MILW F40C 41 westbound at Westen Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, October 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The pictured locomotive was not owned by the Milwaukee Road. All the F40C's were originally built for the Northwest Suburban Mass Transit District (NWSMTD) and the North Suburban Mass Transit District (Nortran), transit districts formed along the two former Milwaukee Road lines, and were originally numbered 40-54 for the Milwaukee Road. Only 15 F40C's were built, all later became Metra 600-614, this one becoming 601. This locomotive wgs built in April 1974 (c/n 73612-4), was named the "City Of Elgin", and was retired in 2005.
