CB&Q GP7 225
Title:  CB&Q GP7 225
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 225 at Naperville, Illinois on March 31, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is the East End Way Freight (known as Extra 225 East to the Dispatcher) departing at Naperville after switching the local industries. The train is backing out onto the main, the gentleman on the steps is preparing to throw the switch, and the train will proceed down the rails in the foreground and grab the empties at Boecker Coal and Grain Company. With empties coupled the front of the locomotive, the train will cross all three main tracks of the CB&Q, grab the empties at Moser Lumber (round top building in the background), and with serveal empty cars coupled to the front, 225 and crew will perform a flying switch to get all those empties behind the locomotive. With the train in order, Extra 225 East will head toward Downers Grove for more switching.

Title:  CB&Q GP7 225
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 225 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 8, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in September 1951 (c/n 14689) on EMD Order 5072, it became BN 1581 and was retired in November 1981. It is seen here as Extra 225 East, the East End Way Freight leaving Naperville and heading toward Downers Grove. This train switched the industries between Eola and Congress Park. This particular GP7 was one of a few that was not equipped with a steam generator, and in this case, a large concrete block occupies the short hood to ballast the front truck.

Title:  CB&Q GP7 226
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 226 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 20, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This is the East End Way Freight (Extra 226 East, to the Dispatcher) which switched the industries between Eola and Congress Park. It has finished the Naperville industries and is heading east, likely the next job will be Pepperidge Farm in Downers Grove where that air slide hopper will be set out.

Title:  CB&Q GP7 226
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 226 on the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois on April 1, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in September 1951 (c/n 14690) on EMD Order 5072, it bewcame BN 1582 and was retired in September 1983. This is the paint scheme the GP7's were delivered in, nicknamed "blackbirds" by the local crews. It would soon exchange this paint for the red scheme, nicknamed "redbird" appropriately enough. It was equipped with a steam generator, and at the time of this photo, the intake and exhaust were covered with steel caps painted to match the roof color.

CB&Q GP7 226
Title:  CB&Q GP7 226
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 226 on the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois on December 8, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built September 1951 (c/n 14690), became BN 1582, and was retired September 1983. It may appear there is dirt in the upper left of this photo, but those are pigeons who took to the air upon hearing a hard coupling. They will make a circle and land back on their home, the top of the Boecker grain elevator in the background. Also pictured is waycar (CB&Q term for caboose) 14351, which for the four years I photographed trains in Naperville was the regularly assigned waycar to the East End Way Freight. It was chalked "E END" on the cupola end by the curved grab iron. It was built at the Aurora Shops in July 1906, became BN 11087, and was retired and donated in January 1971. A note on the donation in the book, Waycars Of The Chicago Burlington & Quincy RR reads: 'Car auctioned off by television station WTTW, Chicago, IL, and sold to a private individual in Prospect Heights, IL on May 1, 1977'. I have no further info at this time.

MP GP7 228
Title:  MP GP7 228
Description:  MP GP7 228 at Stafford, Kansas on August 16, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 228 was built in March 1952 as MP GP7 4230 (c/n 16154), was renumbered to 228 sometime after the 1961 general renumbering, and was upgraded to 1600 horsepower with MP's own four-stack exhaust manifold, which reduced back pressure by as much as 70% (translating into about a 10% increase in horsepower). Renumbered to 1670 (1st) around 1974, it was retired in December 1979.

Title:  CB&Q GP7 233 Fireman's side
Description:  CB&Q GP7 233, Fireman's side at Eola, Illinois on December 28, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q's GP7's were equipped with dual controls, this shows the Fireman's side. A similar set of controls were on the other side of the cab, so the Engineer would be on the proper side of the locomotive no matter which direction it was moving. Looking through the window, you can see a vertical pipe, which was the exhaust pipe for the Vapor Standby Heater, installed on the running board in front of the cab on the long hood side. The purpose of the heater was to heat and circulate the cooling water through the engine block when it was shut down in cold weather to prevent freezing.

CB&Q U25B 100
Title:  CB&Q U25B 100
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad U25B 100 at Clyde, Illinois on February 19, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The U25B was a bold move, since the CB&Q was a loyal EMD customer for a couple of decades. One assumes there is a story from the front offices to go with this photo, but the CB&Q acquired its first non-EMD road units in this order of these six U25B's (#'s 100-105) in 1964. It surely sent a message to EMD. This locomotive was built in September 1964 (c/n 35194), became BN 5424, and was retired in May 1981. Behind the U25B is a F3B and an SD24. On the other track is GP7 233.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 234 on the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois, September 3, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. If this is not this locomotive's first assignment after leaving the paint shop in its shiny new "redbird" paint scheme, it is one of the first. It was delivered in what was termed the "blackbird" paint scheme by the local crews in September 1951 (c/n 14698), became BN 1590 and was retired in October 1982. Although it is equipped with a steam generator, the intake and exhaust stacks are covered with steel caps to keep out the weather.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 234 westbound on the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois on July 30, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. You may notice some lumber on the locomotive's walkway. This was rejected wood from one of the lumber yards switched by the way freight, either split or warped, that was tossed on a scrap pile. It was "acquired" by one of the crew and placed on the walkway where it would be conveniently spotted near the parked automobile of said crew member when the locomotive was terminated near the the Eola roundhouse at the end of the day.

Title:  CB&Q GP7 234
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 234 at Naperville, Illinois on April 12, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is the returning (westbound) East End Way Freight, the evidence is the waycar (CB&Q term for caboose), #14351, regularly assigned to the East End job. The East End Way Freight worked all the industries between Eola and Congress Park, starting about 7:00 AM and returning (seen here) when the work was completed. Usually it would have a few empties to return to Eola, but not today. The way freight always ran as an extra train, in this case, this train is known as Extra 234 West.

CB&Q GP7 241
Title:  CB&Q GP7 241
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 241 and crew at Oregon, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. I'm working on crew ID. This was the power for the Oregon Way Freight, which I rode occasionally in 1963 and 1964. It was the last mixed train out of Eola. In place of the usual waycar, this train featured a 40 foot combine number 3003. In addition to serving freight customers between Aurora and Oregon, the way freight also provided passenger accommodations between those two points. On this date I was the only passenger, somewhat irritating to the Conductor ( the gentleman on the far right, "Hummy" Humiston ), who had to fill out additional paperwork for a single passenger.

CB&Q GP7 242
Title:  CB&Q GP7 242
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 242 on the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois on March 30, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in November 1952 (c/n 14706) on EMD Order 5148, it became BN 1598 and was retired in August 1983. I believe this would be considered a Phase II GP7, it has the oval inspection cutouts in the skirting over the fuel tank. It is not equipped with a steam generator, the evidence being the lack of a second filler connection in the same skirting over the fuel tank, and no visible intake or exhaust stacks on top of the short hood. I had an opportunity to visit the short hood of a GP7 without a steam generator, and it was ballasted with a concrete cube about the size of two refrigerators.

CB&Q E9 9988B
Title:  CB&Q E9 9988B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 242 and E9 9988B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 30, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The GP7 is leading the East End Way Freight east, having finished switching the industries on both sides of the tracks in Naperville. Since the way freight occupies Track 3, the Dinky is on Track 2, and the commuters were briefly the main ingredient in a train sandwich at the station seen in the background. The Dinky is overtaking the way freight but will stop at Lisle, four miles further east, allowing the way freight to catch up. This will continue until Downers Grove, a likely stopping point for the way freight to perform a few more switching duties usually at Pepperidge Farm.

CB&Q GP7 242
Title:  CB&Q GP7 242
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 242 on the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois on December 28, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The brakeman pictured was Roger Taylor, who didn't appreciate being out in the cold weather. Soon after this photo, he transferred to the Passenger Department and became a Collector on commuter trains. I once spoke to Kenneth Boecker, son of the gentleman who owned the grain tower in the right background, and he shared the following story:

Near the end of steam on the CB&Q, the newest steam power had been bumped from mainline duties, but were still in good shape. One was assigned to the East End Way Freight. The way freights on the CB&Q were typically handled by the R-class 2-6-2's, but they had been retired. One day one of the newer ( and larger ) locomotives had to perform this switching duty you see pictured here, a move down a slight grade and fetch an empty hopper and pull it back up to the CB&Q main. The locomotive got down OK, but when climbing back up, it slipped and the rails rolled over under the locomotive. There was nothing to do but call for the wrecker. The fire was banked (not sure if it was a coal or oil burner) and the locomotive was left for the evening. Needless to say, all the local kids found it and it was a playground for the next few hours, with much whistle blowing, until the cops came around and chased everyone away.

CB&Q GP7 243
Title:  CB&Q GP7 243
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 243 eastbound with the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois on September 6, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. In addition to a steam generator, this locomotive was equipped with the apparatus necessary to permit it to operate on part of the C&NW to Sterling. The box on the running board ahead of the Engineer contained C&NW-style Automatic Train Control equipment.

CB&Q GP7 244
Title:  CB&Q GP7 244
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 244 switching at Naperville, Illinois on April 7, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in November 1952 (c/n 14708) on EMD Order 5148, it became BN 1600 and was retired in September 1983. It is seen as the power for the East End Way Freight (to the Dispatcher, this is Extra 244 East) switching the industries in Naperville.

The locomotive is equipped with a steam generator, and has a box on the running board ahead of the engineer's front window, which I believe is for Automatic Train Control equipment. A similiar box appears on the top of the boiler on steam locomotive 4960. Here is an expanation from Karl Rethwisch, retired CB&Q Engineer: Chuck, to my knowledge the 243 and 244 were the only Q Geeps fitted with Automatic Cab Signal equipment. They would, occasionally, show up on the Galesburg Local passenger job. I know of no reasons why these two engines were so equipped.
