CGW RS2 54
Title:  CGW RS2 54
Description:  Chicago Great Western Railway RS2 54 at Randolph, Minnesota on February 12, 1975, Kodachrome by J. H. Nixon, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in August 1949 (c/n 77186), it was one of eight RS2's (#'s 50-57) on the CGW roster. All went to the C&NW in the July 1968 merger, and retained their CGW numbers. This particular unit was the last locomotive on the C&NW in CGW paint, and the last operating RS2 on the C&NW. It was in service at Randolph, MN September 1976, at Huron, SD during October 1979, and was retired February 17, 1981 and sold to Precision National Corp, Mount Vernon, Illinois.

GB&W RS2 303
Title:  GB&W RS2 303
Description:  ex-GB&W RS2 303 on the C&NW at Proviso, Illinois, October 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1950 as GBW 303 (c/n 77:16), the purchase price was $142,694.00. At some date the air-cooled turbocharger was changed to a water-cooled version, changing the exhaust stack orientation from length-wise to cross-wise, as seen here. One source indicates this locomotive was sold to the Ann Arbor in 1979, and later it was sold to Rail Rebuilders (which may explain the RRB reporting marks), later moved to Lake Superior Railroad Museum. However/ it appears that it now resides at Mineral Range, Inc., WSOR at Horicon, Wisconsin. Sometime during 1988 it was repainted to NYC 8203.

IC RS2 703
Title:  IC RS2 703
Description:  IC RS2 703, Madison, Illinois, October 2, 1965, photo by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. It appears to have been built in March 1948 for the Union Railroad as 602 (c/n 75695), at some date it migrated to Peabody Coal becoming 703, was acquired by the IC in 1959 and traded to EMD in 1967.

UP RS2 1295
Title:  UP RS2 1295
Description:  UP RS2 1295 at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in October 1963, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 1295 was built in January 1949 as UP RS2 1195 (c/n 76240) on Alco Shop Order S-3074, renumbered to 1295 in October 1955 to avoid conflict with new Alco S4's, retired in March 1968 and traded to EMD. The UP rostered five RS2's, road numbers 1191-1195, and after 1955, 1291-1295.

In my opinion, the Alco RS2 had the worst fuel filler location of any locomotive design, EVER. It's located on the cab sidewall, and you can see the fuel spill running through the word WEST. The fuel tank was located beneath the cab, also not a good plan IMO. On the other hand, I'm impressed that the UP added a nice all-weather cab window, and it appears that someone took the time to block off the hood top cab windows with brown paper.
