CB&Q E9 9995
Title:  CB&Q E9 9995
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9995 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 10, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Baggage cars were not typically part of the consist of the Dinkys (commuter trains) on the CB&Q. Growing up in Naperville, I was once a paperboy, and had first hand knowledge of the purpose of the baggage cars. The Sunday supplements (the funnies, magazine section, and advertising inserts) were printed ahead of time, and sent to the local news agencies for insertion into the Sunday paper usually on Saturday evening. One of my jobs as a paperboy was to go to the Naperville station and collect the supplements which generally arrived on a Wednesday or Thursday. If there were a lot of supplements, usually around holidays, the Burlington would have to add a baggage car to handle the load. There was a minor problem with this, from my point of view. As the train arrived, the baggage handler would open the door and when he saw the platform, he began kicking out the bundles of supplements before the train stopped. At first I thought the guy was just a jerk, but I later found out that this was to prevent delay of the train. If the train was delayed, the conductor would have to fill out a Delay Report, which he would rather not do. If the wire binding did not hold the bundles together as they were kicked out, the paperboy (me) would have to go along the right-of-way and collect all the loose supplements.

CB&Q E9 9995
Title:  CB&Q E9 9995
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9995 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 19, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in August 1954 (c/n 19634) on EMD Order 2065A for six E9's (#'s 9990-9995), this was the highest numbered E9, and for that matter, the highest numbered locomotive on the CB&Q diesel roster. It was not the last E9 delivered, the following year the CB&Q ordered 10 more E9's (#'s 9985A-B through 9989A-B), the CB&Q's final passenger locomotive acquisition. This one went on to become BN 9995 and after rebuilding by Morrison-Knudsen became BN 9925, retired from Chicago commuter service in 1992. Seen here in charge of one of the daily CB&Q Dinkys (commuter train), it has in tow five of the single level coaches, a pair of Budd bi-level stainless steel coaches, and a power car converted from one of the single level coaches. Within a few years, all the single level coaches would be retired, the power cars would survive a few more years to power solid trains of bi-level Budd coaches until 26 E8's and E9's were rebuilt by M-K with Head End Power.

CB&Q E9 9995
Title:  CB&Q E9 9995
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9995 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 26, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Although this locomotive was the highest numbered E9 on the CB&Q's diesel roster, it was not the last one delivered. The Burlington placed it final passenger locomotive order in late 1955 for 10 more E9's, and since these units would not fit above 9995, they were numbered in a slot reserved for the FW&D, 9985A-B to 9989A-B.
