CRI&P RS1 739
Title:  CRI&P RS1 739
Description:  CRI&P RS1 739, Des Moines, Iowa, August 1965, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built in February 1944 (c/n 71316). In the late 1930's, at the request of the Rock Island, Alco stretched the 539T switcher frame by 8 ft. 6 in. to enable a short hood to be added behind the cab to provide space for a steam generator. Alco is generally credited with introducing the first true road switcher in 1941. Over the RS1's 19 years of production (1941-1960), 611 units were produced, 412 domestic, 144 for the US Army, and 55 exports. Alco managed to produce 13 RS1's before the War Production Board (WPB) placed restrictions on all domestic locomotive builders, and Alco was restricted to locomotives of 1000 horsepower or less. Since the RS1 fell into that category, Alco was allowed to continue production, but the 13 already produced locomotives were requisitioned by the WPB (including Rock Island's four units, #'s 746-749) , the trucks were changed to a C-C three axle three motor truck designed by Jerry Blunt to cope with the rough track on their intended assignment, the Trans Iranian Railway. The EMD FT was considered for this project, but the Navy had first priority on EMD diesel prime movers, so the FT was not available in the timeframe needed. A total of 57 C-C RS1's were built by Alco for the Army and sent to Iran, but because the Mediterranean was closed off by German submarines, the RS1's sailed around Cape of Good Hope into the Indian Ocean and then to the Persian Gulf. Alco also produced an additional 100 RS1's for the WPB for use in Russia, the first 70 were built to a wide 5 foot gauge. The first 12 ended up at the bottom of the ocean; the ship carrying them was torpedoed by the Germans. The rest were well received by the Russians, so much so that they were "reverse engineered", and the Russians produced hundreds of TE, TE1, and TE2 class locomotives.

GM&O RS1 1122
Title:  GM&O RS1 1122
Description:  Gulf Mobile & Ohio Railroad RS1 1122 at Glenn Yard on the southwest side of Chicago, Illinois on February 14, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in January 1949 (c/n 76625) it was retired in September 1976. Note that the road number is painted on the headlight glass L&N style. The GM&O must have been pleased with a 1000 hp road switcher, because the RS2 was in production at the time this unit was built, offering 1500 hp in a similar configuration. The RS1 production ran from the first unit for the Rock Island in 1941 to the final units for the NdeM built in 1959-1960.

Title:  GM&O RS1 1122
Description:  Gulf Mobile & Ohio Railroad RS1 1122 at Glenn Yard on the southwest side of Chicago, Illinois on February 14, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The RS1 was powered by a 6-cylinder inline turborcharger McIntosh & Seymour Model 539 diesel prime mover producing 1000 horsepower. The GM&O purchased 24 RS1's (road #'s 1102-1117 and 1120-1127) and through merger with the Alton Railroad acquired another 10 (road #'s 50-59). The RS1 holds the record for the longest running production of a single model, first produced in 1939 at the request of the Rock Island, and concluding with an order for the NdeM in 1960.

GM&O RS1 1126
Title:  GM&O RS1 1126
Description:  Gulf Mobile & Ohio Railroad RS1 1126 at Union Station in Chicago, Illinois on October 17, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in April 1949 (c/n 76796) it was retired in June 1974. It is seen here next to the PRR Polk Street Freight House (there were 18 tracks under this building) on the south throat of Union Station. According to the clock in the upper left of the frame, it's almost 1:25 PM, and GM&O Train No. 2, The Abraham Lincoln, is due in Union Station at 2:08 PM. More than likely, the 1126 will couple onto the rear of the arriving train and pull it back to the GM&O's passenger facility at Brighton Park. The following is excerpted from the book, Chicago Union Station, by Edward M. DeRouin (Pixels Publishing).

The GM&O's Brighton Park Yard was the smallest of the coach yards used by the railroads of CUS (Chicago Union Station). From the 1860's, until B&O control in the thirties, steam engines were also turned and serviced there. The freight yard was the C&A's (Chicago & Alton) principle Chicago yard until superceded by the larger Glenn Yard in 1914. During the years of B&O stewardship, Alton passenger trains and engines used B&O's Lincoln Street Coach Yard and Robey Street (later, Damen Avenue) Engine House. During this era, Alton trains backed out of CUS with road power through Fort Wayne Junction to Panhandle Junction. From there the train pulled north on the B&OCT to the yard. After 1942, Alton steam engines and passenger equipment returned to Brighton Park. Only a few tracks were needed to service Alton's trains. When the E7's arrived in 1945, they could often be found idling between runs at the Harrison Street Freight House. Locomotive maintenance was assigned to points at the other end of the run, the E units maintenance base was Saint Louis. In the diesel era, recently arrived and emptied GM&O trains would back to the 16th Street wye, shove up the hill, descend on the south wye and head for Brighton Park for cleaning and restocking. Equipment returning to the station would back directly from Brighton Park to the station track. While the PRR and CB&Q had some fast turns, the GM&O had its own turnaround champ. The Chicago-bound Abraham Lincoln, Train No. 2, was scheduled to arrive daily at 2:08 PM. The southbound Abe, with the same equipment, was scheduled to depart two hours and forty two minutes later at 4:50 PM. This train was a favorite for patrons of Springfield, Illinois and Saint Louis, Missouri. Often and particularly on Friday evenings, 800 passengers would be waiting as the Abe was hurriedly shoved northward toward the CUS platforms with the goal of a rapid boarding and an on-time departure.

Title:  SI RS1 1211
Description:  Spokane International RS1's 1211 and 1221 at Saint Joseph, Missouri on April 28, 1962, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 1211 was built in September 1949 as SI RS1 200 (c/n 77166) on Alco Shop Order S-3112, and after the UP gained control of the SI in 1958, it leased by the UP, repainted and renumbered into the UP system around 1962. It was retired in 1969 and traded to EMD. Note the extra headlight, for which I have no explanation. Aparently it last operated on Train 218.
