CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-3 2960
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-3 2960
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 Class S-3 2960 on Train #9 at Sand Creek, Colorado on June 11, 1939, photograph by Jackson Thode, Chuck Zeiler collection. I'm hoping that Larkspur is close to Sand Creek, which is how the print is marked. Number 2960 was built by Baldwin in 1915 (c/n 42160) and sold for scrap in July 1952. At some point it acquired a Worthington feedwater heater, it wasn't delivered with one. Fifteen Class S-3 Pacific types were built by Baldwin in 1915 (road #'s 2950-2964) and an additional ten were built in 1918 (road #'s 2965-2974). Additionally, in 1922 two more S-3 design locomotives were built for the FW&DC (road #'s 556-557) and three for the C&S (road #'s 373-375, class F-3C). The C&S also acquired (around 1936) CB&Q 2970, 2973, and 2965, becoming C&S 370, 371, and 372 respectively, classed F-3B. The three Class F-3C locomotives built for the C&S had 69 inch drivers (as opposed to the 74 inch drivers on the CB&Q locomotives), which were better suited to C&S grades and resulted in a tractive force increase from the stock 42,400 lb. to 44,000 lb.. .

CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-3 2961
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-3 2961
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 Class S-3 2961, date, location, and photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. According to the February 1, 1952 CB&Q Locomotive Assignment Sheet, number 2961 was assigned to the Wymore Division. Number 2961 was built by Baldwin in 1915 (c/n 42161) and sold for scrap in December 1952. It appears to have been converted to burn oil, I do not know the date of that conversion.

CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-3 2969

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 Class S-3 2969 at Cameron Junction, Missouri on October 19, 1950, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. This appears to be a mixed train aand my guess is that 2969 was sent to rescue the train after road failure of the locomotive pictured behind the first two box cars. Pacific type 2969 was built by Baldwin in 1918 (c/n 48674) and was sold for scrap in July 1958.

CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-3 2974
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-2 Class S-3 2974
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 Class S-3 2974 at Denver, Colordao on July 23, 1939, photograph by Jackson Thode, Chuck Zeiler collection. This was the final Pacific type delivered by Baldwin to the CB&Q. Number 2974 was built in 1918 (c/n 49075) and sold for scrap in August 1951. Two unsubstantiated observations; it appears to be an oil burner, I don't believe it was delivered that way, and it appears to have an extended smokebox, possibly indicating that it was once a lignite coal burner.

CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4 3000
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4 3000
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4 3000 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on an unknown day in September 1930, photograph by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 3000 was completed during September 1930 (c/n 61445) and sold for scrap in April 1955. The CB&Q ordered 12 4-6-4's, classed S-4, from Baldwin in 1930 (road #'s 3000-3011), and had one additional boiler built in 1935, which was shipped to the Q's West Burlington shops and used in the construction of S-4 3012. As built, the S-4's were equipped with Elesco-type feedwater heaters, operated at a boiler force of pressure of 250 psi, had cylinder dimensions of 25 inches by 28 inches, 78 inch drivers, had a tractive force of 47,700 pounds, and with the trailing truck booster cut in, it was increased to 59,400 pounds.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4 3001 at Barstow, Illinois on August 31, 1958, Kodachrome by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. Obviously on a fantrip, this locomotive was built by Baldwin in 1930 (c/n 61446), one of 12 class S4 4-6-4 types the CB&Q received from Baldwin during that year (#'s 3000-3011). The CB&Q built one more S4 (# 3012) at their West Burlington, Iowa shops in 1935 using a boiler supplied by Baldwin. The Burlington thought highly of the S4's, five out of the 13 were donated to various cities on the system, this one was donated to the City of Ottumwa, Iowa a year after this trip.

CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4 3012
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4 3012
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4 3012 on Train #9, The Aristocrat, at Barr, Colorado on October 15, 1939, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 3012 was assembled by the CB&Q at West Burlington, Iowa (c/n 5356-35), the boiler was supplied by Baldwin, the other components supplied by the same outside manufacturers used by Baldwin. It was completed in July 1935 and was sold for scrap in April 1955. A personal observation, I question if this train was actually The Aristocrat which, as its name suggests, was a much classier train, but that's how the print was marked.

B&MR 2-8-0 Class D-4 3316
Title:  B&MR 2-8-0 Class D-4 3316
Description:  Burlington & Missouri River Railroad 2-8-0 Class D-4 3316 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania sometime in 1903, photograph by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built in 1903 for the Burlington & Missouri River (a subsidiary of the Chicago Burlington & Quincy) as class D-4 number 3316, renumbered in 1904 to CB&Q 3191, retired in June 1927. The B&MR received 2-8-0 class D-4 locomotives from both Baldwin (sub-classed D-4B) and Schenectady (Alco, sub-classed D-4A). A total of 100 D-4's were built, 75 by Alco and 25 by Baldwin, and at the time of their construction, they were the largest and heaviest locomotives on the Burlington system. They employed 12-inch piston steam valves actuated by Stephenson valve gear. The following is from Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin #29, edited by Hol Wagner: There were a number of differences between lcomotives of the two builders, chief among them being the slope of the firebox and style and positioning of the domes (the bell and sandbox being transposed on the two builders versions). The two slightly different firebox designs were both examples of the "kinked" or "broken back" arrangement commonly used in the first years of the 20th Century on early wide firebox locomotives (which also employed two separate firing doors on the backhead). In this arrangement, the rear portion of the mud ring was horizontal, while the front portion sloped downward between the last two pairs of drivers. The downward slope was more pronounced on the Schenectady D-4's than on the Baldwins. The slope had the disadvantage of allowing the fire to slide forward on the sloping grates, gathering at the firebox throat under the fire-brick arch - the point of least fire activity - and choking the lower boiler tubes while leaving a hole in the fire at the point of the kink. Consequently, the Baldwin firebox, with its lesser slope (because it began further to the rear) was a more efficient design.

CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4000 AEOLUS
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4000 AEOLUS
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad c4-6-4 Cass S-4-A 4000, named AEOLUS, at Burlington, Iowa on an unknown date in 1937, photographer unknown, print from Don Gruber, Chuck Zeiler collection. The name AEOLUS is from a Greek god, the Keeper of the Winds. The Burlington had adopted a Greek mythology theme by choosing Zephyr for their trains, the last word in passenger service. Some of you may wonder about the name, and the following is from the Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin 14, AEOLUS, by Hol Wagner:

To the crews that operated and serviced locomotives, the Greek and Roman mythological names adopted by the Burlington seemed quite a mouthful, particularly the names of some of the Twin Cities cars like Psyche, Minerva, and Ceres. But when the first of the steamlined Hudsons was christened AEOLUS in the Spring of 1937, it was just too much. Almost immediately, the crews modified the masculine Greek AEOLUS into the much simplier feminine English ALICE. The name stuck with the common man and was quickly expanded upon.

Back in 1934 a strange apparition had been added to the extremely popular Popeye comic strip: Alice The Goon. As originally drawn, the Goon was an unclothed, hairy monster which uttered utterly incomprehensible noises and was very successful at terrifiying small children. Consequently, Alice The Goon was withdrawn from the strip after a period of public outcry about the character's frightening nature - but not before the term Goon had caught on. Parents admonished their children, 'Be good, or the Goon will get you!' Alice, though frightening to childern, had become quite popular, and she was soon returned to the comic strip in a more acceptable form, clothed in a polka dot blouse and skirt and wearing a hat with a perky flower. Her utterings were still incomprehensible, but she was now much less frightening - so much so that she assumed the role of little Swee' Pea's babysitter. The nickname 'Alice The Goon' and 'Big Alice The Goon' seemed somehow appropriate for the two streamlined locomotives, and for the rest of their shrouded careers they were most commonly known by either of those two monikers, or simply as Alice.

CB&Q Aeolus 4000
Title:  CB&Q Aeolus 4000
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad class S-4-A 4000 named Aeolus, eastbound at Aurora, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1937, photo by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Chuck Zeiler collection. The following is from the Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin 14, AEOLUS: Alice blasts out of the Aurora depot on the last leg of the journey to Chicago with an American Legion special train from Denver in August or September 1937 - Baldwin photo. Not obvious is another train pulling into the station, only the smoke plume at track level in the left background gives it away, but on close inspection it appears to possibly be another section of this train, lead by a conventional S-4.

CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4000
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4000
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4000 at Denver, Colorado on February 26, 1938, photograph by Dick Kindig, Chuck Zeiler collection. The following is from the Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin 14, AEOLUS, by Hol Wagner:

On the evening of February 25, 1938, Aeolus 4000 departed Chicago Union Station with Train No. 1, the Denver Zephyr. Nearly 1,000 miles west, railfan Joe Schick learned that 'Alice' was coming his way from his hometown depot agent/operator in Keenesburg, Colorado on the mainline some 37 miles north-east of Denver. Early the next morning, Schick called fellow railfans Dick Kindig and Otto Perry in Denver to alert them, then headed out west of Keenseburg to capture the 4000 speeding by at 85 mph. By the time Kindig could get down to Denver Union Station on his way to work, No. 1 had already arrived, and Dick captured this view of the locomotive easing off its train and down Track 1 before backing over to the Q's 23rd Street roundhouse for servicing.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4000 at Galesburg, Illinois on July 1, 1956, photographer unknown, print by Don Gruber, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 4000 was built by Baldwin in October 1930 (c/n 61500) as Class S-4 number 3002. It was rebuilt at West Burlington, Iowa to Class S-4-A, entering the shops in late 1936 and completed in April 1937. When completed, the locomotive was shrouded in stainless steel and named Aeolus to serve as standby power for Zephyr trains. The shrouding was removed in 1940-41, revealing the locomotive seen here, donated to LaCrosse, Wisconsin for display on August 19, 1963.

CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4001
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4001
Description:  Some gentlemen appear to be concerned about the running gear on Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4001 at Denver, Colorado on September 10, 1939, photograph by Jackson Thode, Chuck Zeiler collection. This is the second Aeolus (Keeper of the Winds, from Greek mythology), completed in February 1938 by CB&Q's West Burlington Shops. Baldwin supplied the boiler, and Commonwealth supplied the engine and tender beds, cylinders, trailing and tender trucks, and other castings. Construction began in the summer of 1937. The first Aeolus was equipped with an Elesco feedwater heater, but this locomotive was equipped with a Worthington type SA instead, allowing for larger intake vents on either side of the headlight, which also served to mimic the vents on the EMC EA diesels that the two Aeolus locomotives were designed to substitute for in the event of a diesel failure. The 4001 also had a fully enclosed cab, a Commonwealth pilot with retractable coupler, and all three drivers were of the Boxpok type. Number 4001 also featured an anti-climber around the pilot (later added to 4000) and hinged covers that covered the pilot steps, seen here in the open position. The stainless steel shrouds, which presented maintenance difficulties, came off in late 1941 or early 1942 with the delivery of the E5 diesels. This locomotive was retired and sold for scrap in October 1960.

CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4001
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4001
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4001 at Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in December 1952, print by Don Gruber, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 4001 was completed by the CB&Q at West Burlington, Iowa in February 1938 using components supplied by Baldwin and Commonwealth. As built it was shrouded in fluted stainless steel to match the then-new Zephyr trains. The shrouding only lasted a couple of years until the new stainless steel E5's arrived. The shrouding was removed and the 4001 became just another 4-6-4 assigned to various trains as needed. As built it had three Boxpok drivers, but it is shown here with a spoked third driver, likely acquired during shopping. Photos show the spoked driver as early as 1946. Number 4001 was retired and sold for scrap in October 1960.

CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-B 4002
Title:  CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-B 4002
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4-B 4002 at Omaha, Nebraska on an unknown day in October, 1956, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 4002 was completed by Baldwin in December 1930 as CB&Q class S-4 3009 (c/n 61556). During July 1938 it was shopped at West Burlington, Iowa and upgraded to class S-4-A with the application of a new valve gear frame, Boxpok main drivers, lightweight roller bearing rods and roller bearing trailing truck and tender truck journals, and renumbered to 4002 The tender capacity was increased from 24 to 27 tons by raising the sides of the coal bunker by six inches, enabling the locomotive to run straight through the 1,034 miles from Chicago to Denver without stopping for coal. During 1951 it was shopped again and converted to burn oil by dropping a 7,300 gallon fuel oil bunker into the coal compartment and reclassed as S-4-B. It ran until about 1958, when it was stored at Lincoln. It was finally sold for scrap in 1960, the cab and tender were removed (along with the tender of number 4003), it was drawbar-connected back to back with 4003 (which also had its cab removed), and the two locomotives were moved (without the tenders, which were retained for MOW use) in November 1960 to Northwestern Steel and Wire in Sterling, Illinois and scrapped.
