Description:  Rock Island NW1 701 at Blue Island, Illinois, on an unknown day in May 1943, photograph by Jack Delano, Library of Congress collection. Number 701 was built in March 1938 ( c/n 780 ), re-powered at an unknown date ( between 1957 - 1962 ) by the Rock Island with Alco Model 244 prime mover removed from an EMD re-powered Alco road switcher. The photo was captioned as follows: Switchman riding the footboard of a diesel switch engine on the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad.

Title:  CB&Q NW1 9200
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW1 9200 at Clyde, Illinois on March 28, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built by Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC) in November 1937 (c/n 775) it was traded in as credit for a SW1200 in September 1965. Of the 27 pure NW1's built by EMC, the CB&Q owned two. The NW1 was powered by a V-12 cylinder Winton 201A developing 900 horsepower, driving a General Electric main generator powering GE traction motors.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW1 9201 and GP30 964 at Clyde, Illinois, on June 27, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler Number 9201 was built by Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC) in December 1937 (c/n 776), and traded to EMD in July 1965 for a SW-1200. It is one of 27 NW1s built, and two were owned by the CB&Q. The NW1 was powered by a 900 hp Winton 201A V-12 diesel prime mover coupled to a GE main generator driving four GE traction motors. By 1930, EMC and the Winton Engine Company had become subsidiaries of General Motors. The spotting feature of the NW1 is the side vents at the top of the hood at the radiator end. The N in NW indicates Nine hundred horsepower, and the W indicates a Welded frame. This locomotive could be ordered with a Cast frame, producing a NC1, and could also come with Westinghouse electrical gear.
