CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5614
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5614
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5614 at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in September 1956, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Assembled during July 1937 by the CB&Q's at the West Burlington Shops, the boiler was supplied by Baldwin. It was retired and donated to the City of Saint Joseph, Missouri during May 1962. I've classed this locomotive as an O-5-B. It was built as a coal-burning class O-5-A, but at some point was converted to burn oil, so I assume it was re-classed.

CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5618
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5618
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5618 on a fantrip, photographer unknown, hand written on the slide mount is: 'Ill-Wis Line St. Croix River July 4, 1958'. The Saint Croix River is located near Saint Paul, Minnesota, so if this is the state line between Illinois and Wisconsin, then this mght be the Wisconsin River in the background, or this may be northbound shot with the Mississippi River in the background. I speculated on the location of Cassville, being a town close to the state line. Anyone with more correct info please leave a comment. Also, although Baldwin did not construct this locomotive, it was assembled from components at the CB&Q shops in West Burlington, Iowa, and Baldwin did manufacture the boiler. See Comments below for more information.

CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5622
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5622
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5622, location and date unknown, print stamped Burlington Route Photo, credit line will be appreciated, Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Co. Advertising Dept., 547 W. Jackson, Chicago, print scanned from Louis Zadnichek collection. The print was also stamped: John Gibb Smith Jr. 6701 N. 12th Street, Philadelphia. Hand written on the print was the following: CB&Q RR Late No. 5622, O-5-A 5622 high speed freight & passenger locomotive built in CB&Q shops at West Burlington, Iowa. Two of these engines are now in service; three more will be completed this fall. 38722A.

According to the book, 'Steam locomotives Of The Burlington Route', by Bernard G. Corbin and William F. Kerka, number 5622 was completed at West Burlington in August 1938, so this photo was likely shot around that date. The boilers were built by Baldwin, and the builder's plate on the smokebox would show Baldwin Extra Order 6675. There were five boilers built on Extra Order 6675, which were applied to locomotives 5621 through 5625. The rest of the locomotive was assembled from components from various suppliers. Number 5622 was retired in May 1960.

Hol Wagner adds: That is indeed the west end of the West Burlington storehouse, with the main erecting shop's east end just out of view behind the photographer to the right. And of course this means the view is of the north side of the locomotive, thus the sun is on the other side. Fred Lehmann must not have been able to get them to move the 5622 down the length of the erecting shop and into the clear for a south side photo.

CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5625
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5625
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5625 at Eola, Illinois on December 14, 1952, photographer unknown, print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5625 was assembled by the CB&Q at West Burlington, Iowa, completed in October 1938, sold for scrap in March 1954. In 1942 this locomotive was fitted with the Franklin steam distribution system employing poppet valves. Note the lack of eccentric rod. One of the primary objectives of the system was to employ relatively small diameter poppet valves, both for intake and exhaust, in this permutation five valves of both types (in the online patent design search, it was two supply poppets and three exhaust poppets) grouped in a manner to maintain the cylinder port clearance volume at a minimum. In poppet valve locomotive engines, especially of relatively large size, the cylinder port walls, because of their rather extended area, have been subject to warping, as a result of thermal changes. Any such warpage is likely to be reflected in distortion of the valve seats and the detrimental effect of such distortion is more serious with large diameter poppet valves than with small diameter valves. The employment of multiple small diameter valves is therefore of advantage in overcoming difficulties due to valve seat distortion. Although poppet valves operated well enough when they were carefully maintained, they could not stand up under the abundance of power that was packed into the Class O-5 Northerns. After a trial life of a few years, number 5625 was retired in 1954 and eventually scrapped, rather than invest money converting it back to original status.

CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5626
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5626
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5626 at Lincoln, Nebraska on an unknown day in September 1956, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was assembled from components by the CB&Q in April 1940 at West Burlington, Iowa. The boiler was built by Baldwin, a variety of parts were from General Steel Castings, the final assembly was done at the CB&Q's main shops in West Burlington. This was one of the last steam locomotives assembled by the Burlington, this final series was in the 5621-5635 number series originally classed as O-5-A. They were fitted with cast steel solid pilots, soot blowers, box-pok 74 inch drivers, lightweight rods, roller bearings, and vestibule cabs, 250 psi boiler pressure, and had a tractive force of 67,500 pounds. As is the case here, some were rebuilt as oil burners and re-classed as O-5-B.

CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5626
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5626
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5626, date, location, and photographer unknown ( My guess is June 10, 1959 at Fort Collins, Colorado), print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5626 was assembled by the CB&Q at West Burlington, Iowa, completed in April 1940, sold for scrap in November 1960. This locomotive was used on a few fan trips, and on one such trip in June 1959 powered an Illini Railroad Club 'Journey To Yesterday' fan trip. On the return trip to Chicago just a little bit east of Denver, CO, one of its eccentric rods broke at speed disabling the locomotive. Since the Burlington was no longer making heavy repairs to steam power by that date, 5626 was condemned and sold for scrap. I posted an inquiry on the CB&Q Yahoo Group and got this reply from Hol Wagner:

You guessed well; it is indeed at Fort Collins on June 10, 1959, on the 'private' trip Howard Fogg ran from Denver to Fort Collins and return for invited guests. The man in the white cap up on the tender is C&S road foreman of engines R.E. 'Mickey' Hansen, who generally ran the engine on every fantrip over the C&S. He can be seen in the cab of the photo I posted a couple of weeks ago taken on this same trip at Church's Lake and showing the engine's Chinese red cab roof.

CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632 at Naperville, Illinois on May 25, 1962, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This train caught me by surprise. I was at home two blocks away when I heard the whistle. I grabbed my camera and ran out the door, catching a side shot of the train as it passed by. I snapped a few more photos as it rolled west, then realized it was stopping at Naperville, a highly unusual event. I ran as fast as I could, followed by a few other folks also caught by surprise. The event was a steam trip for school children, who were loading at the station while I was running to catch up. The train was ready to depart as I snapped this photo. I don't know the destination of the train, but generally the trips for school childen went to state parks. For those interested, the number 1286 on the signal bridge indicated Track 1 Milepost 28.6, the next number (2286) indicates Track 2, same locaion.

CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632 with the front coupler in the up position eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on July 21, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Once upon a time the CB&Q ran steam powered fan trips almost every Sunday. There was a LP record made titled, "Sunday Only", which was recordings of sounds made by locomotives 4960 and 5632. Often a baggage car was provided behind the locomotive for sound recording enthusiasts. On this trip however, air conditioned suburban coaches (powered by a generator in the coach behind the tender) were provided, the last two coaches were heavyweight coaches, generally with open windows for those who preferred that accommodation. The last car is a mill gondola, with drop ends, for those that wanted that experience. On the way out, the gondola was behind the tender, providing as much noise and dirt as you could handle.

CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632
Description:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632 coupler up westbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 18, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. The date is speculative, I dated the entire roll of film 8/15/1963. Looking at a 1963 calendar, the 15th is a Thursday, and typically, the fantrips ran on Sunday. There is a shot of 4960 several frames earlier on the same roll of film, so I'm guessing that 4960 ran on the 11th and 5632 ran on the 18th.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632 departing westbound at the Aurora, Illinois depot on October 11, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler This was one of many CB&Q steam excursions in 1964, this one headed by 4-8-4 5632. The orange car cut in behind the tender is the Chief Illini, the private car of the Illini Railroad Club, the railroad club of the University of Illinois. It was originally a Pullman observation named Inglehome, was bought by Maury Kleiboldt and was for a while a regular fixture on CB&Q steam excursions. Retired in 1968, today it resides at the Illinois Railway Museum.

CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-B 5632 at West Burlington, Iowa on September 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 5632 was built in this shop, completed in August 1940. It was selected for fan trip service in the 1960's, and was in the process of overhaul on this photo date. The event was a birthday special powered by diesel from Chicago to Galesburg and by 4960 from Galesburg to West Burlington and return. The plan had been to return 5632 to fan trip service, however, fate stepped in. The President of the CB&Q, Harry C. Murphy, retired and control of the CB&Q was in the hands of Louis W. Menk. Menk had no interest in steam or fan trips, the programs were quickly teminated, and 5632 and a few boxcars of parts and machinery were sold to Richard Jensen. Unfortunately, Jensen stored the disassembled 5632 (no flues or staybolts) in a C&WI roundhouse around 47th Street in Chicago, which was soon abandon and slated for demolition. Although 5632 was moved to the south side of Chicago for storage, it derailed in a scrap yard and was cut up on the spot. More information here:
