ICG SD40A 6007 was built in August 1969 as IC 6007 (c/n 34940) on EMD Order 5743, was rebuilt into a SD40-2R in June 1995. Number 3077 was built in February 1970 as IC GP40 3070 (c/n 36166) on EMD Order 5759, was shopped during 1974, emerging as ICG GP40A 3077. Number 3064 was built in August 1969 (c/n 34961) on EMD Order 7171, was wrecked April 30, 1987 at Tolano, Illinois, and scrapped by VMV in January 1995. |

Illinois Central Railroad SD40A 6007 at Paducah, Kentucky on June 25, 1986, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in August 1969 (c/n 34940) on EMD Order 5743, it became ICG 6007, and was rebuilt into a SD40-2R and became IC 6007 (again). The SD40A was unique to the IC/ICG, only 18 (#'s 6006-6023) were built at the request of the IC. The idea was to carry a 5000 gallon fuel tank and, to accommodate that, EMD used the longer SDP40/45 frame. The SD40A introduced the water level sight glass, a characteristic of the Dash 2 line of EMD products. |

Note that it has an L shaped Engineer's window, which it will lose during rebuilding. Looks like fresh paint on those front handrail stantions, perhaps there has been a recent repair. |
