Description:  American Freedom Train 1 somewhere on the south side of Chicago, Illinois on July 27, 1975, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. That's my friend Chris Burritt rolling 16mm film as the AFT makes its way into Chicago for display. Alas, Chris passed away in 2008, and I do not know what happened to his film.

Title:  AFT American Freedom Train 1
Description:  American Freedom Train 1 at about Lake Street and Cicero Avenue in Chicago, Illinois on July 27, 1975, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The AFT was routed over the Belt Railway of Chicago to get from the ICG to the C&NW. It is seen here passing under the CTA's Lake Street elevated and is almost at the C&NW's 40th Street yard. The cutoff at the left is the result of my pushing a 36 exposure roll of film to 37. You know I prayed for a CTA train to pass over during this.

AFT 1
Title:  AFT 1
Description:  On July 27, 1975 The American Freedom Train had just arrived in the Chicago area. Upon arrival, it was first wyed (over greased rails at one point) and then hauled to Navy Pier for a few days of exhibition. This photo shows the train after it was turned but before being moved to Navy Pier. At this point the train was awaiting a C&NW switch engine to haul the train backward to Navy Pier. Due to light rails and clearance restrictions, the locomotive was left behind. As I understand it, the locomotive was moved somewhere near the Merchandise Mart for viewing.

Due to clearance issues, light rails, and condition of the track, the locomotive was left at Clinton Street for display while the rest of the American Freedom Train was displayed at Navy Pier, about a half mile behind this location.

The AFT arrived in Chicago on July 27 and was put on display at Navy Pier. On August 4, the train was pulled from Navy Pier to Proviso, and the locomotives were exchanged in a brief ceremony. They were fitted with Elesco feedwater heaters. More 4-8-4's were built by the CB&Q using Baldwin boilers (#'s 5608-5635) and the home-built locomotives were fitted with Worthington feedwater heaters. Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5 5602, date, location, and photographer unknown, print by Don Gruber, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5602 was built by Baldwin in September 1930 (c/n 61496) and sold for scrap in June 1960. Although the date and location are unknown, my best guess would around Galesburg (the assigned division) and around 1949, based on the solid pilot wheels (it was delivered with spoked pilot wheels) and lack of Mars light, installed in the 1950's.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 ClaChicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5 5605 on September 30, 1953, location and photographer unknown, print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5605 was built by Baldwin in September 1930 (c/n 61499) and sold for scrap in September 1960. The following information is from Bob Campbell:

Picture was taken at First Avenue, Mendota, IL approximately MP 82.1, just west of the coal chute. 5605 is facing east on the westward main and it appears that it is about to either pick-up or set-out in the North Yard. 5605 appears to be on a regularly scheduled eastbound train as there are no white flags displayed. Obviously, they cut their train off west of First Avenue on the eastward main and ran east of the Mendota interlocking plant (not IC Tower, in town), then backed thru the cross over to do the work in the North Yard. I believe at the time of the photo, 5605 is still rolling backwards, as the head brakeman is still hanging off the rear of the tender and the "old geezer" has started to cross the tracks. There are five people in the photo, most of whom appear to be employees. 5605 looks great with Mars light, cab signals and bell ringing (too bad it's a visor-less headlight!).ss O-5 5605 on September 30, 1953, location and photographer unknown, print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5605 was built by Baldwin in September 1930 (c/n 61499) and sold for scrap in September 1960. My best guess on the location would be Galesburg, Illinois.

I liked this shot better.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5 5607 presumed at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on an unknown day in October 1930, photograph by Baldwin Locomotive Works, print by H. Number 5607 MAY have been the last complete locomotive delivered to the CB&Q by Baldwin, as well as the last new locomotive delivered with the Elesco Feedwater system. Subsequent 4-8-4's were built by the CB&Q from components supplied by various manufacturers (the boilers were supplied by Baldwin) and were equipped with the Worthington Feedwater system.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5608 on a stock extra, date, location, and photographer unknown, print by Martin Brady, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5608 was built by the CB&Q using components supplied by various manufacturers (the boiler was by Baldwin), completed at West Burlington, Iowa in September 1936, retired in May 1961. While not a good photo, it shows the locomotive in as-built configuration with spoked pilot wheels and drivers. The CB&Q Locomotive Assignment Sheet dated March 1, 1940 shows 5608 assigned to the Chicago Division.

CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5609
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5609
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5609 at Clyde, Illinois on February 11, 1951, photographer unknown, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5609 was assembled by the CB&Q at West Burlington, Iowa, completed in September 1936, sold for scrap in May 1961. The boiler was supplied by Baldwin, and there appears to be a Baldwin builders plate attached in the usual place on the smokebox. I have not yet found the construction (serail) number applied to the boiler. It was one of 13 Class O-5-A's assembled by the Burlington, road numbers 5608-5620. All the Class O-5-A's were equipped with a Worthington Type SA Feedwater Heater, with the hot water pump located under the smokebox and behind a shield, and the cold water pump located below the cab on the Engineer's side.

Number 5610 was assembled by the CB&Q at West Burlington, Iowa, completed in October 1936, sold for scrap in April 1961. CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5611
Title:  CB&Q 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5611
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-8-4 Class O-5-A 5611, date, location, and photographer unknown, print by Don Gruber, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5611 was assembled by the CB&Q at West Burlington, Iowa, completed in June 1937, sold for scrap in October 1953. Baldwin supplied the boiler, various other manufacturers supplied the other components, and it was equipped with a Worthington Type SA Feedwater Heater. Based on CB&Q Locomotive Assignment Sheets dated between 1940 and 1952, showing 5611 assigned to the Chicago Division, the location is guessed to be the Chicago area, and the locomotive is equipped with spoked pilot wheels, so I'm guessing around 1940. Most, if not all, of the Class O-5-A's had their pilot wheels replaced upon shopping for Class 1 repairs, around 10 years or so after building.

It was retired in May 1960.
