CRI&P GP7R 1275 |
Description: |
CRI&P GP7R 1275, Silvis, Illinois, 8:20 AM, October 27, 1975, photo by J. H. Nixon, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built in November 1952 (c/n 17606) on EMD Order 5155. It appears to have been rebuilt, and has acquired what looks like a standard issue EMD GP20 low nose. I'm sure there is more to the story of this rebuild, and I will attempt to find out what happened. Update, I received the following information from rrboomer: "The cab and short hood were badly damaged, when the crew ran into a cut of cars at Marseilles, IL during a back up move. Head brakeman instead of jumping went up into the cab to operate the left side emergency brake valve and was killed. Happened in 1965 IIRC. It is a GP20 cab and short hood kit that Silvis Shops used. GP9 1321 got the same treatment at El Reno, I don't know the details of that one." |

CRI&P GP7 1502, Blue Island, Illinois, September 8, 1984, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1952 for the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie (a subsidiary of the New York Central System) as 5724 (c/n 16351) on EMD Order 6369, it was later renumbered P&LE 1513, then either sold or leased to Monongahala Railway (MGA, a joint venture of the PRR and the P&LE) becoming 1502, later leased to North Central Texas Railroad (NCTR, incorporated on May 29, 1980, as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad Company to acquire part of the Mid-Continent Route of the former Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad Company) as 1502, leased to the Rock Island Trustees as 1502, further disposition unknown. By the date of this photo, the Rock Island had been shut down for about four years. Based on the number 2 stencilled on this end of the frame, and the letter F stencilled on the other end, this is the rear of the locomotive, which is consistent with NYC practice. |

CSS&SB GP7 1504 |
Description: |
Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad GP7 1504 at Michigan City, Indiana on an unknown day in October 1978, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 1504 was built in November 1951 as C&O GP7 5764 (c/n 15270) on EMD Order 5085. In late 1966 the Interstate Commerce Commission granted approval for the Chesapeake & Ohio to purchase the South Shore. This transaction was completed in 1967, and several GP7's were transferred to that property. Bethlehem Steel would not allow electric locomotives into their facility so diesels were required. Several more Geeps came from C&O to replace aging electric locomotives. These Geeps wore the solid blue with yellow trim of C&O and were numbered 1501 to 1508, a reflection of their horsepower rating. They carried the South Shore logo on their car bodies, no reference to parent C&O other than the colors. Number 5764 became 1504 on the South Shore, returning to the C&O in 1977 and renumbered back to 5764, sold for scrap in 1986. In 1984 the Venango River Corporation purchased the South Shore from Chessie System. |

BN 1586 |
Description: |
Burlington Northern Railroad GP7 1586 at Clyde, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was the Vapor (brand name) standby heater enclosure applied to most CB&Q GP7's and GP9's, in this case, ex-CB&Q GP7 230. Inside was a diesel fueled water heater. The exhaust stack, removed by this date, and was positioned against the `ar body to the roof line. An electrical receptacle is to the right of the lower latch. The idea was to be able to shut down the diesel prime mover in cold weather and use the heater to heat and circulate the cooling water to prevent freezing. Two problems surfaced from this idea; starting the prime mover was difficult with cold batteries, and the locomotive needed to be spotted near an electical outlet. |

Description: |
Burlington Northern Railroad F45 6606 and GP7 1589 at Clyde, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The UP power seen in the background was along for the ride. The two SD40-2's had been picked up fresh from EMD at Congress Park and were being delivered to the UP, I suppose either at Council Bluffs or Omaha. Note orange funnel at the base of the sand tower, used for filling the F45's front sand bins. |

BN F45 6606 |
Description: |
Burlington Northern Railroad F45 6606 and GP7 1589 at Clyde, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 6606 was getting sand, and a portion of that sand is going to the ground. The BN had provided a funnel to prevent this sort of thing, but the funnel suffered from a fatal design flaw; in order for the funnel to work properly, one had to actually use the funnel. This meant climbing down off the locomotive, retrieving the funnel, climbing back on the locomotive with funnel in hand, and placing the funnel in the fill hatch. As seen, that step was skipped. I'll bet these guys were screwing with the new guy. |
