Erie Lackawanna SDP45 3638, date, location, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. This slide was purchased at a hobby shop for 25 cents. There were no notes on the slide mount. Any info would be appreciated. This much I know: Built in June 1969 (c/n 34979) on EMD Oder 7174, became CR 6999, and later NS 6999. Although built on a SDP45 frame and classed as such, it carried no steam generator. It was built on the longer frame to accommodate the larger fuel tank requested by EL. |

Of all of EMD's poor designs, including the BL2, I think this unfortunate notch in the short hood of 6595 for the hand brake is the winner. How difficult would it have been to put a piece of sheet metal in the front to complete the facade and protect the hand brake from the elements. This had to be one of those Friday afternoon designs where the draftsman was concerned about going home for the weekend and took shortcuts to complete the job. End of rant. |

Probably a SD45 in reality, this shows the SDP45 frame and hood that EMD used to deliver a 5000 gallon fuel tank to the Erie Lackawanna. Built in August 1970 as EL 3658 (c/n 36662) on EMD Order 7246, the extra space behind the flaired radiators never contained a steam generator. Note the lack of vents behind the radiator intakes. The units were all returned to their lessor when their lease expired in January 1984, thereby ending the SDP45's service on Conrail. |

Built for the Erie Lackawanna as number 3664 in August 1970 (c/n 36882) on EMD Order 7246, it was classed as a SDP45, but was never equipped with a steam generator at the rear. The EL wanted a larger (5000 gallon) fuel tank, so EMD supplied a SDP45 frame and hood, although the rear end was beveled rather than flat. The spotting feature is the lack of vents for the steam generator section behind the flaired radiators. |
