BN SW1 97
Title:  BN SW1 97
Description:  BN SW1 97 at Clyde, Illinois on an unknown day in January 1981, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in February 1941 as CB&Q SW1 9153 (c/n 1285) on EMD Order E375, most of its CB&Q career was spent as the Aurora (Illinois) depot switcher. It was retired by the BN in August 1983 (although it may have been out of service earlier, note the capped stack), later becoming ILSX 1366. I'm no expert, but it looks to me like an oil leak sidelined this locomotive.

IHB SW7 8839
Title:  IHB SW7 8839
Description:  Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad SW7 8839 and New York Central Railroad SW1 611 at the Chicago Junction yard in Chicago, Illinois on May 9, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 8839 was built in January 1950 (c/n 8130) on EMD Order E1136, became PC 8839 and possibly CR 8867, scrapped by the CR at Hollidaysburg. Number 611 was built in October 1950 (c/n 11768) on EMD Order 6115, and later became NYC/PC/CR 8437.

This is an interesting location, by the date of this photo, it is the property of the Chicago River & Indiana Railroad, a subsidiary of the New York Central Railroad. From the beginning of the 20th Century, this had been the property of the Chicago Junction Railway (a company formed by merging the Chicago and Indiana State Line, and Chicago, Hammond and Western on April 26, 1898) to form the Chicago Junction Railway, with the Union Stock Yard & Transit Company of Chicago (USY&T) as the parent company, and although the CJ owned but 2.185 miles of track, it appears that it was the last two miles into the Chicago Union Stock Yards, so if your intention was to get livestock delivered to the stockyards, you had to deal with the CJ (NYC). On May 19, 1922, the New York Central Railroad bought control of the Chicago River and Indiana Railroad (CR&I) and simultaneously leased the Chicago Junction to the CR&I. On August 26, 1958, the CR&I acquired the property of the Chicago Junction and lessor USY&T, and in 1976 the Conrail acquired the CR&I's lines.

NYC SW1 618
Title:  NYC SW1 618
Description:  NYC SW1 618, Chicago, Illinois, May 9, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Admittedly a bad photo, but it's all I have. The NYC had two SW1's numbered 618, the first was built in 1942. This one has a single taper from the hood to the cab, rectangular cab windows, and a twin sealed beam headlight, indicating that it is a late model (Phase II) SW1. That being the case, this locomotive was built in June 1950 (c/n 11785) on EMD Order 6116, was renumbered NYC 8444, then became PC 8444, and later became CR 8444. It was traded to EMD.

NYC SW1 657
Title:  NYC SW1 657
Description:  NYC SW1 657, Union Station, Chicago, Illinois, February 27, 1966, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built as number 607 in April 1939 (c/n 815) on EMC Order E217, class DES-6b on the NYC, it was renumbered to NYC 657, later to NYC 8455, then PC 8455. It is seen here on the north (Milwaukee Road) side of Union Station, likely transferring storage mail from the NYC to the Milwaukee Road. The Milwaukee held the mail contract between Chicago and the Twin Cities.

AMTK SW1 732
Title:  AMTK SW1 732
Description:  Amtrak SW1 732 at Lumber Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in May 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Nearly every PRR passenger and mail train in an out of Chicago's Union Station had to negotiate these rails. This shows part of a complicated switching maneuver in which this train, having arrived in Chicago, is then dragged backward about a mile to clear the 22nd Street Interlocking, then shoved up the former leads to Dearborn Street Station to clear the reverse tracks to the former AT&SF coach yard. At that point, this SW1 will be on the wrong end of the train, as the Santa Fe's facilities were stub end, which is where this train will be shoved in and serviced.

Amtrak SW1 732
Title:  Amtrak SW1 732
Description:  Amtrak SW1 732 at Canal and 16th Street in Chicago, Illinois on June 7, 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. On a hazy Chicago day, Amtrak SW1 732 is about to wye a train through the Union Avenue interlocking. It appears the number 732 was built in May 1949 as NYC SW1 605 (c/n 6411) on EMD Order E999, later became NYC 8431, then PC 8431, then AMTK 245 (2nd) then AMTK 732. In the background is BN NW2 543, delivered to the CB&Q in August 1946 as 9246 (c/n 3642), awaiting its turn through the interlocking. Overhead is a C&NW transfer on the Saint Charles Air Line. This was the Illinois Central's (by this date, the ICG) westward main line through Illinois and Iowa. The name "Air Line" denotes that the rails ran as straight as possible, as if a line was drawn in the air, avoiding as many curves as was possible. The caboose (#12557) was a Rock Island wide vision, but has acquired steel plating over the cupola windows, likely in conformance to FRA glazing regulations.

Amtrak SW1 733
Title:  Amtrak SW1 733
Description:  Amtrak SW1 733 at Wilmington, Delaware on an unknown day in May 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 733 was built by EMC in May 1939 as first NYC SW1 616 (c/n 877) on Order E239, was renumbered to NYC 666, then NYC 8464, becoming PC 8464, then second Amtrak 246, then Amtrak 733. It appears that it was retired around February 1980, sold to Naporano Iron and Metal and scrapped.

Title:  AMTK SW1 736
Description:  Amtrak SW1 736 at 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The train is on the former leads to Dearborn Street Station, closed and razed (except the headhouse) when Amtrak took over rail passenger service in the early 1970's. These rails remained for a while to serve as switching leads to the former AT&SF coach yard (off to the right) until the former PRR coach yard could be upgraded.
