CB&Q NW2 9240
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9240
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9240 at Burlington, Iowa on September 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in August 1946 (c/n 3636) on EMD Order E699 for 28 Phase II NW2's (#'s 9220-9247), it became BN 537 and was retired in May 1983. The identifier for the Phase II NW2's is the factory installed conical exhaust stacks. The Phase I NW2's were delivered with short stacks, which rose only a couple of inches above the top of the hood, and the CB&Q added straight exhaust stacks to their Phase I's.

CB&Q NW2 9244
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9244
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9244 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 7, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in August 1946 (c/n 3640) on EMD Order E699 for 28 NW2's (#'s 9220-9247). It became BN 541 and was retired July 1982. We are looking east at the East End Way Freight as engineer Fred Huntley watches for hand signals to proceed slowly west. The Maintenance of Way crew on the ground will open the doors on the Hart Selective Service hoppers and discharge ballast along this side of Track 1. The less used track to the right leads to Moser Lumber.

Of interest is the Vapor-Clarkson standby heater on the running board in front of the cab. The purpose of this was to allow the prime mover to be shut down in cold weather. The standby heater would heat and circulate the cooling water to prevent freezing. The heater was seldom used, due to the difficulty in restarting the prime mover due to cold batteries and other auxiliaries.

CB&Q NW2 9244
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9244
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9244 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 21, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. It is seen here with Fred Huntley at the throttle on the East End Way Freight backing onto the main line after switching the industries on the north side of Naperville. He will cross all three main line tracks and switch the south side. Then he will proceed east, most likely stopping at Downers Grove to switch the industries there. This train switched all the industries between Eola and Congress Park. Note the device on the running board ahead of the cab. This is a Vapor Standby Heater, the purpose of which was to permit the diesel to be shut down in cold weather. This device would heat and circulate the cooling water through the engine block. Usually it was enclosed in a sheet metal housing on the switchers and GP7's and 9's. It was also applied to the SD7's and 9's, but there was enough room in the rear of the long hood to install it there. In practice, it was seldom used because of the difficulty in restarted the diesel with cold batteries.

CB&Q NW2 9245
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9245
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9245 at Eola, Illinois on January 8, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in August 1946 (c/n 3641) on EMD Order E699. It became BN 542 and was retired by the BN in May 1983. It appears to have acquired a new all-weather cab window recently. There was a roundhouse behind the photographer, who's shadow is pointing toward the rear truck. I posted another photo of this locomotive dated October 11, 1964, and in that photo the Way of the Zephyrs slogan was painted on the hood, suggesting that this locomotive was shopped sometime between the two photo dates.

CB&Q NW2 9248
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9248
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9248 at Oregon, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. Pictured in the cab was the regular Engineer on the Mount Morris turn, Hank Fruit, a long time "owner" of the Oregon job. I recall I was told I could ride the turn to Mount Morris if I got there in time. The only way that could happen would have been for me to stay overnight in Oregon. Unfortunately, I was only 15 at the time, so that was out of the question. I also recall that the waycar used on the turn had been damaged ( rear truck had been shoved forward because of an encounter with end of track bumper ) which would have meant a cab ride. I regret not having done that trip.

CB&Q NW2 9248
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9248
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9248 and crew at Narperville, Illinois, July 8, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This is the East End Way Freight between switching duties. Left to right: Mr. Fred J. Huntley - Engineer; Mr. Riedy (referred to as the College Boy by the crew), - Rear Brakeman, later, Head Brakeman; Mr. John Sylogye - Conductor; Mr. Norm Herrington - Fireman; and unknown - Head Brakeman. I have two stories about the Conductor.

Shortly after this photo was shot, the gentlemen all went about the business of railroading. John however was curious about the spitting sound that the locomotive was making. There is a device on locomotives that separates the water from air when it is compressed, and expels the water automatically causing the spitting sound. John apparently was unfamiliar with that device and must have thought that the drain cock at the bottom of the air tank was not closed completely. He reached under the tank and turned the valve, which he opened by mistake instead, which expelled the water at the bottom of the tank at the full air pressure of around 100 pounds per square inch. The valve happened to be directly over the rail and the expelling water hit the rail and bounced back on John. After he corrected the error, the Engineer looked down from the cab at the soggy Conductor and said, 'Now now, mustn't play with the locomotive boys.'

I was in high school during the years I knew John and the crew of the East End Way Freight. So I only hung around the railroad when I wasn't in school, which is to say on holidays and during the summer. I got familiar enough that I was allowed to do certain chores, one of which was to go to the Kroehler cafeteria and get coffee for the crew. This served several purposes; it got me out of the crew's hair, it made me feel like I was part of the crew, and the crew got free coffee. As it happened, my step-father ran the cafeteria, so I took the crew's thermos bottles and filled them up for free. On occasion, there was no time for my coffee services, so John made coffee in the waycar. I had never had coffee, so when it was offered to me, I felt like I should have some, being an honorary part of the crew. Perhaps it was because it was my first cup, or perhaps it was because that old coffee pot could have used a cleaning, but it was dreadful. Nevertheless, I drank it and made the best smiley face I could as I sat on the bunk in the coal-heated waycar with the crew. But I was more enthusiastic about my coffee services after that.

CB&Q NW2 9248
Title:  CB&Q NW2 9248
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad NW2 9248, running light westbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 13, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is the last NW2 delivered to the CB&Q, built in November 1949 (c/n 8492) on EMD Order E1178, an order for this single locomotive. Interestingly, the very next EMD serial number (c/n 8493) belonged to a SW7, CB&Q 9249, built in May 1950. Number 9248 became BN 545 and was retired in May 1983. Note that it has a standby heater enclosed in a cabinet mounted on the running board ahead of the cab. The purpose of this heater was to allow the prime mover to be shut down in cold weather, and the heater would heat and circulate the engine block cooling water to prevent freezing.

CB&Q SW1200 9273
Title:  CB&Q SW1200 9273
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad SW1200 9273 at Chicago, Illinois on February 24, 1968, photograph by The Garys, print by J. M. Gruber, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 9273 was built September 1955 ( c/n 20545 ), became BN 231, and later BNSF 3503. This shows what was known as a wagon wheel radio antenna, specifically, a Bendix Type MS-101A pre-tuned ground plane antenna connected to the MRT-1A communication unit powered by a MP-44A dynamotor power supply ( located behind the rear exhaust stack ). The dynamotor converted the locomotive's DC power to regulated power ( 13 volts DC tube filament and 325 volts DC plate voltage ) for the MRT-1A.

CB&Q SW1200 9277
Title:  CB&Q SW1200 9277
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad SW1200 9277 at Clyde, Illinois on October 22, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in October 1955 ( c/n 20549 ) on EMD Order 4302, it became BN 235. Of interest to CB&Q fans is that although 9977 is newer, it displays the older ( original ) switcher paint scheme. "Way of the Zephyrs" was painted on the Engineer's side, and "Everywhere West" was painted on the other ( Fireman's ) side. As best I can determine. the loco behind is NW2 9212, based on close examination of the slide (the last number appears to be a 2), and the straight stacks, applied to the early NW2's. It sports the newer CB&Q switcher paint scheme.

CB&Q S2 9300
Title:  CB&Q S2 9300
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Alco S2 9300 at Schenectady, New York, April 1943. This is obviously a builder's photo. It shows the first Alco delivered to the CB&Q, c/n 70271. There are plaques attached to the rails, below the rear truck is the date, April 1943, and below the front truck is the order number, S1885. It was one of nine Alco S2's delivered to the CB&Q during World War II. Delivered in three groups, the first two were assigned to service around the Chicago area, bumped from Chicago assignments by the Baldwin VO-1000's. The Alco's eventually were distributed around the system, finally, all were based in Denver until retired in the late 1960's.

CB&Q S2 9302
Title:  CB&Q S2 9302
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad S2 9302 with shutters closed at Denver Union Station on August 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built on Order S1915 for the Bingham & Garfield, diverted to the CB&Q by the War Production Board. The Burlington Northern anticipated using these locomotives and allotted road numbers 925-933, but they were traded to GE before the merger was consumated. The intended number series remained vacant. Although GE accepted the S2's as trade-in credit on nine U23C's, the switchers were sent directly to Precision Engineering Co., of Mount Vernon, Illinois, where all but one were scrapped and the usable parts stockpiled.

CB&Q S2 9307
Title:  CB&Q S2 9307
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad S2 9307 at Denver Union Station on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1944 (c/n 69871) and was retired in October 1969 and traded to GE for new power. However, GE sold this locomotive and all rest of CB&Q's Alco S2's to Precision National Corp, and the Alcos were shipped to Mt. Vernon, Illinois, and with the exception of #9300 all were scrapped and the usable parts stockpiled. It is seen here about to back down to couple to the rear of the CB&Q's Denver Zephyr (DZ) and add the Colorado Springs connection cars to the train. I was fortunate to ride the DZ in the summer of 1964. The connection to Colorado Springs consisted of a Vista-Dome chair car, a 10-6 Pullman sleeper, a Slumbercoach and a "Chuck Wagon" Vista-Dome buffet-lounge, and on this particular day, a borrowed GN coach. These cars were hauled from Denver to Colorado Springs and return on the D&RGW's Royal Gorge. Upon return to Denver, the CB&Q's station switcher would disassemble the waiting DZ, take the rear cars over to the track the Royal Gorge was on, couple to the rear cars of the Royal Gorge (the Colorado Springs connection cars), and reassemble the DZ for the trip to Chicago. This gave me the opportunity to jump off and snap a couple of photos.

CB&Q S2 9307
Title:  CB&Q S2 9307
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Alco S-2 9307 at Denver Union Station on August 20, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built March 1944 (c/n 69871) on order S1889, it was retired October 1969 and scrapped. It is pictured assembling the eastbound Denver Zephyr. I happened to be a passenger on the Colorado Springs connection of this train. Upon arrival of the connection from Colorado Springs, the cars were switched into the waiting DZ, and the train re-assembled for its overnight run to Chicago, thus allowing me time to get off and snap this photo. The following is excerpted from the Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin #2, edited by F. Hol Wagner: At the start of World War II, the three major U.S. manufacturers of diesel locomotives offered or were preparing to offer a full line of motive power - passenger, freight and switching. In 1942 however, the War Production Board's Transportation Equipment Branch assumed control over the country's production facilities and soon decided that production of passenger locomotives should be suspended for the duration of the war. The WPB's General Limitation Order No. 97 (adopted April 4, 1942) further ordered Electro-Motive Division to halt switcher production and to concentrate on manufacture of its proven freight locomotive, the FT. Both Alco and Baldwin were restricted to the manufacture of all of the switchers (the restriction was to 1000 or less horsepower locomotives) needed by America's railroads, and production of road freight power in Schenectady and Eddystone was suspended until 1945. So it was when the Q found itself in dire need of additional switching power in 1942, the road turned not to EMD, from which it had received 43 switchers (both 600 and 1000 horsepower designs) since 1937, but instead to the WPB. The Washington bureaucrats cared not about standardization, minimization of parts inventory, or operating characteristics; they simply doled out switchers to railroads as the units were turned out by Alco and Baldwin. Of the 39 switchers alloted to the Q during the war, 30 were built by Baldwin, with the remaining nine coming from Alco. The Alco S-2's were numbered 9300-9308 and were equipped with the Model 539 inline six-cylinder turbocharged 1000 horsepower prime mover. They rode on Alco's unique Blunt trucks and featured General Electric electrical components, which accounts for their billing as "Alco-GE" products. Delivered in three orders, the first two S-2's (built on order S1885) arrived in April 1943, and were assigned to service in and around Chicago. Units 9302-9305 (built on order S1915) arrived in December 1943, and were placed in service at Lincoln. The final units of the group, 9306-9308 (built on order S1889), came in March 1944. Number 9306 joined its four sisters at Lincoln, while 9307-9308 were assigned to Chicago. In November 1944, all the Chicago units except 9308 moved west to Lincoln, replaced in the Windy City by new Baldwin VO-1000's. And so the situation remained until after the war. In 1948, when EMD switchers were once again being delivered, all the S-2's moved further west. Units 9302 and 9306 took up residence in Alliance, and the other seven went to Denver, where they would remain for the rest of their careers on the Q. The two units in Alliance moved to Denver in 1958, and for the first time, all nine S-2's were assigned to the same location, much to the relief of the Stores Department. Considerably lighter than their Baldwin and EMD counterparts (231,890 lbs., versus 241,620 lbs. for a VO-1000, and 249,900 lbs. for a pre-war NW-2), the 9300's were still popular with engine crews and moved their share of tonnage in the yards and industrial districts of both Lines East and Lines West. They were also frequently used as passenger switchers. Twenty Five years is the most commonly cited figure for the economic lifespan of a diesel switcher, and so it was with the 9300's. They were all retired in 1969.

CB&Q VO-1000 9350
Title:  CB&Q VO-1000 9350
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Baldwin VO-1000 9350 at Kansas City, Missouri on January 31, 1965, Kodachrome by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. This was the first of 30 VO-1000's delivered to the CB&Q during World War II. This one was built in October 1943 (c/n 69778) and traded to GE for new power during March 1967. It was sold to the ACL and went on to a second career, finally retired in 1977-78. Baldwin switchers would not have been the first choice of the CB&Q, but it was not the railroad's decision, rather the War Production Board (WPB) allocated locomotives during the war based on need, and the Burlington was in need of switchers. The WPB allocated a total of 39 diesel switchers to the Q, nine were Alco S2's, and 30 were Baldwin VO-1000's. As built, the VO-1000 had a single exhaust stack located toward the cab end offset to the left, but this proved to be restrictive, and heat would build up in the carbody, causing overheating of the main generator. The exhaust manifold was redesigned a couple of times by Baldwin, finally settling on a four stack design. This design was retro-fitted to several of the CB&Q's VO-1000's.

CB&Q VO-1000 9352
Title:  CB&Q VO-1000 9352
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Baldwin VO-1000 9352 (c/n 70103) presumed at the Baldwin Eddystone, Pennsylvania plant around November 1943, print by H. L. Broadbelt, Chuck Zeiler collection. The CB&Q received a total of 30 VO-1000's from Baldwin, not by choice, but as doled out by the War Production Board during World War II. The CB&Q would have preferred EMD switchers, but EMD was restricted to producing the FT model road diesel and Model 567 diesel power plants for submarines. The VO-1000's were assigned the 9350-9379 number series. They were powered by a De La Vergne four-cycle eight-cylinder in-line diesel prime mover coupled to Westinghouse electrical gear, producing 1000 horsepower, or 60,405 pounds of tractive effort. It was found that the single exhaust stack tended to create back pressure, and as a result, tended to overheat. The CB&Q (and other railroads) solved this problem by installing four stacks on many of its VO-1000's, resulting in a noisier locomotive. Some railroads went so far as to add eight exhaust stacks, a practice Baldwin called, "hot-rodding".

Number 9352 was retired May 1966, likely traded for new power. When approved by the War Production Board, the CB&Q received a total of 30 VO-1000's from Baldwin spanning eight orders, so the serial (construction) numbers were not consecutive, and were assigned the 9350-9379 number series. They were powered by a De La Vergne four-cycle eight-cylinder in-line diesel prime mover coupled to Westinghouse electrical gear, producing 1000 horsepower, or 60,405 pounds of tractive effort. They featured an infinite "air throttle" or electro-pneumatic throttle system as Baldwin preferred to call it. An air valve controlled a resistor which in turn controlled the exciter and generator fields. This produced a "soft start", meaning that even if the throttle was yanked back, the air valve would slowly adjust the resistor to allow the fields to build up. The VO-1000's were concentrated in the Chicago and North Kansas City areas for most of their service life on the CB&Q.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Baldwin VO-1000 9352 presumed at Eddystone, Pennsylvania sometime in November 1943, print by H. L. Broadbelt, Chuck Zeiler collection. Delivered to the CB&Q around November 1943 (c/n 70103), this was one of 30 VO-1000's the Burlington was allotted by the War Production Board during World War II. It was retired in May 1966. Introduced in 1939, a total of 548 VO-1000's were produced until this model was superseded by the DS-4-4-1000 in 1946. During 1945 Baldwin made several changes to the VO exhaust system design. Originally, the VO's had a single stack, offset to the left in front of the cab. During the first half of 1945, this was changed to two stacks, and later it became four stacks; equally spaced on the VO-1000 and grouped in pairs on the VO-660. In service it had been found that the single stack created excessive heat around the main generator. The two-stack design cured that problem, but heat expansion caused cracks in the exhaust manifold. The four-stack design cured the cracking problem.
