BN Shop Switcher
Title:  BN Shop Switcher
Description:  Burlington Northern Shop Switcher at West Burlington, Iowa on October 22, 1983, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This shows the other side of the shop switcher, I'm not sure if this was the Engineer's side or the Conductor's side. It was powered by an extension cord (not seen in this view) which could be plugged at various locations around the shop.

BN Shop Switcher
Title:  BN Shop Switcher
Description:  Burlington Northern Railroad Shop Switcher at West Burlington, Iowa on October 22, 1983, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is pretty self-explanatory except for the charging of the air tanks. The BN modified an EMD SD-series truck to move dead locomotives around the shop. By plugging into a convenient DC outlet (note the coiled extension cord) the switcher could move a locomotive from one location to another within the range of the power cable. How did I get this photo, you might ask? I was attending the Burlington Route Historical Society's Meeting in Burlington, and this tour of the West Burlington Shops was part of the package.

C&NW BU4
Title:  C&NW BU4
Description:  Chicago and North Western Railway BU4 at Proviso Illinois on an unknown day in October 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number BU4 was built in October 1949 as C&NW TR2B 2000B (c/n 10023) on EMD Order E1305, was rebuilt December 15, 1961 to Yard Slug BU4, and mated with TR2A 2000A. It was retired May 1, 1980, sold to the KCS becoming KCS 4079. Note the interesting mix of trucks, one is likely in the shop. This appears to be the track the C&NW stored locomotives on temporarily.

C&NW BU5
Title:  C&NW BU5
Description:  Chicago and North Western Railway Yard Slug BU5 at Proviso, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number BU5 was built in October 1949 as TR2B 2001B (c/n 10024) on EMD Order E1305. On June 26, 1962 it was completed as Yard Slug BU5 and mated with its original control unit, TR2A 2001A. It was retired May 1, 1980, sold to the KCS, becoming KCS Yard Slug 4058. The open doors are the likely source of why this unit was sidelined.

It was rebuilt during 1980 to SW14 1434, retired June 8, 1998 and sold to NRE. Note that the Slug retained its friction bearings. The lead locomotive is SW14 1489, built as IC SW9 9474 (c/n 16416) on EMD Order 4121, renumbered to 474, rebuilt during 1981. It appears that sometime between rebuilding of 1434 and 1489 the ICG had a change of heart about the color of the cab numbers.

AT&SF Yard Slug 121
Title:  AT&SF Yard Slug 121
Description:  AT&SF Yard Slug 121 at Corwith Yard in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in May 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Although the slug appears to be unnumbered, by tracing the mother (1310) back at atsfrr.net I was able to determine the number as 121, assigned to GP7 2246 which was later rebuilt and renumbered to 1310. Number 121 was built as NW2 2356 (c/n 918), renumbered to 2406 in August 1945, rebuilt to Slug 121 in July 1973 and assigned to 2246 at Corwith hump yard, sold to National Railway Equipment in September 1988.
