CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960, date, location, and photographer unknown, print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. The chosen date and location based on the February 1, 1952 CB&Q Locomotive Assignment Sheet. This appears to be a shot of 4960 before fan trip assignment. Number 4960 was built by Baldwin in August 1923 (c/n 56809).

CB&Q 2-8-2 O-1-A 4960
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 O-1-A 4960
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 7, 1961, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This photo shows two personal experiences by myself. The first is the angle of this photo, achievable only from the bedroom of the house next to the tracks on Loomis Street in Naperville, and I happened to live there. Unfortunately, my bedroom was on the side away from the tracks, so I had to run into my parents room to get this shot. The second experience was that I participated in the railfan safety violation as seen here. The idea was to wait in the power car until the Conductor got busy elsewhere. Then we ran through the generator room and would hang out on the forward vestibule riding right up against the tender, until we got caught, and this was before the canteen tender was added. Good experiences, good smells too.

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 westbound at Aurora, Illinois on July 4, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. I didn't have enough sense to save the flyer from this trip, so I don't know the destination. The consist was: 4960, C&S auxiliary tender 99518, CB&Q mill gondola 197193, a heavyweight coach, a heavyweight diner, three bi-level commuter coaches, a 7300 series single level coach/power car, another heavyweight coach, and another mill gondola. As I recall, safety railings were welded to the diaphrams of the heavyweight coaches to permit safe passage from the gondolas to the rest of the train.

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 westbound at Aurora, Illinois on July 4, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Once upon a time, you could ride behind a coal burning steam locomotive, and not complain because you got a cinder in the eye. Most of the gentlemen in the gondola are wearing goggles, and from personal experience, I can attest that this was required eyewear for a fantrip like this. You were also shampooing cinders out of your scalp fo the next few days if you didn't wear a hat.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 22, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a bit unusual to see a solid train of stainless steel coaches on a fantrip. My notes indicate this was a trip to Rockford, Illinois. On the rear is the Silver Solarium, the spare dome-observation from the California Zephyr pool.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 at Naperville, Illinois on November 29, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a steam special for local school children. Earlier the special picked up the chldren and left Naperville westbound to an unknown destination. Upon return, the childern were unloaded, and the train backed from Naperville to Aurora as seen in this photo. This locomotive had a steam leak on this side for a short period of time.

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on December 5, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. About a mile behind this scene to the west was River Road. At the time of this photo, River Road was not heavily traveled, and warranted only crossbucks to protect motorists. All trains would signal the usual two longs - one short - one long, crossing signal, giving me a moment to decide if I should grab my camera. Of course, a steam whistle instead of a horn is reason enough to get the camera and get out in the cold. Here is 4960 running light eastbound, likely heading for a fantrip assignment out of Chicago. I have no information about that trip, although I have a flyer for the trip the following week, December 13, a Santa Claus Special from Chicago to "Santa Claus Land" and return. I have no idea where Santa Claus Land was, but it was two hours out of Aurora, and would have been a place where the train (or at least, the locomotive) could have been turned. However, on this day the CB&Q gave me an early Christmas present, my very own personal photo runby.

Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad O-1-A 4960 photo runby at Leland Illinois on March 21, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Obviously, Marty Bernard and I were on the same fantrip, but didn't know each other. He posted a photo here: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=806070 which is a much better version of this shot. It shows the same steam leaks from what appears to be a problem with the Worthington feedwater heater pump. I looked at my slide mount, and it is not Kodak, so I assume I was using some off-brand film. Such were the economics of a 17 year old in 1965.

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 at Zearing, Illinois on March 21, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a fantrip between Chicago and Zearing. Zearing was chosen because it provided the means to turn the train. In this case, it was the interchange between the CB&Q and NYC, with NYC tracks passing over the Q, and a connection was on each side. Number 4960 is on the NYC rails passing over CB&Q rails, in the process of turning the train for the return trip.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 on a fantrip at Leland, Illinois on March 21, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Every shot on that trip featured that steam leak in the Worthington pump area, obscuring the running gear behind. I should have written a letter of complaint, maybe I would have gotten my $7.50 fare back.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 at Wedron, Illinois on June 20, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Wedron was a source of revenue and locomotive sand for the CB&Q. Note the gentleman on the far left. There always seem to be at least one guy who didn't want to be in the photo line. Those guys hanging out of the baggage car door were getting sandbasted with all the spilled sand 4960 was kicking up.

C&S 99518
Title:  C&S 99518
Description:  Colorado & Southern Railway auxiliary tender 99518 and CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 at Flagg Center, Illinois on June 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a fantrip from Eola to Oregon and return, featuring 2-8-2 4960 working the Oregon Way Freight. About ten miles east of Oregon was a wye at Flagg Center ( Rochelle is seen in the right background ), where the locomotive was turned for the return trip to Chicago. For the ten miles or so between Flagg Center and Oregon, the trailing combine number 3003, which also served as the regular coach/caboose on the Oregon Way Freight, was coupled next to 4960's smokebox. This resulted in a very crowded vestibule on 3003, with fans literally hanging on. Although the CB&Q had provided a couple of safety officials to control the fans, but they could not get on to the vestibule to shoo us off.

CB&Q E8 9943B
Title:  CB&Q E8 9943B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9943B & O1a 4960 at Aurora, Illinois on June 26, 1965, Koadchrome by Chuck Zeiler. It's a busy moment at the Aurora, Illinois Depot as a freight passes though and Train #10, The Denver Zephyr arrives for its 8:45 AM CST stop. This being summer, it's 9:45 DST locally, and Extra 4960 West waits for the trains to clear the circuit before proceeding on a fantrip to Oregon, Illinois and return. By almost anyone's standards this was an unusual fantrip, the feature of this trip was that it was a working way freight. In addition to the usual baggage car (for tape recording and hanging your head out), open gondola, air-conditioned coaches and snack car, the trip had freight cars to be set out at various industries along the way.

I believe that is the way freight's regular Conductor seen on 99518 leading 4960 in the run around move, and he was none too pleased with the situation and the general pilfering his office ( 3003 ) received from the fans.

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 westbound at Leland, Illinois on December 19, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Obviously not a heavily patronized trip, and this late in the year, there were no open cars, except for the baggage section of the power car. At the end of the train is a private car, the "Captain Hook". This train was billed as the annual Santa Claus trip, leaving Chicago at 9:00Am CST, stopping at LaGrange, Downers Grove, and Aurora, arriving at Zearing at 1:00PM. The feature of this trip was a photo contest judged by a representative of Trains Magazine. The fare was $7.50 for adults. At this time, 4960 was the last operating steam locomotive on the CB&Q, 5632 was in the shops for repairs. Seven months from this date, steam excursions on the CB&Q would be history.

CBQ O-1a 4960
Title:  CBQ O-1a 4960
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad class O-1-A 4960 at Baraboo, Wisconsin on June 29, 1966, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Not a great photo, however, it depicts a situation no one could have predicted. A new management was in place on the CB&Q, and there was no profitability in steam excursions, so 5632 was sold to Dick Jensen, and 4960 was donated to the Circus World Museum in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Its first assignment was to pull a circus train from Baraboo to Milwaukee, and is seen here laying over at the C&NW yard at Baraboo. I drove up from Chicago to Baraboo with Jerry Appleman and Chris Burritt to photograph what we thought was the last run of 4960. We were not alone, there were other railfans present. We shot a lot of photos under existing light, and then someone had the idea to point our automobile headlights at 4960. Here's one of the results of that collective effort. After Wisconsin, 4960 worked in Virginia and Arizona.

Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 eastbound with Schlitz Circus train at Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, June 30, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Soon to be retired from the CB&Q, 4960 was to be donated to the Circus World Museum in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Before the last trip on the Q, 4960 headed to Baraboo to pull the circus train from Baraboo to Milwaukee on the C&NW, seen here doing just that at Cottage Grove.

CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 at Merrimac, Wisconsin on the morning of June 30, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Just a couple of weeks before retirement on the CB&Q, 2-8-2 4960 is seen crossing the Wisconsin River in Merrimac heading the Circus World Museum's vintage circus train toward Milwaukee on the C&NW, a proud moment for this locomotive. The 4960 will return to CB&Q rails after this trip to head a couple more fantrips before returning to Baraboo, Wisconsin, retired from the CB&Q and donated to the museum. Note two railfans in the bushes just above the water line, snapping the exact same photo. I'd like to see their shots. I didn't get to the location fast enough, so I ended up with railfans and bushes in my photo. Somehow, Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee was involved in the sponsorship of this train, and their business car is bring up the markers.

Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 at Denrock, Illinois on July 17, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Sorry, I forgot my butt filter. This was the last CB&Q steam fan trip, from Chicago to Denrock and return. The train was wyed in Denrock and returned to Chicago, and the steam powered fan trip era ended. I counted all my CB&Q 4960 fan trip slides and I shot 267 slides, plus a few dozen more photos in black and white. You won't see all 267 images. Many of the images were sequence shots of photo runbys. Some images only show a plume of smoke and tracks.

CB&Q Denrock Zephyr
Title:  CB&Q Denrock Zephyr
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Denrock Zephyr at Denrock, Illinois on July 17, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The last steam powered fantrip on the CB&Q was this train, unofficially, the Denrock Zephyr. It is seen here backing through the wye at Denrock as Extra 4960 West, and will soon become Extra 4960 East for the return trip to Chicago. This mill gondola, in the 197000 series, was the last car of the train, and was a popular car on this trip. I guess the Q couldn't find a drop end so they fabricated one from wood slats. At the other end was a diamond plate ramp and safety railings welded to the diaphram of the last passenger car, a heavyweight coach. The consist was; one suburban baggage/coach/power car, nine bi-level air-conditioned commuter coaches, a heavyweight diner, a Pullman car (washroom service), one heavyweight coach, and a 65 foot mill gondola in the 197000-197229 series. The trip was powered by 2-8-2 4960, which was donated to the Circus World Museum at Baraboo, Wisconsin after this trip.
