (c/n 74605-5), later becoming UP 2804, later still UPY 804. Chicago & Illinois Midland power on the BN was commonplace in the late 1970's and early 1980's. They were in exchange for the BN's run through power on Commonwealth Edison coal trains over the C&IM/P&PU from Peoria to Havana, Illinois.

B&O GP9 6581
Title:  B&O GP9 6581
Description:  B&O GP9 6581 southbound on the IHB at McCook, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. For those of you not familiar with this neighborhood, about a mile behind 6581 (or, a mile ahead of 6653) is the birth place of most EMD locomotives until about 1980 or so, EMD's plant at La Grange. A heck of a lot of dead locomotives past by this location, either as new units being delivered, or trade-ins destined for Pielet Brothers Scrap Yard, located roughly across these tracks from EMD. I imagine that most locomotives breath a sigh of relief after they passed by Pielet Brothers. I marked the GP9 as B&O even though the letters C+O appear on the frame.

C&NW SD38-2 6658
Title:  C&NW SD38-2 6658
Description:  C&NW SD38-2 6658 at Archer and Western Avenues (aka Brighton Park) in Chicago, Illinois on December 21, 1987, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in January 1975 (c/n 75618-9) it became UP 2814 and later UPY 814.

The C&NW acquired ten SD38-2's in January 1975 (road #'s 6850-6859, generally assigned to hump service at Proviso Yard near Chicago) out a production run of 83 units by EMD from 1972 to 1979. They were powered by an EMD 16-645E 16 cylinder normally-aspired (Roots blower) prime mover producing 2000 horsepower. It is seen here at the last manually contolled crossing in the City of Chicago. The first two tracks closest to my position belonged to the PRR/PC/CR railroads and the second two (including the rails under 6658) belonged to the B&OCT. The single track crossing those four is the former Chicago & Alton, later GM&O, by the date of this photo, the ICG. More information later as I find it out. Please leave a Comment if you know more about this location.

Mmmm, soup, also a good shot of the Campbell's Soup watertower.
