CB&Q U25B 100
Title:  CB&Q U25B 100
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad U25B 100 at Clyde, Illinois on February 19, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The U25B was a bold move, since the CB&Q was a loyal EMD customer for a couple of decades. One assumes there is a story from the front offices to go with this photo, but the CB&Q acquired its first non-EMD road units in this order of these six U25B's (#'s 100-105) in 1964. It surely sent a message to EMD. This locomotive was built in September 1964 (c/n 35194), became BN 5424, and was retired in May 1981. Behind the U25B is a F3B and an SD24. On the other track is GP7 233.

Title:  CB&Q U25B 102
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad U25B 102 feeling out of place at Clyde, Illinois on May 7, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1964 (c/n 35196), became BN 5426, and was retired in May 1981. It appears it was last used as a trailing unit, otherwise the cab shades would have been extended. The GE units were relatively new to the people at Clyde on this date.

CB&Q U25B 103
Title:  CB&Q U25B 103
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad U25B 103 westbound on the CGI at Naperville, Illinois on February 27, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The CGI was an expedited freight train between Cicero, Illinois and Grand Island, Nebraska, and featured a pool of locomotives from the CB&Q and UP. It started in the late GP9 era (about 1960) and lasted (I believe) to the BN merger. Usually the newest locomotives were used, but I got a shot of a similar lashup headed by a Q F2. This locomotive was built in September 1964 (c/n 35197), became BN 5427, and was retired in July 1981.

Title:  CB&Q U25B 103
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad U25B 103 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 21, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in September 1964 (c/n 35197), it became BN 5427 and was retired in July 1981. It is seen here heading a westbound freight, trailing is a GP30, GP35, and two D&RGW GP30's. At the time of the photo, the CB&Q had run-through arrangements with a few railroads, the Rio Grande being one. The Burlington also had run-through arrangements with the UP and the NYC, and later, the PC. However, when the Q found one of its shiny new GE locomotives in MOW service on the PC, that arrangement was quickly terminated.

Title:  CB&Q U25B 104
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad U25B 104 westbound at Mendota, Illinois on March 20, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in October 1964 (c/n 35198) it became BN 5428 and was retired in May 1981. It is seen here at the head of train CGI (Chicago - Grand Island), an expedited freight featuring CB&Q and UP pooled power, in this case, UP supplying most of the power with four GP30's, the first one is a GP30B. The occasion of this rather well documented move was a fuel stop for a steam fantrip powered by 2-8-2 4960, a round trip from Chicago to Zearing for $7.50.

CRI&P U25B 209
Title:  CRI&P U25B 209
Description:  CRI&P U25B 209 at Silvis, Illinois on June 5, 1984, Kodachrome by Jim Altman, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built between September - October 1963 (c/n 34721). One source offers the following explanation of the lights on the corners of the cab: I believe the "frog" lights (as they were known) were installed to enhance visibility around curves and in tight areas such as yards and industry, sort of a precursor to the Ditch Lights. They were only applied to a handful of units, a pair of U25B's and at least one U28B.

Description:  Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad U25B 225 and U33B 296 at La Salle, Illinois on June 24, 1973, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 225 is a U25B, built in September 1965 (c/n 35701), and is equipped with frog eye headlights on the corners of the cab roof, an early form of ditch lights. The trailing unit is 296, a U33B built around September 1968 (c/n 36828). The occasion is a fan trip powered by Southern Railway's 2-8-2 4501, which is waiting for this train to clear so it can be wyed for the return trip to Chicago.

Title:  Wabash U25B 505
Description:  Wabash U25B 505 at North Kansas City, Missouri on January 30, 1965, photo by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in May 1962 (c/n 34259) it became N&W 3505. It would appear that this locomotive was not equipped with dynamic brakes, or you would not be able to see through the radiator, it would be blocked by resistors.

UP U25B 625
Title:  UP U25B 625
Description:  UP U25B 625 at Denver, Colorado on August 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 625 was built in August 1961 (c/n 34224), retired in September 1972, sold to Morrison Knudsen becoming MK 11, scrapped by M-K in October 1981. It is an early production U25B, one of 11 units delivered to the UP with high short hoods and vertical stairs (road #'s 625-632 and 634-636). The original GE U25B demonstrators were picked up by the Frisco, becoming SLSF 753-756. The steps and narrow walkway around the ends were unacceptable to the railroad, so GE redesigned the U25B and introduced their version of the low short hood. The second four demonstrators, GE 2501-2504 were sold to the UP, becoming UP 633-836. Only 633 (ex-GE 2501) was equipped with a low short hood. Later, in August 1962, the UP acquired four more U25B's with low short hoods (#'s 637-640), for a total of 16 U25B's on UP's roster, out of 478 total turned out by GE. In this photo the trailing unit is steam generator-equipped UP GP30B 738B.

Title:  UP U25B 626
Description:  UP U25B 626 and GP30 852 at Denver, Colorado on August 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The GP30 was introduced as the GP22, but when GE announced the U25B, GM's Marketing Department decided to one-up GE and changed the model designation to GP30. It was decided that the GP30 had 30 improvements over the GP20, the most significant was the central air intake, doing away with carbody louvers and slightly pressurizing the long hood to keep the dirt out.
