Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad FT 110D westbound at Naperville, Illinois, sometime in July 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This is one of the first color photos I shot as I made the transition from black and white to color. It is a color negative, I finally settled on color slide. This locomotive was built in June 1944 (c/n 2129) on EMD Order E561A and traded for credit on a GP35 order in April 1964. |

CB&Q FT 110D |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad FT 110D westbound at Naperville, Illinois on December 28, 1963, Kodak Tri-X negative by Chuck Zeiler. The following description is by my friend Edward M. DeRouin: A westbound train, possible 67-A, a Cicero - Galesburg maid-of-all-work, has stopped at Naperville to make a connection with the East End Way Freight. The FT #110D&C have cut off their train east of the depot and are backing a 40 foot Canadian Pacific boxcar toward the waiting local. We may speculate that the car is a load of newsprint for delivery to a team track at Downers Grove or La Grange for use by a local newspaper publisher. We will never know if this move was fairly routine or a hot car movement due to a missed connection because of holiday traffic. The picture was taken December 28, 1963. Motors 110D&C are working their final miles. Built in June 1944, they will be traded in on new Chinese red high horsepower GP35's the following April. The waycar (caboose) in the background is the rear of the East End Way Freight which was switching Naperville at the time of this photo. The setout car will be blocked into the way freight's consist and forwarded to the customer. |

CB&Q FT 113A |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad FT 113A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 14, 1962, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. Built in August 1944 (c/n 2189) on EMD Order E561, this was the lead unit of FT locomotive 113, an A-B-B-A set of FT's. During the early 1950's the suffix letter was added as some of the FT sets were broken up. Sorry about the odd angle, as I recall, I was told to mow the lawn, and I wasn't happy about that. As I was mowing, the crossing gates started dropping, and I pondered whether to continue mowing, or run in and grab my camera. As you can see, I opted for the latter, but I was too late. |

CB&Q FT 153C |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad FT 153C westbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 7, 1963, photograph by Chuk Zeiler. This locomotive was built in February 1944 (c/n 2112) on EMD Order E561A as CB&Q FT 102A, the lead cab of locomotive 102, an A-B-B-A set of FT's. When EMD introduced the model F2, the Burlington broke up several sets of FT's, and mated an FT A-B pair with an F2 cab, and renumfered the set, in this case, the FT A-B-F2 set was numbered 153. For maintenance purposes, the FT cab was sub-lettered 153C, although the suffix letter was only visible in one inch lettering below the word BURLINGTON on the side panels. Sometime during June, 1964 this locomitive set was traded to EMD as credit on an order of GP35's. |

CB&Q 13848 |
Description: |
CB&Q 13848 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 15, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The power at the front of this train was GN F-units led by GN FT 403D. One possible explanation for this situation is that the CB&Q (at the time of this photo) assigned the waycar (caboose) to specific Conductors, so for the trip from Galesburg to Chicago, the Conductor's waycar would be attached. |

GN FTA 403D |
Description: |
Great Northern Railway FTA 403D (Built as 302C) eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 15, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Jim Sandrin offers the following explanation for GN power in Naperville. The shots of GN power were primarily on trains 97/88, pool power between Chicago and St. Paul. While GN power was occasionally leased, particularly during the Sugar Beet campaign on lines west, Chuck's photos are of the pool train. Missouri Pacific F-units were leased for a few months and saw service out of Lincoln. A shot in the first (Burlington Route Historical Society) SD Bulletin shows one of these in Lincoln. |
