MILW E7 19B
Title:  MILW E7 19B
Description:  Milwaukee Road E7 19B on the north side of Union Station in Chicago, Illinois on February 27, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in June 1946 (c/n 3242), classed as 20-EP on the Milwaukee Road, and traded to EMD for new power in late 1968 or early 1969. Photos of trains at this location would not heve been possible a year earlier or a year after this photo date. Previously the tracks and platforms were covered with a trainshed completed in 1925. The shed was in the process of being removed to allow construction of glass and steel high rise office buildings to be built on the air rights over the tracks.

MILW E7 19B
Title:  MILW E7 19B
Description:  Milwaukee Road E7 19B at Union Staion in Chicago, Illinois on February 27, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1946 (c/n 3242) on EMD Order E664A, MILW class 20-EP, it was traded to EMD for new power in 1968. It is seen here in charge of the daily un-named Train #23, departing Chicago at 3:20PM CST, arriving in Milwaukee at 4:45PM, making only one stop enroute at Glenview. This view also shows the preliminary demolition of the concourse of Union Station to make room for glass and steel office buildings on the air rights over the tracks. The first step was to remove the north side train sheds over the Milwaukee Road tracks, the only tenant on the north side of Union Station. This exposed waiting Milwaukee Road trains to both the elements and daylight for the first time since the station was completed in 1925.

GM&O E7 102
Title:  GM&O E7 102
Description:  Gulf Mobile & Ohio Railroad E7 102 southbound on The Limited at Joliet, Illinois on July 11, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built as Alton 102 in March 1945 (c/n 2003) on EMD Order E544A, it was one of four E7's built for the Alton on that shop order (No.'s 102, 102A, 103, 103A). This unit was wrecked at Ocuya, Illinois in August 1971 and scrapped at Jackson, Mississippi. It is seen here at the head of Train No. 1, The Limited, due in Joliet at 11:55 AM CDT, and this being Daylight Saving Time, it's almost 1:00 PM. According to the June 1965 Official Guide, 'All through Gulf Mobile & Ohio trains are air-conditioned and diesel-electric powered. All parlor lounge cars Trains 1-2-3 and 4 are owned and operated by the GM&O RR.'

Title:  GM&O E7 102
Description:  Gulf Mobile & Ohio Railroad E7 102 on Train No. 1, The Limited, at Joliet, Illinois on July 11, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built as Alton E7 102 (c/n 2003), wrecked and retired in August 1971. It is seen here bringing GM&O's daily Train No, 1, The Limited, to its first stop out of Union Station in Chicago. It's due at Joliet (according to the June 1965 Official Guide) at 11:55 AM CST, so it's almost 1:00 PM Daylight Savings Time, when I snapped this photo. If on time, it will arrive at it's final stop, Saint Louis, Missouri at 4:43 CST, 283.9 miles from its starting point. This train was equipped with a Parlor Car (with Drawing room), Dining-Lounge car and reclining seat coaches. Also listed on the GM&O page in the Official Guide was a connection with MP Train No. 1, The Texas Eagle, which offered a connection to Little Rock, Arkansas, departing Saint Louis at 5:30 PM and arriving at Little Rock at 11:55 PM.

GM&O E7 102
Title:  GM&O E7 102
Description:  GM&O E7 102 at Saint Louis Union Station, Saint Louis, Missouri on August 14, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1945 (c/n 2003) as Alton E7 102 and became GM&O 102 after the 1947 merger. It was wrecked in August 1971 and scrapped. This is an example of a railroad modification to the EMD design air ventilation to the engine room. As built, there were unfiltered louvers behind the cab door above the letter G, plated over by the GM&O. In place of the louvers, the railroad cut three filtered openings above the word MOBILE in the car body to allow intake of combustion air. There is also an extra air intake grill at the top rear of the car body, not seen on the trailing E7. This was sometimes applied by railroads (also seen on CB&Q E7's) to allow intake of makeup air for the steam generators.

By the date of this photo, the Rock Island no longer operated trains, the commuter operations had been taken over by the Regional Transit Authority, which replaced these E units with F40PH's, and the freigh‹ operations were operated by the Kansas City Terminal, as directed by the ICC. The locomotive on the left, number 652, still in Bicentennial vaint, survived.

Title:  CRI&P RS2m 451
Description:  CRI&P E7 640 and RS2m 451 at Blue Island, Illinois, October 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The E7 was built in February 1948 (c/n 3736) on EMD Order E712. The RS2m was built as an ALco RS2 during September 1948 (c/n 75953), and was sent to EMD in September 1957 for replacement of its Alco Model 244B prime mover with an EMD Model 567C. Although the 567C was capable of producing 1750 horsepower, it was rated at 1500 in this application, likely because of the reuse of the GE Model 752 traction motors. I do not know if the GE GT564C main generator was reused or if EMD's D12B was installed. The locomotive retained its as-built long hood forward configuration after the rebuilding.

CRI&P E7 641
Title:  CRI&P E7 641
Description:  CRI&P E7 641 at Roosevelt Road in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in July 1978, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. A question came up about those half tube shaped items just in front of and behind the four exhaust stacks of each prime mover. A modeling web site called them exhaust smoke lifters. The same site (address below) says the railroad modified the radiators, explaining the unusual radiator configuration seen here. Anyone know anything about this please leave a comment.

Description:  Seaboard#Air Line Railroad E7 3041 at Miami, Florida on an unknown day in November 1964, Kodachrome by Keith E. Ardinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. Title:  NYC E7 4011
Description:  NYC E7 4011 at LaSalle Street Station, Chicago, Illinois, October 31, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in April 1947 (c/n 4166) on EMD Order E751A, and became PC 4011. Given the long shadows, according to the June 1965 issue of the Official Guide, this train could be either: Train #28, the New England States, or Train #2, The Pacemaker, (both were scheduled to leave LaSalle Street at 3:00 PM CST), or perhaps Train #26, the Twentieth Century Limited, scheduled to leave at 3:30 PM CST, or Train #304, The James Whitcomb Riley, scheduled to leave at 4:00 PM CST, or Train #356, The Twilight Limited, scheduled to leave at 4:15 CST. I failed to note which train on the slide.

IC E7 4017
Title:  IC E7 4017
Description:  IC E7 4017 at about 22nd Street in Chicago, Illinois on October 14, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1948 (c/n 5150) on EMD Order E873, it is seen here on the south lead of Central Station on the "jumpover" embankment crossing over the IC's Electric Division's suburban tracks. The numberboards are unusual for and E7, which are flush, unlike the box-type numberboards characteristic of production E7's. I have seen another photo of #4017 on this site, showing the box numberboards, so perhaps this is a wreck rebuild, I don't know for sure. It was retired in March 1971 and scrapped.

CB&Q E7 9916B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9916B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9916B leading Train #11, the Nebraska Zephyr, westbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 19, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. For a few years (1962-66) I lived next to the CB&Q, and I recall Train #11 storming across the grade crossing at Loomis Street, and I had occasion to photograph the event. Number 11 appears less than attractive, with all the heavyweight cars up front, but the rear of this train is a stainless steel five car articulated trainset from the second Twin Cities Zephyr set. It was originally a seven car articulated set, but was reduced to five cars in Nebraska Zephyr service. Number 9916B was built November 13, 1945 (c/n 2939) on EMD order E646, retired and sold for scrap in May 1968. It was among the first order for E7's by the CB&Q, and had a retractable front coupler and buffer, and in the retracted position, the opening was closed over by a pair of doors. The coupler was extended/retracted by a hydro-pneumatic system that included side lock keys and a whistle that sounded continuously if the keys were not in the locked position. After a few years, the front coupler was permanently left in the extended position.

CB&Q E7 9917B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9917B
Description:  CB&Q E-7 9917B eastbound at Loomis Street in Naperville, Illinois on October 10, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was wrecked at south Council Bluffs, Iowa on October 15, 1966, I have no further information. This locomotive displays mis-matched MU plug covers. Looking at the triangular shapes that are painted on either side of the upper headlight, you will notice that the one on the engineer's side has a black striped middle section. This is probably a replacement cover removed from a locomotive painted in the as-delivered black Whisker paint scheme. When delivered, the E series locomotives were painted with black where the red is, on the front. The Burlington Route logo below the lower headlight was as you see it here, and the side stripes were red. It also displays lower than usual E-7 stainless steel model plates, seen here below the sand filler on the cab, but usually located above the sand filler. Trailing the 9917B is another E-7 from the second phase design from Electro-Motive, a SD-24 and a GP-20. All the locomotives are facing forward, or running elephant style, a Burlington preference, which I have yet to determine a reason for. It was unusual for the CB&Q to mix its freight and passenger motive power.

Here's a little CB&Q trivia: the reason for those triangular shapes painted on either side of the upper headlight was to mimic the air intakes of the original Pioneer Zephyr design. All CB&Q E units wore that design. Around the time of the Burlington Northern merger, it was dropped. Although it looks like a freight train, I believe it belongs in the passenger train category. It appears in the CB&Q Chicago & Aurora Divisions Employees Timetable #11, effective Sunday October 31, 1965, as a first class train. Also published by the Burlington Route Historical Society in Zephyr #53 was a re-print of Timetable #10, which had the same listing. Due out of Aurora at 1:29 AM, it has two scheduled stops between Aurora and Chicago: Congress Park at 2:15 AM, and Cicero at 2:25 AM, before its arrival in Chicago at 3:25 AM. Note that the schedule was a little padded to cover setouts at Congress Park (Meat) and Cicero (Trailer On Flat Car - TOFC).

I contacted Ed DeRouin of Pixels Publishing (he has written or published several articles and books with CB&Q content) to figure out what I had photographed, and here's his answer: You photographed a late running Number 14, which was a Lincoln - Chicago train scheduled to move express, later meat and packing house products in reefers and TOFC, with a 3:25 a.m arrival in Chicago. Engineers I spoke with decades ago shared that often the last cars were set out at Cicero and the motors ran light to 14th Street. This train carried no passengers. Although some storage mail was moved via 14, no RPO was operated. Since most mail and express was westbound, this train was also used to bring empty storage cars east.

It looks like they're smoking it up, and I'll bet they are. About 12 miles behind, Number 14 dropped down to about 20 mph to weave through the Aurora Depot and pass through downtown Aurora on elevated track, then at restricted speed to Eola Yard, then throttle up a bit, there's a grade crossing at East Eola, another a couple miles down at River Road, one more, at Loomis Street (just behind me in this photo), then ten miles or so of no grade crossings. There was a lot of fast running between Naperville and Downers Grove, so my guess, he's in Run 8. One can only imagine the consternation of the Dispatcher finding this train in his morning rush hour lineup. Number 14 is on the middle track of a three track main and will have to cross over in front of suburban rush hour trains to do the setout at Congress Park. Bad plan probably, and if it were me, I guess I'd get it off the railroad as fast as I could; run it into Cicero yard, then send a switcher back with the Congress Park setout, about a five mile reverse move.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9918A westbound on Train Number 23, the Afternoon Zephyr, also known as the Second Twin Cities Zephyr, at Naperville, Illinois on July 3, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. As you can see, I was learning to pan with the train, resulting in a clear locomotive front, but a blurred train. I'll fix that in later photos, but unfortunate on this photo date. Three locomotives on the Twin meant extra cars were in the consist.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9919A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on February 13, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9919A was built in November 1945 (c/n 2944) on EMD Order E646, and was retired and sold for scrap in August 1968 to Precision Engineering. It was delivered semi-permanently coupled to 9919B and ran in that configuration until the late-1950's, when nose MU connections were added. It is seen here heading Train Number 11, the Nebraska Zephyr, the daily mail train between Chicago and Lincoln, Nebraska.

CB&Q E7 9920A
Title:  CB&Q E7 9920A
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9920A at the Eola Reclamation Plant on October 11, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is the cab and first prime mover roof section of CB&Q E7 9920A (built in November 1945, c/n 2946), the lead locomotive of CB&Q Train Number 3, which struck a standing detouring Rock Island train at Mongomery, Illinois on September 27, 1964. The following is part of the ICC accident report:

The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (CRI&P) is connected to the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad (CB&Q) at Ottawa, Ill., which is on the Streator Branch 41 miles west of Montgomery. A few days before the accident, CRI&P trains started detouring over the CB&Q tracks between Ottawa and Chicago because of a defective CRI&P bridge over the Des Plaines River at Joliet, Ill. Some time before 8:45 p.m. on the day of the accident, CRI&P passenger trains No.4 and No. 10 were combined at Ottawa to detour eastward over the CB&Q to Chicago, via Montgomery interlocking. This combined train, consisting of six CRI&P diesel-electric units and 19 cars, operated on the CB&Q as Extra RI 656 East. It left Ottawa at 8:45 p.m. with a CRI&P engine crew, a CB&Q engineer-pilot, and a CB&Q road foreman of engines in the control compartment at the front of the locomotive. A CB&Q conductor-pilot and a CRI&P train crew were at various locations in the cars.

Approximately 2 hours after leaving Ottawa, Extra RI 656 East arrived at Montgomery interlocking, where it stopped on the Streator Branch main track with the front end 675 feet west of switch 14 and 195 feet west of signal 24-23, which indicated Stop. About the same time, the men on the locomotive saw a detouring westbound CRI&P passenger train, Extra RI 634 West, stopped on track No. 1 east of the interlocking station. A few minutes later, they saw the headlight of No.3, a west-bound CB&Q passenger train, approaching on track No.2 and surmised that their train would be routed eastward on track No.2 after No. 3 passed. While Extra RI 656 East was waiting for No.3 to pass, a warning device sounded in the control compartment of the first diesel-electric unit and the CRI&P fireman went into the engine room of this unit to determine why the warning device had sounded. Immediately after the fireman left the control compartment, the CB&Q road foreman of engines noticed No.3 had been diverted to the Streator Branch main track at switch 14 and was closely approaching at high speed. He promptly called a warning to the CRI&P and CB&Q engineers and ran to a side door of the control compartment, where he started to jump from the locomotive. Before he could jump, however, No.3 struck the front end of Extra RI 656 East, killing the CRI&P engineer and the CB&Q engineer-pilot. The CB&Q road foreman of engines and the CRI&P fireman were injured.

Number 3, a westbound first-class passenger train, consisting of 3 diesel-electric units and 15 cars, left Aurora at 10:45 p.m., 3 minutes late, and proceeded westward on track No.2. A few minutes later, it approached Montgomery interlocking at 63 miles per hour, as indicated by the speed recording tape. The engineer and fireman were in the control compartment at the front of the locomotive, and the other crew members were at various locations in the cars. Signal 5-3 indicated Proceed as the train approached Montgomery interlocking, and this indicated to the enginemen that the route was lined for movement of No.3 through the interlocking on track No.2. The route, however was improperly lined for movement of No.3 from track No.2 to the Streator Branch main track, via switch 14. The engineer apparently first became aware of this when the train reached the area of the interlocking station at which time he initiated an emergency brake application. A few moments later, the train passed the interlocking station, entered the Streator Branch main track at switch 14 and, while moving at 52 miles per hour, struck the front end of Extra RI 656 East.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9920B on the westbound Train #11, The Nebraska Zephyr, at Congress Park, Illinois on June 22, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in November 1945 (c/n 2947) and traded in to GE for credit on a U30B in March 1968. Not a pretty Zephyr, it held the mail contract between Chicago and Lincoln, Nebraska, so most of the train was made of mail storage cars. The passenger accommodations at the rear was generally a five car articulated trainset from the Second Twin Cities Zephyr.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9922B heading Train Number 11, the Nebraska Zephyr, at Galva, Illinois on October 12, 1956, photograph by P. Stringham, print by William A. Raia, Chuck Zeiler collection. Behind the baggage car is the seven car articulated trainset (one of two such trainsets) from the second Twin Cities Zephyr (TCZ), removed from TCZ service in late 1947 and refurbished at Aurora for Nebraska Zephyr service. Included in the refurbish work was the raising of the floors in the cars 2½ inches. As built the windows were located higher than usual because at the time it was believed that passengers would feel discomfort from observing the train moving at the high speeds attained by the TCZ. The high windows permitted view of the scenery while resticting the view of the ground. The fear of discomfort proved unfounded and, if fact, passengers complained about the resticted view. Gentle ramps were installed for transition from the raised floor to the vestibules. One of the TCZ trainsets is at the Illinois Railway Museum (reduced to a five car set around 1965) and the other set is rumored to be in Saudi Arabia. The locomotive was completed by EMD November 24, 1946 (c/n 2951) and wrecked at Montgomery, Illinois on September 27, 1964. It was scrapped soon after.

This locomotive was built in November 1945 (c/n 2955) on EMD Order E646A and was sold for scrap in February 1968. I marked the slide as the North Coast Limited (NCL). I believe that is in error. I've consulted the June 1965 copy of the Official Guide, which states that Train# 26, the NCL was due at Aurora (10 miles west from this point) at 1:15 PM, and it it early morning judging by the lighting, and the headight in the left background, which would be the East End Way Freight, also a morning train in Naperville. However, the Mainstreeter, Train #48, was due at Aurora at 5:45 AM, and if it was running late, it would fit into this photo quite well. Either way, there was Northern Pacific passenger equipment in this train.

CB&Q E7 9924B
Title:  CB&Q E7 9924B
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E7 9924B eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on June 12, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in November 1945 (c/n 2955), sold for scrap in February 1968, it is seen here on an eastbound Dinky. I shot this same locomotive the previous day (Friday) heading east on a passenger train from the Twin Cities. That being the case, I surmise that 9924B was serviced, turned, and sent out to Aurora on a Dinky (commuter train). June 12 was a Saturday, and the Burlington would run its E units back to Chicago during the weekend lull. They would be serviced and rotated into Zephyr service and the E's that were in Zephyr service would be assigned to suburban service. Generally, on Friday evening, the extra E's in Aurora would be ganged up (4-5 per train) on a single car Dinky for the return to Chicago, but sometimes on Saturday there would be a few stragglers left to send back, as seen here. This locomotive was among the first group of E7's acquired by the CB&Q, and were the "Phase 1" design with small numberboards and retractable front couplers. Part of the retractable coupler mechanizm included the buffer plate, the item above the coupler allowing footing when walking between coupled locomotives. There was air-operated apparatus in the nose of the early E7's that extended the coupler and buffer plate, or retracted same, as needed. It soon became apparent that simply leaving the coupler and buffer plate in the extended position simplified maintenance.
