Description:
Amtrak SW8 750 at about 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on December 21, 1987, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. All the resources I found so far indicate that this locomotive was built at EMD's, Cleveland, Ohio plant as LV 275 in December 1952, traded by Conrail (as # 8689) to Amtrak in May 1983. However I have not (yet) found an explanation for the NW2 style radiator front end or the unusual (for an SW8) roof-mounted cooling fan. Also, it appears that the hood lost the taper at the cab end. Photographic evidence shows CR 8689 in standard SW8 body configuration when traded to Amtrak, suggesting that the modifications were done by Amtrak.

Description:
C&NW SW8 801 at the 40th Street Shops in Chicago, Illinois on December 7, 1975, Kodachrome by J. H. Nixon, Chuck Zeiler collection. Note the red diagonal line painted through the ball and bar logo on the cab. According to utahrails.net, this locomotive was sold to Chrome Crankshaft Company, Chicago, Illinois on September 8, 1975 rebuilt to SW900M by the CRI&P at Silvis, Illinois, for Chrome; sold to Kaiser Steel as number 1029, Fontana, California, January 1977, now California Steel Industries, same location. It appears to have acquired a second exhaust stack during rebuilding, but the giveaway to the origin of Kaiser Steel 1029 is all the extra grab irons on the top of the hood.

CRI&P SW8 832
Description:
Rock Island Railroad SW8 832 at Lumber Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1978, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Rock Island 832 was built in November 1952 ( c/n 16630 ) on EMD Order 4185, and later became Coors C989. It is seen here at the south end of the Chicago Union Station tracks over the south branch of the Chicago River. Both the Rock Island switcher and C&NW bi-levels are somewhat out of place at this location. At the time of this photo, both the C&NW and Rock Island's suburban services were operated by the Regional Transportation Authority ( RTA, later, Metra ), so this may be an equipment transfer.

SP SW8 1125 at San Diego, California on February 11, 1984, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in July 1953 as SP SW8 4620 (c/n 18355) on EMD Order 4179, class ES408-3, it was renumbered to 1125 during SP's 1965 renumbering program. Note the dynamic brake option located in front of the cab. This was one of 20 SW8's so equipped on the SP (original road #'s, 4604-4623, re# 1109-1128). The original plan was to use these locomotives on the Northwestern Pacific, but they were quickly replaced by SD7's. They were re-assigned to the Pacific Electric and SD&AE, and this unit was at work on the latter when photographed.

SD&AE SW8 1126
Description:
San Diego & Arizona Eastern Railway SW8 1126 at San Diego, California on February 11, 1984, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Note that in addition to the usual air horns, this unit is equipped with an air whistle. Number 1126 was built for the Southern Pacific in July 1953 (c/n 18356) and was equipped with dynamic brakes. The intention was to use the SW8's on the Northwestern Pacific, however, the NWP assignments fell to SD7's. The d/b equipped SW8's were reassigned to the Pacific Electric, where the dynamic brakes were of little use. Number 1126 was sold October 31, 1979 to Kyle Railways, assigned to the SD&AE, and in November 1984 was renumbered to 1101 and moved to Kansas.

Description:
Conrail SW8 8619 at 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. By the pole in the upper left is a dog. I often carried dog biscuits in my camera bag to appease any unruly dogs I might encounter while photographing trains. Unfortunately for this particular dog, I was on my way to the lab with film from a photo shoot, and was snapping off the last few frames on train subjects, and did not have my camera bag with me.
