MILW F9 93C
Title:  MILW F9 93C
Description:  Milwaukee Road F9 93C at Elgin, Illinois on March 7, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 93C was built in January 1954 (c/n 18754) as number 83C (second), renumbered to 126A (first), then 93C (second). Originally built as a freight locomotive, it was regeared in the late 1950's - early 1960's for passenger service and a Cummins diesel/generator set was installed for HEP for the Budd gallery cars in commuter service. Number 93C was sold to Chrome Crankshaft in October 1980 and scrapped..

Title:  MILW F9 94A
Description:  MILW F9 93C and 94A at Elgin, Illinois on March 7, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. These locomotives are facing east, so I don't think they are in push-pull service yet, although a Budd cab car can be seen in the background on the left..

MILW F9's 93C and 94A
Title:  MILW F9's 93C and 94A
Description:  Milwaukee Rad F9's 93C and 94A at Elgin, Illinois on May 1, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Both locomotives are F9's, built for freight service on EMD Order 3172, the 93C was built in January 1954 as 83C (c/n 18754), later renumbered 93C, and later still renumbered to 126A, and it appears to have been retired in February 1975. Number 94A was also built in January 1954 (c/n 18755) as 84C, later renumbered 94A, later still renumbered 127A, and appears to have been retired in January 1978. In the early 1960's both units were equipped with Cummins HEP generators for suburban service. Interesting observation; I believe it is illegal to paint couplers nowdays, because it hides the cracks that might indicate failure. But it appears that the Milwaukee cared about the appearance of its locomotives, if only for a brief period of time.

CB&Q GP20 918
Title:  CB&Q GP20 918
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP20 918 at Clyde, Illinois on April 20, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built March 1961 (c/n 26589), it became BN 2054 and was retired August 1999. Also of interest is the second unit, EMD 462. It was a former C&NW F7, built as CStPM&O 6501A (c/n 8580) built December 1949, retired January 7, 1959, traded to EMD. This unit was rebuilt in May 1960 (new c/n 26158) and used as a test bed for the 645 series prime mover and other 40-series components. It tested extensively on the CB&Q, eventually being repainted in metallic blue and white. It was finally cut up at Pielet Bros. in 1998 after being held for some time. Offers were made to buy it, but no deal was ever made.

EMD F9 462
Title:  EMD F9 462
Description:  Electro-Motive Division ( EMD ) F9 462 at the CB&Q facility at Clyde, Illinois on April 20, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 462 was built in December 1949 as C&NW F7 6501A (c/n 8580) on EMD Order E1188, was retired by the C&NW on January 7, 1959 and traded back to EMD. It was rebuilt during May 1960 into a F9A (new c/n, 26158, note there appears to be two builders plates) on EMD Order E1188-A33R and used as a test unit for newly developed components. It is seen here between two CB&Q GP20's testing something.

A note from Ken Lanovich: EMD 462 was scrapped at Midwest Metalics (Pielet Bros) in 1998. They held it for some time, offers were made to buy it, but no group ever came up with the cash. The last offer was to buy the cab for a restaurant in downtown Chicago but that fell through. I remember pieces of it went to Larry's T.E. when the property was being cleaned up. Anybody need an F unit pilot? The 462's pilot and a brand new one from EMD went to LTEX when Midwest shut down.

BN F9 768
Title:  BN F9 768
Description:  BN F9 768 at Clyde, Illinois on August 12, 1982, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built as Northern Pacific F9 7007A (c/n 20324) on EMD Order 3181 in February 1955, later renumbered NP 6700C, and on March 2, 1970 became BN 9800, later still it became BN 768. As a 9800 series locomotive, it was equipped with a steam generator and was available for passenger duties, which became a moot point with the advent of Amtrak. It is seen here in it's final configuration as a freight locomotive, and likely on it's last miles as records indicate it was retired in the month that I shot this photo. As an aside, I was a CB&Q fan, and none of the CB&Q F units made it into the BN merger, so I was quite surprised to see a F unit in the Chicago area. I shot a whole roll of film on this single locomotive.

D&RGW F9 5774
Title:  D&RGW F9 5774
Description:  D&RGW F9 5774 at Salida, Colorado on August 25, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 5774 was built in September 1955 (c/n 20528) on EMD Order 3184 and was wrecked at Grizzly, Colorado on March 29, 1968, during May 1969 was sent to Precision National in Mount Vernon, Illinois and scrapped. It is seen paired with PA1 6011 about to couple onto its train after running around the two cars it arrived with in Salida as Train #1, The Royal Gorge and will depart as Train #2, The Royal Gorge at 9:00 AM the next day. The Royal Gorge (RG) departed Denver at 9:00 AM MST with cars from CB&Q's Denver Zephyr (DZ) attached on the rear. Upon arrival at Colorado Springs (10:40 AM) the DZ cars were cut off and the RG continued on to Salida, arriving at 3:15 PM. Meanwhile, the returning RG had left Salida at 9:00 AM, will arrive in Colorado Springs at 1:10 PM where the DZ cars will be attached to the rear, and will continue on to Denver, arriving at 3:00 PM. The DZ cars will be removed and cut into the waiting DZ for return to Chicago overnight. According to the June 1965 Official Guide, the RG was listed as having a Chair Car between Denver and Salida. Also listed was a Standard Sleeper, a Slumbercoach, and a Vista-Dome Chair Car between Denver and Colorado Springs, the DZ cars.
