Title:  C&NW F7 408
Description:  C&NW F7 408 northbound departing the Clybourn Avenue Station in Chicago, Illinois on August 18, 1982, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 408 was built in March 1949 as C&NW F7 4071C (c/n 6607) on EMD Order E1013, regeared from freight (62:15, 65 mph max.) to passenger (57:20, 95 mph max.), a Cummins diesel generator set for 440VAC auxiliary power was installed and the unit was assigned to suburban service during 1960-61. It renumbered during 1971 to 408, sold to the RTA December 31, 1977, leased back to the C&NW the next day for operation, retired May 4, 1983, sold for scrap in January 1985.

C&NW F7 409
Title:  C&NW F7 409
Description:  C&NW F7 409 at the C&NW Station throat, roughly Clinton and Lake Streets in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in July 1978, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I'm getting conflicting information about this locomotive (Utahrails.net list two different c/n's), so it'll take me a bit to sort it out. Here's what the consensus is so far: Number 409 was built in March 1949 as C&NW F7 4068A (c/n 6600) as a freight F7, regeared in 1959 for passenger service, a Cummins diesel generator set for 440VAC auxiliary power was installed and it was assigned to suburban service. In 1971 it was renumbered to 409, on December 31, 1977 it was sold to the RTA and leased back the next day. It was retired by the RTA May 2, 1983, sold to Rails Diversified Inc as 409 in March 1985, resold to Winchester & Western, resold to Maryland Midland RR as 100, resold to Short Line Enterprises as Fillmore & Western 100. In the background is C&NW E8 5027A.

C&NW F7 410
Title:  C&NW F7 410
Description:  Chicago & North Western Railway F7's 410 and 406 at the C&NW's Madison Street Station in downtown Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 410 was the third of four locomotives to carry the road number 410 on the C&NW. This one was built October 1949 as C&NW F7 4082A (c/n 8568) on EMD Order E1188, geared for freight service (62:15). During 1959 it was regeared (57:20) and equipped with Cummins diesel generator set for 440VAC auxiliary power for Chicago suburban service. It was renumbered to 410 during 1971, sold to the RTA December 31, 1977, leased back the next day, assigned RTA number 304 (likely never applied), retired by the RTA in May 1985 and sold to Saint Louis and Chain of Rocks Railroad.

C&NW F7 412
Title:  C&NW F7 412
Description:  Chicago & North Western Railway F7 412 near Canal Street in Chicago, Illinois on May 25, 1982, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 412 is outbound on a Scoot (C&NW parlance for commuter train). The train below has just cut off the Circus World Museum's historic circus train which it brought to Chicago from Baraboo, Wisconsin. The vintage circus wagons will be unloaded and paraded down Michigan Avenue, I got pictures of that too. This is a good example of Stagecoach Yellow seen above, and what became known as Zito Yellow (actually, Pantone 102C), so named for the Vice President-Operations at the time, Jim Zito. Under his directive during the early 1980's, and with concern for improved visibility, it became the new C&NW yellow paint.

This bridge remained because both the Milwaukee Road and the C&NW had installed signals on the structure.

C&NW RDC3m 430
Title:  C&NW RDC3m 430
Description:  C&NW RDC3m 430 at the California Avenue Coach Yard, Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in January 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is a former NH RDC3 converted to a track inspection car. Part of the test apparatus is visible connected to the rear truck. I'm not sure how this car worked, but the following is excerpted from a Burlington Route Historical Society publication of Rail Detector Cars, and that publication contained a reprint of a January 1931 paper by Harcourt C. Drake, presented to the American Institute of Electrical Engineers entitled, 'Transverse Fissure Detector Car':

The Fissure Detector depends for its operation upon the fact that electric current flowing through a rail is compelled to pass around any fracture, inclusion, or separation in the metal. In the detector car, the power plant for the detector equipment consists of a specially designed double commutator 6,000-ampere, 2-volt DC generator directly coupled to a 50 hp engine. Current from the generator is carried by heavy busses to brush units located on either side of the car. In operation the car passes along the track at about 6 mph, with 2,000 to 3,000 amperes flowing through each rail. The current is sensed by the pickup unit, amplified and sent to a recording table, which consists of a moving roll of paper and nine pens (like a polygraph or lie detector). The top pen (landmark pen) is marked by the car's operator to indicate mileposts and other landmarks, the middle two pens record angle bars (rail joints). When the car passes over a fissure, and indication appears on the record. Three recorder pen relays are connected to the output of the amplifier and adjusted to different values of plate current, thus giving an indication of the size of the defect. Other relays are provided to operate paint guns and the defect area is automatically marked with a spot painted on the rail. The operator notes the record, sees the spot painted on the rail, and stopping the car, backs up for a hand test, applying 1,500 amperes to the suspected spot. Examination of the spot with a galvanometer can determine the size of the fissure within a few percent. The car can also find split heads, horizontal fissures, compound fissures, pipes, cracked webs, broken bases and other defects.

C&NW RDC3m 430
Title:  C&NW RDC3m 430
Description:  C&NW RDC3m 430 at California Avenue Coach Yard, Chicago, Illinois, January, 1981, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This is former NH RDC3 130 converted to a track inspection vehicle.

The car in front of it has C&NW reporting marks, but also has Genesee & Wyoming painted on the letterboard. It appears that it was numbered C&NW 404, later C&NW 440 and named "Philip R. Hastings".

Description:  C&NW RDC3m 430 at the California Avenue Coach Yard in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in April 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is a former New Haven RDC3 130 converted to a self-powered track inspection car. It appears that it has sustained minor damage to the front end, I'll bet there's a story to go with that . Also on the roof over the former RPO section is what appears to be a muffler, my best guess is there was some sort of diesel-generator in this section to power the track inspection apparatus.

C&NW RDC3m 430
Title:  C&NW RDC3m 430
Description:  C&NW RDC3m 430 at the California Avenue Coach Yard, Chicago, Illinois, August 16, 1982, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The following is exerpted from the May 1991 edition of Mainline Modeler Magazine:

As built, the RDC3 consisted of a 17 foot Railway Post Office, a 17 foot express room, and a 40 foot, 49-seat passenger section. Some RDC3's were built without RPO apartments, but used an identical carbody to those so equipped. Of the five RDC3's originally owned by the New Haven, #'s 126 and 129 migrated to Pennsylvania DOT ownership, where they were converted to all-coach layout. At first they were assigned to Pittsburgh PAT service, later they sent to SEPTA service in Philadelphia. Still later they were sent to Morrison-Knudsen, converted almost back to the original configuration, but without the RPO apartment, and sent to Alaska.

Another New Haven RDC3, the 130, having been converted to a self-propelled track inspection car, found itself in the employ of the C&NW. The carbody modifications were numerous. On the right side, the RPO door and window were retained, but the baggage door was filled in using matching flutes below the belt rail, replacing the opposite side's RPO window with stainless sheet above the belt. The second and third passenger windows were removed and and relocated to the left side in the former location of the baggage door. That displaced door frame was shifted forward to the position of the left side RPO door, which was discarded. On the passenger end, all cab windows, both end and side, were deepened to within a foot of the floor to provide the observation room. Although the letterboard duplicated the graphics of the original 1950 RDCs, the sides of the ex-NH 130 featured two sizes of C&NW logos, and the car's front end was painted with green and yellow diagonal stripes.

Title:  C&NW RDC3m 430
Description:  Chicago & North Western Railway RDC3m 430 at the coach yard between California and Western Avenues in Chicago, Illinois, August 7, 1983, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This unit was built in 1953 as New Haven RDC3 130 (c/n 5820), went to PC as No. 97. It was one of three RDCs acquired by a German firm, KrautKramer-Ultrasonic Co., who intended to convert them to rail detector cars and compete with Sperry Rail Service. Apparently, the project failed and the car was purchased from KrautKramer by the Chicago & North Western, who renumbered it 430, and used it as a track inspection car.

Title:  C&NW E9BA 501
Description:  C&NW E9BA 501 at Clybourn Avenue in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 501 was built in December 1962 as UP E9B 910B (c/n 27696) on EMD Order 7629. It was sold to PNC and purchased by the C&NW in September 1972. It was rebuilt by the C&NW, received a home-made cab (designated as a Crandall Cab, named after the Assistant Superintendent of Motive Power M. H. Crandall), and became C&NW 501 on May 12, 1973 (held in the accounts as a CGW locomotive). It was retired by the C&NW on December 31, 1977, sold to the RTA and leased back for operation. It was retired by the RTA May 2, 1983, sold to Naporano Iron & Metal as scrapped sometime around June-July 1985.

This locomotive was stenciled; IN MEMORY OF M. H. CRANDALL (below the side cab window). Assistant Superintendent of Motive Power, M. H. Crandall, designed the homemade cabs for the former Union Pacific B-units as seen here. Apparently the cabs were uncomfortable, but I have no first hand knowledge.

C&NW E9BA 502
Title:  C&NW E9BA 502
Description:  Chicago & North Western Railway E9BA 502 a little south of Fullerton Avenue crossing the North Branch of the Chicago River on an unknown day in April 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. By this date the locomotive and cars (except the first two) are in the employ of the Regional Transportation Authorrity (RTA), leased back to the C&NW for operation and maintenance. The first two cars (single level club cars, aka 'banker's cars') are privately owned by Commuter Associates, Inc. for their exclusive use.

Club car service began on the C&NW's commuter lines on April 1, 1929 with a single heavyweight converted coach numbered 6700. As the coach wore out, it was replaced over time, but the replacements were assigned the number 6700. Eventually the service expanded and at its peak (around 1965) it consisted of four cars: 6700, 510, 553, and 555. The last three car numbers related to time; 510 was the historic departure time, 533 and 555 were the arrival times at Lake Forest and Lake Bluff respectively. As service declined, the service demanded less cars, but one remained in service as of the year 2009. Note also that the colors are changing on the equipment, and the club cars will eventually be repainted in RTA colors.
