AT&SF RSD5 2134
Description:
Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway RSD5 2134 at La Junta, Colorado on August 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler+ On the date of this photo, number 2134 was the station switcher at La Junta, and has just moved the power to the waiting eastbound Train Number 24, The Grand Canyon, and is about to be cut off. According to the book, "Moving Mail And Express By Rail", by Edward M. DeRouin, the Santa Fe had the US Mail contract between Chicago and Los Angeles. Working Railway Post Office (RPO) cars were required on certain trains between Chicago, Kansas City, La Junta, Albuquerque, and Los Angeles. However, not all trains were required to have a RPO west of La Junta. In this case, the RPO was removed from westbound Train #23, The Grand Canyon. Upon arrival of eastbound Train #24, the switcher removed the power, set it out, switched the RPO onto the head end, and placed the power back on the train (seen here). The Grand Canyon will continue on to Kansas City, where this procedure will be repeated, and a second RPO will be added for the final leg of the trip to Chicago. The mail contract required 60 linear feet of RPO space between La Junta and Kansas City and 90 feet between Kansas City and Chicago. The Santa Fe kept spare RPO's at La Junta and Kansas City (and likely other locations) in the event one was bad ordered or rejected by the Post Office, and the Post Office would levy fines if the contract was not fulfilled. Postal employees could (and did) reject RPO cars if they deemed them to be in an unacceptable condition. The Post Office always collected the fines because they deducted them from the bill the railroad sent to them for the RPO services.

Description:
Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway F3 27L eastbound at La Junta, Colorado on August 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I believe this is Train #24, The Grand Canyon. Number 27L (note a small letter L is painted on the middle yellow stripe above the buffer and below the nose door) was built as the lead unit of locomotive 27 in May 1948 (c/n 5407) on EMD Order E902A. It was rebuilt in February 1971 to CF7 2642, later becoming ECRX 2642. It is seen here waiting on a side track after the station switcher placed a Railway Post Office car on the head end of the train. An Alco RSD5 will couple this power and place it back at the head end, which will then continue on to Kansas City and ultimately Chicago.

Number 31C (note a small letter C is painted on the middle yellow stripe above the buffer and below the nose door) was built as the trailing cab of locomotive 31 in September 1948 (c/n 6616) on EMD Order E1014A. It was rebuilt August 30 1971 to CF7 2636, retired from the AT&SF June 26, 1987, sold to NRE, who sold it to the Washington Central, becoming WCRC 402 during July 1988. It is seen here as the trailing cab of an A-B-B-B-A locomotive backing to couple to eastbound Train #24, The Grand Canyon. An Alco RSD5 is at the other end (note the Alco smoke in the background), shoving these locomotives toward #24. A Railway Post Office car has been placed at the head end of the train for the continuation of the trip to Chicago. At Kansas City, this procedure will be repeated and another RPO will be added there. The AT&SF had the mail contract between Chicago and Los Angeles, but the RPO's were not needed west of La Junta.

Number 31C is being moved to its train and will be will be the trailing unit on Train #24, the eastbound Grand Canyon. If I remember the situation correctly, the locomotive set was being changed out, the road crew was not allowed to make the move on their own within the station yard limits, and the station switcher (RSD5 2134) was required to move the road engines. Previous to this the station switcher added a RPO car to the consist of #24, per the railroad's contract with the U. S. Postal Sevice. The RPO was not needed (paid for) west of La Junta.

BAR BL2 56
Description:
BAR BL2 56, location unknown, June 1974, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in April 1949 as #556 (c/n 8616), it is one of 59 of this model built (including the BL-1 demonstrator, later rebuilt to BL-2), one of eight on the BAR roster. It was powered by a 16-cylinder Model 567B prime mover, and some were built with steam generators, evidenced by an exhaust stack which was positioned between the two windshield panes up against the center post dividing them. At the time of its construction, Alco dominated the road switcher market with its RS-1 and sucessor RS-2, and EMD needed something with which to compete. This locomotive was the predecessor to the GP-7.

Built in February 1949 (c/n 5989) on EMD Order E963A, it became C&NW 113A after the July 1968 merger, and in 1971 it was renumbered 212 (2nd). This model is sometimes referred to as an F5 because it was built with F3 components but upgraded (D27B) traction motors, although EMD never had an F5 in their catalog. CGW F3 113C
Description:
Chicago Great Western Railway F3 113C in Saint Paul, Minnesota on February 5, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1949 (c/n 5990) on EMD Order E963A, it retained the CGW road number for a few years after the July 1968 merger, renumbered to 213 in 1971, retired, traded to EMD and scrapped by Saint Louis Auto Shredding (Madison, Illinois) in June 1985. Some folks refer to this as a model F5, however, EMD considered it an F3, built with F3 components in the latest carbody refinement which carried over to the first production F7's. It was equipped with upgraded traction motors (D27B), thus setting it apart from earlier F3's.

Description:
Chicago Great Western Railway F3 114C in Chicago, Illinois, August 20, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1949 (c/n 5992) on EMD Order E963A, it retained the CGW road number when the CGW and C&NW merged in July 1968, and was sold to Chrome Crankshaft sometime before 1971. Often erroneously referred to as an F5, this was a Phase IV F3, built in the final F3 carbody which carried over to the Phase I F7, but using EMD D27B traction motors. There was no F5 in EMD's catalog.

CGW F3 115C
Description:
Chicago Great Western Railway F3 115C in Chicago, Illinois on August 20, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1949 (c/n 5994) on EMD Order E963A for six F3A's. Sometime after July 1, 1968, it became C&NW 216. It is a Phase IV F3, utilizing the carbody the has become accepted as the F7 carbody, although from EMD's point of view, it is the improved F3 carbody carried over to the F7. The spotting difference is up on the roof: a Phase IV F3 has a pair of rectangular grid openings behind the cab for the dynamic brakes (if so equipped), and a Phase I F7 has a 36 inch fan.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 116D at the Clyde, Illinois Diesel House on March 26, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. You might think this is creative framing, with the flanged wheels appearing out of focus in the lower left. Truth be told, I was using the next set of wheels as my tripod, and I could not move the wheels in front out of frame. This locomotive was built in October 1947 (c/n 4405) on EMD Order E790 and traded in for a U28B during December 1966.

CB&Q F3 121A
Description:
CB&Q F3 121A east of Eola, Illinois on Sunday October 11, 1964, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built during November 1947 (c/n 4465) on EMD Order E790A and was sold for scrap in May 1965 to Precision Engineering. This image is a result of my having missed the eastbound Dinky (commuter train) in Aurora, and the next Dinky was two hours later. Heck, I could walk home (to Naperville, 10 miles east) in two hours, and that's what I did. I shot photos along the way, and this location is about a half mile east of the EJ&E overpass in Eola. As it turned out, the next Dinky beat me to Naperville, but not by much.

CB&Q F3 122D
Description:
A poor image of Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 122D eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on May 16, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. Obviously, the this train caught me off-guard and I arrived late to the scene. Of interest to CB&Q fans are the MU connections, one of only eight F-units on the Burlington to receive MU connections on the nose in the early 1960's. Number 122D was built in April 1948 (c/n 5875) and traded in January 1967 for new power.
