CB&Q Pullman 676
Title:  CB&Q Pullman 676
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Pullman 676, named Happy Hollow Club, at Aurora, Illinois on June 20, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built by Pullman in December 1929, it was named the Happy Hollow Club. It is listed in the book, "Burlington Passenger Car Roster", by William Glick, as a Pullman Type 1-2-2-2. Jerry LaBoda adds the following in his comment: "The car's not a 1-2-2-2, its a 4 single bedroom - 2 compartment - 1 drawing room - lounge, Pullman plan 3995". It was purchased from Pullman in 1949 and scrapped at Eola, Illinois December 31, 1965. There was a Happy Hollow Club established in Omaha, Nebraska in 1907. I do not know if the car is named for that club. UPDATE - here's some more information from the book, "CB&Q Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment", by Michael J. Spoor: "Built by Pullman in December 1929 to Plan 3995, Lot 6301, and subsequently rebuilt in February 1938, Happy Hollow Club and sister Lancaster Club featured 2 single bedrooms, 2 double bedrooms, 2 compartments, 1 drawing room, and 17 lounge seats. Purchased from Pullman in 1949, Lancaster Club was given #677 making it the highest numbered heavyweight sleeper on the roster. During the 1960's, it served as a substitute dormitory car on the Denver Zephyr."

CB&Q Cab-Control 790
Title:  CB&Q Cab-Control 790
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Budd Cab Car 790, eastbound at Congress Park, Illinois on June 11, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. I believe this to be the first revenue run of a Budd Cab-Control car on the CB&Q. This car was received by the CB&Q during May-June 1965, the first of six such cab-equipped bi-level commuter coaches on the Burlington. It was built by Budd (Job 9655-370), had 139 seats and a toilet. I was living in Naperville when I heard a Dinky (commuter train) leave the Naperville station, but the clickity-clack preceded the sound of dual 567's, which caught my attention. I saw this train and immediatly grabbed my camera and jumped into my '56 Chevy and headed for Downers Grove. The train departed the Downers Grove station as I arrived, so I continued on to Clarendon Hills, missed it there, and at Hinsdale, so I headed for LaGrange. As I arrived at LaGrange, I could see the train departing the station, so I continued down Ogden Avenue, ducked under the tracks, found a place to park and scampered up the embankment. The train was on top of me the moment I got to the top, and I only had time to push the shutter button, resulting in this image.

Budd Co., (Job 9655-370) it was one of six Gallery Cab cars (#'s 790-795) delivered to the CB&Q to initiate push-pull service. This particular car seated 139 passengers and had toilet facilities. Note the Burlington Route logo on the door. There is no power car on this train. Two Budd cars could be electrically powered from taps on the 72 volt Auxiliary Generators on modified E-units. The air-conditioning was provided by propane-fueled Wakesha-driven units, and the heat came from steam generators on the locomotive.

CB&Q 801
Title:  CB&Q 801
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad public relations photograph of the interior of one of the two baggage bar lounge cars for the Twin Cities Zephyr, date and photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. The back of the print is stamped: Burlington Lines Donald Ashton Executive Assistant 547 W. Jackson Blvd. Chicago 6, Illinois. Also on the back of the print is hand-written: Twin Zephyr Bar Car. The CB&Q ordered two Baggage Bar Lounge cars from Budd in August 1945, Budd Job 9603-015. The cars were numbered and named; 800 named Silver Buffet, and 801 named Silver Salon. I believe this photo may have been by Hedrich Blessing, the company that shot many CB&Q public relations photos. Generally, the car would be positioned near the Zephyr Pit (14th Street Coach Yard) and CB&Q office personel would be recruited to be the happy passengers seen here. However, it it dark outside, so this may have been shot within the confines of Union Station. The photos would be distributed to interested parties, generally travel agents, although individuals could request a photo by mail, as I sometimes did as a novice railfan. Also of interest may be the series of three stars at the point where the walls meet the ceiling. I don't know if they had significance, or were just a designer's whimsy.

Title:  CB&Q 801
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Combine 801 at Indianapolis, Indiana on February 4, 1987, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This car was one of two combination club lounge baggage cars ordered in August 1945 (Budd Job 9603-015), delivered in December 1947 for the third version of the Twin Cities Zephyr. As built, it had a 19 foot baggage section, a 14 foot buffet/bar section, and a 37 foot club lounge section with four tables. It also had full length skirting, removed by the time of this photo. It became BN 801, conveyed to Amtrak, becoming Amtrak 1721 and later Amtrak 1601 in 1975 when Amtrak removed the buffet and lounge configuration and installed 40 coach seats, expanding the baggage section to 33 feet

CB&Q BA19 994
Title:  CB&Q BA19 994
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad class BA19 994, somewhere in Colorado, around 1969 or so, scan from a CB&Q in-house publication, the Burlington Bulletin. The BA19 baggage cars were built between 1950-1953 in the CB&Q's Havelock Nebraska shops, and were known to CB&Q employees as Havelock Baggage cars. They were built with and without Messenger facilities (toilet), as indicated by a star below the Railway Express Agency stencil between the doors. The BA19's were in the 900 series (with facilities) and the BA19A's were in the 1000 series (without facilities). Number's 990-1009 were painted Aluminum (silver) while 1015-1054 were painted standard heavyweight green. I had to guess about the date (before March 1970, when the California Zephyr was discontinued) and location, but it is clearly on the D&RGW, so it's somewhere west of Denver.

CB&Q 2726
Title:  CB&Q 2726
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2726 at Eola, Illinois on October 11, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 2726 was built in July 1928 by Pullman as CB&Q class PMC ( Passenger Motor Car ) number 847, powered by EMC with a Winton 275 horsepower gasoline engine ( c/n 283 ). It was renumbered in April 1930 to 9847. During December 1942 it was de-motored and converted to a passenger-mail-baggage car, renumbered to 2726 and assigned to branch line service. It is seen here at the Q's Reclamation Plant, soon to be scrapped.

This photo was originally marked as 2725, and information about 2725 was obtained from Bernard Corbin's book, "Burlington In Transition", however, Rupert Gamlen called my attention to the error as follows:

There is a photo of an ex-motor car labelled 2725, but I think this is 2726. Number 2725 was ex-574, 839 and 9839 built by Saint Louis, while 2726 was ex-847 and 9847 built by Pullman. One of the distinguishing features are the roof vents. The Saint Louis cars have them on the centreline while the Pullmans have box-like ones each side of the centreline. Also, according to Bill Glick's Passenger Car Roster book, 2725 was scrapped in 1958, six years before the photo.

CB&Q Class CF-7 3003
Title:  CB&Q Class CF-7 3003
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad combine Class CF-7 3003 at Oregon, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. Number 3003 was built in June 1911 by AC&F as CB&Q 2076, renumbered to 1095 ( classed BA-17 ) in September 1923, then renumbered again in July 1928 to 3003 ( classed CF-7 ), scrapped at Eola on January 13, 1966. This car served as the waycar and passenger accommodations on the Oregon Way Freight, the last mixed train out of Eola in the early 1960's. The purpose was to accommodate passengers between Aurora and Oregon at the stations skipped by the Zephyrs. I found out about this train from the crew of the East End Way Freight, which switched Naperville, where I lived. I would take a Dinky ( commuter train ) from Naperville to Aurora, where I would purchase a round trip ticket to Oregon. I had to inform the ticket agent of my intention to ride to way freight, and he would instruct the tower to display a lunar light for the way freight, indicating there was a passenger for their train. I rode this train several times in 1963-64, and almost always caused some sort of ( unintentional ) commotion.

One such event happened one day while the crew was off switching Rochelle. I was left in 3003 by myself, and being a curious 15 year old, I proceeded to inspect every nook and cranny in the car. After a while I got bored and started cleaning the car, hoping to endear myself to the rear end crew, to whom I was an annoyance at best, with my asking all sorts of stupid railroad questions. I noticed the marker lights in the vestibule and decided to clean those as well. I polished and topped off the kerosene fuel, and lit them to view my work. Proud of myself, I placed the markers in the brackets on the rear of 3003. I got off to look at the results. About that time, Number 21, the Twin Cities Zephyr, the fastest train on the Burlington Route, approached from behind for a station stop in Rochelle. A blast of the horn, and 21 ground to a halt just behind 3003 which, although on a siding, was displaying lit markers. Number 21 was faithfully observing Rule 102(a), which states: "Engineman on an approaching train observing an emergency red light displayed must stop immediately and must not pass the red light until it has been ascertained that the track is safe and clear for movement of train." This was ( fortunately ) in the days of radio communication, and from what I gathered later, there was considerable radio conversation about the delay of Number 21. The way freight crew hurried back to the 3003, the Conductor removed the markers and waved 21 on. I was banished to the locomotive for the rest of the trip to Oregon. Obviously, I had failed in my attempt to win over the rear end crew.

CB&Q Class CF-7 3003
Title:  CB&Q Class CF-7 3003
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class CF-7 3003 at Aurora, Illinois on September 11, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 3003 was built in June 1911 by ACF as CB&Q 2076, renumbered 1095, renumbered again to 3003, scrapped at Eola on January 13, 1966. In its final years this car was assigned to the Oregon Way Freight, the last mixed train working out of Eola to Oregon and return. As I was cleaning the slide I noticed an air (or maybe electric) horn mounted near the top of the signal bridge by the ladder on the right.

CB&Q 3659
Title:  CB&Q 3659
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 3659, former gas electric 9843, at Canton, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1980, Kodachrome by Edward M. DeRouin, Chuck Zeiler collection. The slide is marked: Q CANTON D. B. TRAILER. An inquiry at the Yahoo.com CB&Q Group produced the following from Hol Wagner:

In the image Chuck posted the car wears faded mineral red paint, and while there are indications (on the roof at the front end) this this paint might have been applied after the car was placed in building service at Canton (if in fact that's where the photo was taken), there are more indications (especially on the roof ventilators above the coach section) that the mineral red dates to the Q era. Several of these converted PMCs were painted mineral red ( I have a slide of 3651 in red ) when their assignment called for their use primarily as a waycar. In later years, nearly all of them were used primarily as waycars, and none of them were repainted after their conversion into trailers at Havelock. Bear in mind that a good many combines used primarily as waycars were painted mineral red, including a number of the steel-sheathed 3530 series cars and many of the older wooden cars. And of course all the 3900 series CW class cars were mineral red. The fact that the car was still on trucks in 1980 indicates to me that it was one of the three cars that were still around when BN was formed in 1970, and BN used mineral red for company service equipment, so the car could have been painted this way in the BN era and faded to the extent shown in the photo by 1980. I just dug out the diagram sheets for these cars, and the window and door configuration perfectly matches the 3659, which was converted in 1952 from the 9843.

Adding to Hol's information is the following from R. W. 'Bud' Linroth confirming the location:

I have a personal knowledge about this car as I knocked it off the track sometime in the late 1970's. It was the crew locker room/office/supply car. It was located on a short storage stub track down near the International Harvester plant right next to the plant lead. We had just spotted the plant and were reaching in on the stub track to get one car to set it over on a short track on the side of the plant called South Maple. I took the two-unit consist over to the switch, lined it for the stub track and gave the engineer an easy back up sign (we had just passed the car coming out of the plant so the engineer knew it was just in the clear of the plant lead). To make a long story short, the engineer put the engines in reverse and leaned over to put his coffee cup in his grip and did not see me washing out as the engines were coming back too fast. I ran out wide flagging down just in time to see the engines hit the box car. The engines hit the coupler so hard the pin did not drop and the car took off and ran down the stub track about five cars lengths and hit the coach knocking the rear half off of the end of the track. Later the coach was moved about 1½ miles south to where we called two tracks cleaning tracks 1 and 2. These tracks are where the empty box cars for the International plant were stored. It was placed on a couple pieces of panel rail where nobody could hit it again. The power poles in the background of the picture verify this location. No one received any discipline for this incident and the coach/car was not damaged. The only real loss was the afternoon job's conductor had his coat hanging over the stove and the collision knocked it down on the stove where we found it well done. Bud Linroth ex-Canton Road switcher brakeman.
