C&NW F-M H10-44 1064
Title:  C&NW F-M H10-44 1064
Description:  Chicago & North Western Fairbanks-Morse H10-44 1064 at Proviso, Illinois on January 9, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built January 1950 ( c/n 10L285 ) on F-M Order LD-76, it was retired August 19, 1976 and scrapped by C&NW at Oelwein, Iowa. It was powered by a 6 cylinder Opposed Piston diesel engine, had 68:14 gear ratio, was rated at 1,000 horsepower, 240,000 pounds operating weight. It exhibits a Phase I carbody, the generally accepted spotting feature is the overhanging roof at the rear of the cab. However, this is not necessarily an indication of an H10-44 versus an H12-44, as the upgrade from 1000 hp to 1200 hp was a simple change of engine rpm from 800 to 850, while retaining the Phase I carbody.

C&NW S12 1076
Title:  C&NW S12 1076
Description:  C&NW S12 1076 at Proviso, Illinois on February 14, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built July 1951, (c/n 75067), it was repowered by the C&NW with an EMD 567 prime mover during 1966, retaining the original Baldwin hood, retired July 12, 1977.

The model S-12 was the sucessor to the DS-4-4-1000. Production ran from mid-1950 to 1956. By 1955, B-L-H began the phase-out of diesel-electric production. During this period the supply of Westinghouse electrical gear for the switcher line became depleted, forcing Eddystone to begin using General Electric main generators and traction motors. Between the time in 1953 that Westinghouse began contemplating its discontinuance of railroad electrical equipment and the time B-L-H decided to go out of the diesel-electric business, a new, 6-inch longer frame was designed to accommodate the GE gear. The frame was also modified so that the end steps and pilots could be built separately and bolted on rather than welded. By 1956 the end was at hand and with the departure of Erie Mining Co. S-12 403 (October, 1956) after its use in testing the New Haven RP-210s, the book was closed. With the erecting halls shut down, the final tally of the S-series switchers could be made. There had been 63 S-8 switchers sold to 16 customers in a production run of three years, nine months. In six years and one month of S-12 deliveries, 452 units had been delivered to 48 original customers.

C&NW S12M 1078
Title:  C&NW S12M 1078
Description:  C&NW S12M 1078 in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. According to the CNW sign just to the right of the locomotive, this location is 1400 N. Elston Avenue. Looks like a Chicago mobster's ride (er, I mean, a Lincoln Town Car) in the frame, I better get outta here. According to the clock in the steeple, it's a quarter to four. Number 1078 was built by Baldwin in September 1952 as C&NW S12 1108 (c/n 75196), rebuilt by the C&NW in 1964-65 using new EMD 12-567C and retaining the Baldwin hood, renumbered to second 1078 in 1974, retired in June 1980, disposition unknown.

C&NW H10-44 1082
Title:  C&NW H10-44 1082
Description:  Chicago & North Western Fairbanks-Morse H-10-44 1082 at Proviso, Illinois on February 14, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1948 (c/n 10L59) on F-M Order LD-25, it was retired January 1969 and traded to EMD. The following is from Ron Wischer at railroadforums.com, who once worked on these locomotives, and he offers this:

"As for the old F-M 1000 numbered series, not much to say. All the yards here in Milwaukee used 'em as switchers in the mid to late 60's. Stinky little bastards that also blew carbon sparks out the stacks, but they sure did their share of switching. I often got a chance to run one, the controls were really simple. The throttle was mounted in a sideways U shape. Pull down and back and you went forward, up and back and you went backwards. We used to switch 25 to 35 car drags at a time and those little rascals could kick 'em good."

C&NW S12 1118
Title:  C&NW S12 1118
Description:  C&NW S12 1118 at Proviso, Illinois on February 14, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. There wasn't much I could do to save this image, but it's the only shot I have of this locomotive before it was rebuilt in 1966. As for the raised sheets of metal items in the background I can only speculate; it appears to me that they were plates fashioned to drop down on a locomotive's roof to allow safe passage for shop forces. I'll entertain any other speculation.

C&NW S12M 1126
Title:  C&NW S12M 1126
Description:  C&NW rebuilt Baldwin/EMD S12M 1126 at about Michigan Avenue and Illinois Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in July 1978, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The primary purpose of this track at the time of this photo was to serve the Chicago Tribune newspaper, generally moving boxcars of newsprint paper into the track in the foreground. On this day there is a parked automobile to be moved first, and while we're waiting, we have a few human interest stories unfolding. For instance, above the locomotive's headlight, (in the background) someone is unload something from a trunk, and a woman appears to be watching out. On the far center right is a security guard conversing with somebody. And the guys in the lower left decided to park between the trucks to discuss the day's events. The rails behind the locomotive lead to Navy Pier. During the Bi-Centennial, the American Freedom Train was moved (carefully) down these rails and displayed at Navy Pier for a few days.

CNW SL-144 1198
Title:  CNW SL-144 1198
Description:  C&NW SL-144 1198, Chicago, Illinois, September 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive is pictured at a railroad industry trade fair on the site of the IC's Central Station, which had been torn down. In the left background is Soldier Field.

General Electric built this locomotive (c/n 41104) in October 1978 along with what became C&NW #1199 (c/n 41105) as demonstrators. It weighed 136 tons and was powered by two Cummins six cylinder KTA-1150-L diesels producing 550 horsepower each, totalling 1100 horsepower. The two demonstrators tested for two years on the C&NW before going to the BN and renumbered as 1100 and 1101.

C&NW SL-144 1198
Title:  C&NW SL-144 1198
Description:  C&NW SL-144 1198 at Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive is pictured on the site of Illinois Central's Central Station, which had been torn down. It is on display as part of a railroad equipment exposition. At the time I was employed as a photographer by a company that occupied the 52nd floor of that tall white building in the background (Standard Oil Building, later the Amoco Building). I happened to look out the window one day and saw all this equipment at what was normally an empty rail yard. Needless to say, I took an extra long lunch break that day. It probably didn't hurt that I was dressed in a sport coat and tie, looking like I belonged there as a company photographer. Number 1198 was one of two demonstrators built by GE in 1974.

C&NW MP15DC 1313
Title:  C&NW MP15DC 1313
Description:  C&NW MP15DC 1313 at Forest Park, Illinois on May 1, 1975, Kodachrome by J. H. Nixon, Chuck Zeiler collection. As best I can figure out, this unit rolled away (no handbrake set, no one onboard) at Crystal Lake on January 27, 1990 and ran into a parked commuter train at McHenry. The 1313 was damaged (cab crushed) and sat at Proviso for a few years until scrapped in 1994.

C&NW 4-6-0 Class R-1 1385
Title:  C&NW 4-6-0 Class R-1 1385
Description:  Chicago & North Western Railway 4-6-0 Class R-1 1385 about to cross Roosevelt Road (Route 38) a little west of West Chicago, Illinois on September 8, 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Behind the F units was a box car, presumably support equipment for 1385, and gondolas of coal, followed by a few bi-level gallery commuter coaches, and finished by a C&NW business car. Given the situation, I don't see how they provided HEP to the gallery cars.

Title:  C&NW 4-6-0 Class R-1 1385
Description:  Chicago & North Western Railway 4-6-0 Class R-1 1385 a little west of Geneva, Illinois on September 8, 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I'm not certain, but I believe that the cables between the steam locomotive and diesel allowed the Engineer in 1385 to control the diesels. Anyone know for sure? What little I could find so far states it was an EMD supplied control stand.
