CB&Q 4-6-0 Class K-4 719
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-0 Class K-4 719
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-0 Class K-4 719 at Alliance, Nebraska on December 21, 1981, Slide by Jim Altman, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 719 was built in 1903 as Burlington & Missouri River Railroad 40 at Havelock, Nebraska, renumbered to B&MR 3687. Although the B&MR was acquired by the CB&Q in 1872, it continued to operate as a subsidiary until fully absorbed sometime in 1904. At that time this locomotive was renumbered in the CB&Q locomotive roster, becoming CB&Q 719 and classed K-4. It was renumbered CB&Q 919 in 1951, and after retirement it was donated to the City of Alliance in 1962 then cosmetically restored and numbered back to 719 around this photo date.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-0 Class K-4 919 at Cheyenne, Wyoming on July 24, 1956, photograph by J. Ehernberger, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 919 was built in 1903 by CB&Q's Havelock, Nebraska Shops as Burlington & Missouri River Railroad 40, renumbered in 1903 to B&MR 3687, renumbered again in 1904 to CB&Q 719 and classed K-4, renumbered one more time in 1951 to 919 to avoid confusion with the C&S diesels. As 719 it was an oil burner and a long-time resident of the light-railed and lonely Sterling-Cheyenne line, last operating in 1956. It was displayed at Alliance, later cosmetically restored and renumbered back to 719.

AT&SF 4-6-0 2438
Title:  AT&SF 4-6-0 2438
Description:  AT&SF 4-6-0 2438 at Claremont, California on an unknown day in December 1976, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a narrow gauge outside frame locomotive, not likely originally AT&SF. The web site steamlocomotive.com places this locomotive in Keizer Station Mall, Salem, OR, and indicated it was originally Ferrocarril Coahuila-Zacatecas No. 6, built by Baldwin in May 1904 (c/n 24252) as a Pacific-type (4-6-2). In 1965 it was sold to Early West Railways, Inc. at La Verne, CA, for a railroad theme park which did not succeed. This locomotive was moved to a railroad theme restaurant (the location pictured here) in Claremont, which did not succeed. In 1981 it was donated to the City of Claremont, CA, who moved it to College Park, until the asbestos scare, when the city put it up for sale. It passed through a couple of owners (one of whom displayed it in Paris, CA) before ending up in Salem, Oregon.
