CB&Q E7 9922B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9922B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9922B heading Train Number 11, the Nebraska Zephyr, at Galva, Illinois on October 12, 1956, photograph by P. Stringham, print by William A. Raia, Chuck Zeiler collection. Behind the baggage car is the seven car articulated trainset (one of two such trainsets) from the second Twin Cities Zephyr (TCZ), removed from TCZ service in late 1947 and refurbished at Aurora for Nebraska Zephyr service. Included in the refurbish work was the raising of the floors in the cars 2½ inches. As built the windows were located higher than usual because at the time it was believed that passengers would feel discomfort from observing the train moving at the high speeds attained by the TCZ. The high windows permitted view of the scenery while resticting the view of the ground. The fear of discomfort proved unfounded and, if fact, passengers complained about the resticted view. Gentle ramps were installed for transition from the raised floor to the vestibules. One of the TCZ trainsets is at the Illinois Railway Museum (reduced to a five car set around 1965) and the other set is rumored to be in Saudi Arabia. The locomotive was completed by EMD November 24, 1946 (c/n 2951) and wrecked at Montgomery, Illinois on September 27, 1964. It was scrapped soon after.

Title:  CB&Q E7 9924B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy E7 9924B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 11, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in November 1945 (c/n 2955) on EMD Order E646A and was sold for scrap in February 1968. I marked the slide as the North Coast Limited (NCL). I believe that is in error. I've consulted the June 1965 copy of the Official Guide, which states that Train# 26, the NCL was due at Aurora (10 miles west from this point) at 1:15 PM, and it it early morning judging by the lighting, and the headight in the left background, which would be the East End Way Freight, also a morning train in Naperville. However, the Mainstreeter, Train #48, was due at Aurora at 5:45 AM, and if it was running late, it would fit into this photo quite well. Either way, there was Northern Pacific passenger equipment in this train.

CB&Q E7 9924B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9924B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9924B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 12, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in November 1945 (c/n 2955), sold for scrap in February 1968, it is seen here on an eastbound Dinky. I shot this same locomotive the previous day (Friday) heading east on a passenger train from the Twin Cities. That being the case, I surmise that 9924B was serviced, turned, and sent out to Aurora on a Dinky (commuter train). June 12 was a Saturday, and the Burlington would run its E units back to Chicago during the weekend lull. They would be serviced and rotated into Zephyr service and the E's that were in Zephyr service would be assigned to suburban service. Generally, on Friday evening, the extra E's in Aurora would be ganged up (4-5 per train) on a single car Dinky for the return to Chicago, but sometimes on Saturday there would be a few stragglers left to send back, as seen here. This locomotive was among the first group of E7's acquired by the CB&Q, and were the "Phase 1" design with small numberboards and retractable front couplers. Part of the retractable coupler mechanizm included the buffer plate, the item above the coupler allowing footing when walking between coupled locomotives. There was air-operated apparatus in the nose of the early E7's that extended the coupler and buffer plate, or retracted same, as needed. It soon became apparent that simply leaving the coupler and buffer plate in the extended position simplified maintenance.

Title:  CB&Q E7 9925A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9925A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 30, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Sorry about the lousy photo, The sun was not right for photographs on either side of the track in the early morning. Number 9925A was built in December 1945 (c/n 2956) and sold for scrap in May 1968. On the day of this photo it was in charge of Train #48, the combined Blackhawk and Mainstreeter, dragging various components of CB&Q, GN, and NP trains from the Twin Cities to Chicago.

CB&Q E7 9926A
Title:  CB&Q E7 9926A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9926A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 11, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is somewhat unusual for two reasons: The CB&Q did not typically use E7's on Dinkys (commuter trains) except when they were due for their monthy inspections, and the power car (the first coach, which contained a diesel powered electric generator), is on the east end. The usual arrangement was to place the power car at the west end of the train to keep the noise and fumes away from the passengers as they boarded at Union Station.

CB&Q E7 9926A
Title:  CB&Q E7 9926A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9926A westbound with Train #23, The Afternoon Zephyr, at Naperville, Illinois on June 23, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q had two Zephyrs in each direction between Chicago and Minneapolis - Saint Paul, both were known as the Twin Cities Zephyrs. To distinguish between the two, the AM train was called The Morning Zephyr, the PM train was known as The Afternoon Zephyr. The Afternoon Zephyr departed Chicago at 2:30 PM CST (3:30 locally, DST), and arrived in Minneapolis at 9:50 PM CST. It would depart Minneapolis the next moring at 7:45 AM as Train #22, The Morning Zephyr, arriving in Chicago at 2:40 PM. This photo also illustrates the difference in carbody panels. Some, but not all, of CB&Q's EMD E-units were retro-fitted with stainless steel panels. The lead locomotive has the as-delivered painted (the color was known as Aluminum) panels, and the trailing unit has been fitted with replacement stainless steel panels.

CB&Q E7 9926B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9926B
Description:  CB&Q E7 9926B westbound on Train #11, the Nebraska Zephyr at Naperville, Illinois on July 10, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1947 (c/n 4434) on EMD Order E792A, became BN 9926 on March 2, 1970, and was sold for scrap to Precision June 14, 1971. Although some of the E7's were retro-fitted with stainless steel side panels, records indicate this unit never received them. It is seen here with the as-delivered side panels painted aluminum. This unit did have the louvered door behind the cab door replaced with a sheet metal door. On some E7's this louvered door was found to be unnecessary, although the door access was still used to change out the main air reservoirs, which were located immediately behind the cab bulkhead.

Behind the motors appears to be a Southern Pacific car, most likely a sleeper. The first section would have most of the normal Denver Zephyr consist, including the baggage cars and dormitory car. The second section would need a stand-in dorm car for the train crew (porters and dining car staff), and the SP car likely is filling in.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9927A at the Zephyr Pit (14th Street) in Chicago, Illinois on March 14, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in September 1949 (c/n 4435) on EMD Order E792, it was retired in September 1969 and dismantled in December. This location was known as the Zephyr Pit, built for the first Zephyrs on the west side of the south throat of Union Station. This was adjacent to the CB&Q coach yards. Before this facility was built, the steam locomotives would cut off their trains and run out to the roundhouse at Western Avenue, about a mile or so further to the west.

CB&Q E7 9929A
Title:  CB&Q E7 9929A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9929A westbound on Train #21, The Morning Zephyr (aka Twin Cities Zephyr) a little east of Naperville, Illinois, June 24, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q E7's were delivered with silver (actually, the paint color was called Aluminum) side panels. Some, not all, of the E7's were retrofitted with stainless steel side panels when they were shopped. This photo shows two E7's that received stainless steel panels. The cab and roof remained painted. And here's a note about this particular E7 from Karl Rethwisch, a retired CB&Q Engineer:

An engine used to show up at Aurora Roundhouse for inspection purposes and be gone for 32 days again. This engine caused me more headaches than ALL of the E8's and E9's combined !! The headache I speak of was a CLINICAL headache, not a metaphorical headache. The source of this chronic and sometimes debilitating condition was none other than Miss 9929A herself, dang her !! All E8's and 9's had their control switches neatly arrayed on a panel immediately to the left of, and slightly lower than, the control stand. These switches energized the control circuits, (e.g. fuel pump, generator field, headlight) and such other appurtenances as the Engineer may find useful. The E7's, however, like F units, had a row of these switches just above the Engineer's window. So, after 32 days of hostling 8's and 9's you kinda have a tendency to forget these little nuances of design. Climb up on an engine, go to lean out the window to get a sign from the Roundhouse Helper and BAM !!!!,, 9929A. Every month I'd have a serier of from two to three red welts on my forehead. OUCH !!!!!!!!!

CB&Q E7 9929B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9929B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9929B on Train #21, the westbound Twin Cities Zephyr (aka the Morning Zephyr) at Shabbona, Illinois on April 2, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I am a passenger on the Oregon Way Freight, the last mixed train working out of Eola Illinois to Oregon, Illinois and return. The way freight, an extra train (the orders were written to Extra XXX West, where XXX is the locomotive number), worked the industries between Eola and Oregon, and was also the passenger accommodation, allowing passengers rail travel to points where they could board a Zephyr, or between rural communities on the Burlington's Twin Cities route from Chicago to Savanna and the Twin Cities. I rode this train a few times, and recall one time the way freight stopping at a rural crossing to pick up a woman, who paid her fare in homemade chicken sandwiches. She was let off at the next rural crossing. I got one of the sandwiches, which was delicious of course. She made enough sandwiches for the head-end crew to have some too.

Title:  CB&Q E7 9929B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9929B on westbound Train #11, The Nebraska Zephyr, at Naperville, Illinois on February 28, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1947 (c/n 4440), became BN 9929 on March 2, 1970, sold for scrap to Precision Engineering Co., Mt. Vernon, IL, January 25, 1971. Train #11 handled storage mail between Chicago and Lincoln, Nebraska, and usually had a five car articulated trainset from the Second Twin Cities Zephyr on the rear for passenger accommodations. There were two of these articulated trainsets (one for each direction of the Nebraska Zephyr), but if any one car needed maintenance, the entire five car set had to be removed from service, and a substitute set would be assembled from the cars in the coach pool.

Title:  CB&Q E7 9929B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9929B westbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 23, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1947 (c/n 4440) on EMD Order E792A, became BN 9929 and was sold for scrap January 25, 1971. It is seen here heading Train #21, The Morning Zephyr, through Naperville on its way to the Twin Cities. On this day, the observation car is coupled to the baggage car, the purpose is to save switching charges in Saint Paul by cutting off the locomotivces and baggage car at the station, leaving the train in the station, turning and servicing the locomotives (and baggage car) and returning to the station to couple back onto the waiting train. According to the June 1965 issue of the Official Guide, This train arrived in Minneapolis at 2:50 PM CST, and returned as Train 24, the Afternoon Zephyr, departing Minneapolis at 2:50 PM. I'm not sure how they pulled that off.

Title:  CB&Q E7 9929B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9929B on Train #21, the Morning Zephyr (aka Twin Cities Zephyr) arriving at Aurora, Illinois on March 20, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1947 (c/n 4440), became BN 9929 (3/2/1970) and was sold for scrap January 25, 1971. The fireman is in the cab door to pick up orders as the train enters the Aurora Depot. The careful observer will note that the observation car is coupled to the baggage car, instead of its usual place at the end of the train. As I understand it, this was to save switching charges at St. Paul. Rather than pay St. Paul Union Depot to wye the train, the train was left in the depot, the engines and baggage car would cut off the train and run off to be serviced, returning to the train after turning themselves, and would couple back to other end of the train. The observation car would then be on the rear of the train for the return trip to Chicago.

CB&Q E7 9930A
Title:  CB&Q E7 9930A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9930A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 19, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Sorry about the motion blur, this train snuck up on me. This would have been eastbound Train Number 22, The Morning Zephyr, also known as the Twin Cities Zephyr. However, on this photo date, this was an accommodation train between East Dubuque and Chicago. The Mississippi River had flooded and the tracks at Easr Dubuque were under water. Most CB&Q through trains to and from the Twin Cities were detoured over the Milwaukee Road. To handle the passengers between Chicago and East Dubuque the CB&Q used av`ilable equipment and put together this train which shuttled between the two cities. An interesting side note to this situation; fan trip steam engine 4960 was used in East Dubuque to drag freight cars throughßthe flooded yard in East Dubuque. The water was a foot or two over the rails but not high enough to reach the firebox.

Title:  CB&Q E7 9930A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9930A eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 22, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in September 1947 (c/n 4499) on EMD Order E792A for a total of 11 E7's on this order, it became BN 9930 after March 2, 1970 and was traded to EMD for an order of SD45's on September 2, 1970. This unit was equipped with two Vapor Clarkson CFK 4225 steam generators mounted side by side at the rear of the unit, the exhaust stack of one can be seen as the rectangular shape on the roof. Beginning with units 9925A and B, this became the standard on CB&Q passenger power. It is seen here with an eastbound Dinky (commuter train) in tow, with the power car on the east end of the train. Usually, the power cars were at the west end of all the Dinkys.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9931B on Train #15, the westbound Galesburg Local, east of Naperville, Illinois on May 16, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This was an accommodation train which departed Chicago at 6:20PM, stopping at La Vergne and Downers Grove before arriving at Aurora. These were likely stops for CB&Q employees. Number 15 continued on to Galesburg, making all the stops between. Train #15 (and its eastbound counterpart, Train #2) appeared in the CB&Q Employees Timetable #7 dated effective October 27, 1963, but not in the next timetable, #8, dated effective April 26, 1964, indicating that it was likely discontinued.

Title:  CB&Q E7 9931B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9931B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 14, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1949 (c/n 6501), became BN 9912, and was scrapped April 26, 1972. It is equipped with two steam generators, the evidence being the rectangular exhaust stack to one side at the rear of the unit. It is seen here leading Train #2, the eastbound Galesburg Local, arriving at Union Station at 10:45 AM, according to the CB&Q Chicago and Aurora Divisions Employees Timetable #6, effective April 28, 1963. This train made most of the local stops between Galesburg and Aurora, stopping only at Downers Grove and La Vergne before the last stop in Chicago. It appears in Employees Timetable #7, effective October 27, 1963, but not in #8, effective April 26, 1964, suggesting that this train was cancelled.

Title:  CB&Q E7 9931B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9931B at West Burlington, Iowa on September 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1949 (c/n 6501) on EMD Order E1006A, became BN 9912 sometime after the merger (March 2, 1970) and was sold for scrap to Hyman-Michaels on April 26, 1972. It is seen here undergoing repairs at the Burlington's West Burlington shops. The occasion was steam fantrip powered by 4960, celebrating the birthday of 5632, which was also undergoing repairs at West Burlington. Although 9931B would be returned to service, 5632 would not.

Title:  CB&Q E7 9932B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9932B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in March 1949 (c/n 6503) on EMD Order E1006A, it became BN 9913 and was sold for scrap to Precision Engineering Co (after July, 1971, Precision National) on November 4, 1970. It is seen here heading a section of Train Number 10, the Denver Zephyr, east toward Chicago, about 28 miles from this point. I'm not sure, but this might be the second section of Number 10, since the class lights are not lit. The first car behind the motors (CB&Q term for locomotives) is a heavyweight Pullman, one of several Pullman sleepers purchased by the Burlington during 1948. Normally, heavyweight cars were not used on the Denver Zephyr, and this one was pressed into service as a dormitory car for the train crew (porters and dining car crew).

Generally speaking, the CZ did not have this much head end equipment, usually just a single stainless steel baggage car, so I assume the heavyweight baggage cars is a special move of some sort.

Built in March 1949 (c/n 8490), it became BN 9919 and was sold for scrap on November 4, 1970. It is seen leading the Denver Zephyr east, about 28 miles left on the train's 1034 mile overnight journey. It was unusual for the CB&Q to leave the MU hatch open and the MU hoses in place on the front of the lead locomotive, suggesting that perhaps this was not the lead locomotive when it left Denver the previous day. One might speculate that perhaps the lead locomotive had a mechanical failure, or perhaps encountered a foreign object somewhere during the trip and was removed, and there was not sufficient time for the terminal crew to close the hatch and remove the hoses.

It is seen here leading Train Number 17, the westbound California Zephyr (CZ), the day after Christmas in 1965. Usually the CZ had two locomotives, and the addition of another would indicate extra passengers, and there are two flat top coaches cut in between the baggage car and the first dome.

CB&Q E7 9936A
Title:  CB&Q E7 9936A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9936A on Train #1, The Denver Zephyr, at Berwyn, Illinois on June 27, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Also seen in the distance is E8 9943A approaching the Berwyn station. This is a fortunate situation in that I generally took the train from Union Station, thus should have been aboard the approaching Dinky (CB&Q term for commuter train). I happened to be visiting my friend Chris Burritt in Oak Park, and usually would backtrack by riding the CTA elevated train back into Chicago for the connection to the Q and ultimately, back to Naperville where I lived. But I was running late, so I took the bus down to the Berwyn station, where I caught this scene. I thought I could identify each train, but something is amiss in this shot. Looking at a 1965 calendar, this would be Sunday, which makes the Dinky a Sunday only all-stop train. I noted on the slide that the train led by 9936A is the Denver Zephyr. Here's the problem: according to my copy of the Employee's Timetable #10 in effect on this date, Train #1, The Denver Zephyr, departed Union Station at 5:00PM CST, and Train #225, the Sunday Only Dinky, departed at 5:01PM. Furthermore, the Dinky made five stops before arriving at Berwyn at 5:18. So, I am assuming the the DZ is running slightly late, not an unusual occurrence, especially in the summer, when often not only was it late departing, but sometime an overflow crowd of passengers would cause it to run in sections.
