The AAR legislated that roofwalks were to be removed starting in 1968, to be completed by 1978 for car in interchange service. Generally the roofwalks were left in place if there was a need to access the roof, such a roof hatches, seen here. So I conclude that the roof hatches were no longer used, although there is a stencil stating: THIS CAR EQUIPPED WITH ROOF HATCHES and WHEN EMPTY RETURN TO MONON RR, BAINRIDGE, IND VIA REVERSE ROUTE . |
