MONON C628 408
Title:  MONON C628 408
Description:  Monon C628 408 at Pullman Junction on the south side of Chicago, Illinois on April 20, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 408 was built in April 1964 (c/n 84911). When Alco introduced the Century series on January 29, 1963, they offered three models: the C420, C424, and the C624. No C624's were built, since just a few months later, Alco unveiled the new 251C 16-cylinder diesel, rated at 2750 horsepower for traction, and with it, the C628, which was formally announced August 23, 1963. The 251C was equipped with a higher capacity Model 800 turbocharger and improved exhaust manifold piping. Unfortunately, the weight (about 400,000 pounds) and long rigid wheelbase of the nine C628's (#'s 400-408) built for Monon in early 1964 were hard on the track, and by August 1967 all of Monon's C628's were traded back to Alco for C420's. The traded C628's were refurbished and sold to Lehigh Valley (#'s 633-641, later Conrail #'s 6729-6737).

D&H C628 608
Title:  D&H C628 608
Description:  D&H C628 608 at Binghamton, New York, June 15, 1977, photo by Jerry Lundeen, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built in May 1964 (c/n 3373-08), retired by the D&H in 1978, sold and leased to NdeM. The following is from the book, "A Centennial Remembrance" by Richard T. Steinbrenner:

The D&H ordered nine C628 units built in the Spring of 1964, followed by nine more a year later. The D&H C628's, No. 601-618, were the Railroad's first big power and were used system-wide for about 15 years. In their later years on the D&H, they were commonly seen on the run-through trains established with the Lehigh Valley, NE-87 and NE-84, which provided expedited service between the South and New England. The C628's of both railroads put on impressive shows on the steep grades encountered on this route. By the mid-1970's, the D&H, which had been committed to six-axle power, underwent a change of policy in favor of four-axle power. This, and the Railroad's deteriorated financial condition, resulted in the acquisition of second-hand four-axle power and the disposition of virtually all of its six-axle locomotives. In 1978 the C628's were sold to Diesel Supply International, and they were leased to the National Railways of Mexico, operating there until the late-1990's. Arguably the Delaware & Hudson was historically Alco's most faithful customer, and the C628's marked the Railroad's last purchase of locomotives from Alco. However, in no sense did this fact end the D&H's acquisition of products of Alco. Among the D&H's second-hand acquisitions were the former Lehigh Valley C420's, obtained at the formation of Conrail, and later, Conrail C424's and a C420.

C&NW C628 6721
Title:  C&NW C628 6721
Description:  C&NW C628 6721, Escanaba, Michigan, July 19, 1985, photo by Gib Allbach, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built as N&W 1120 April 1966 (c/n 3455-11), it was part of a second order for 20 C628's, numbered 1110-1129 (the first order of 10 units was numbered 1100-1109). At 204 tons, this order was the heaviest C628's built, and the N&W ordered the only high short hood versions. By 1973, the C628's were orphaned on the N&W by a large fleet of EMD's and GE's, and the C&NW bought all 30 from the N&W. They were assigned in the general service pool on the Twin Cities Division, and when the Fairbanks-Morse locomotives were retired in 1975, the Alco's were re-assigned to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They were retired in late 1986, replaced by SD50's, and this unit left the roster October 2, 1990.

C&NW C628 6705
Title:  C&NW C628 6705
Description:  Chicago & North Western Railway Alco C628 6705 at Green Bay, Wisconsin, September 5, 1976, Kodachrome by J. H. Nixon, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built as Norfolk and Western 1104 (c/n 3429-05) October 1965, leased to C&NW on February 1, 1973, purchased by the C&NW on June 29, 1973, retired December 8, 1980, used for parts. The N&W's C628's were delivered to run long hood forward (the F for Front is still stencilled on the long hood end of the frame), and were equipped with dual controls. This required a larger cab, and the overall length of the N&W versions was six inches longer than standard production C628's. These were the only high short hood examples of the C628.

The C&NW leased six of the 30 N&W units in 1973, later purchasing the entire N&W fleet of C628's. This locomotive was retired October 2, 1990.

MILW H-16-66 524
Title:  MILW H-16-66 524
Description:  MILW H-16-66 524, Escanaba, Michigan, November 9, 1975, photo by J. H. Nixon, Chuck Zeiler collection. There is conflicting information about this locomotive, the following is from the book, 'Faribanks-Morse Locomotives In Color', by Jim Boyd: The Milwaukee Road was one of only four customers to buy the H-16-66 Baby Trainmasters. They were delivered in two batches, numbers 2125-2127 (later 550-552) were built during August-September 1953, and 2128-2130 (later, 553-555, later still 547-549) were built during September 1953, and all were classed 16-FRS-6 by the Milwaukee. Somehow, the second batch had lower constrution (serial) numbers.

The book does not connect this road number to any previous number, but this web site ( http://www.trainweb.org/milwaukee/roster.txt ) claims that 524 was built as 2128, then renumbered to 553, then 547, then 524. The web site offers c/n 16L-757 as the serial for number 524. Take your pick. It appears that 524 was out of service on January 1976, and sold for scrap to Precision National in June 1976. Finally, consulting the book, "Milwaukee Road Locomotives, Volume Three", by Thomas J. Strauss, this locomotive was built as 2128 (c/n 16L693), renumbered to 553, then 547, then 524, equipped with MU connections at both ends, no dynamic brakes. Only 60 H16-66's were built, with the C&NW owning 50, the Milwaukee owning eight, Alcoa owning one, and TVA owning one.
